SOLD Garden Biscuit © 2014 Karen Mathison Schmidt 6 x 6 inches • oil on archival, museum-quality GessobordTM private collection • Seminole, Florida Here’s my friend Ramona’s tortoise-shell tabby, Biscuit. The third of my paintings over the last few years to feature her. It’s always such a joy to paint Her Fluffiness. Well, Pantoufle has graduated to eating on his own; no more bottle feedings. Aaaww … and woo-hoo! (that’s both a sad face AND a happy face.) For all our English-speaking friends who have been questioning how to pronounce his name, it’s not difficult. It’s easiest to think of the “le” at the end as silent, so just say, “pon-TOOF.” If you want to be a stickler and pronounce it the French way, each syllable has the exact same emphasis, and there is a very subtle touching of the tongue to the roof of the mouth at the very end. For the last little while, Pantoufle and Jo have been playing hide-and-seek on my desk. Now Jo is waiting for Pantoufle to come around to her end of the computer. I think she’s going to be waiting for a bit longer.

Original hand painted Japanese sumi-e ink painting of a cat with the title “Happy cat” by professional Japanese artist Yoko Schmidt (that's me :) The picture is made from delicate brush strokes with black ink and a red seal of the artist’s name (Yoko). In a contemporary interpretation of an age old Japanese tradition, in Yoko's art you can sense the presence of real, living cats, expressed with a few, delicate movements of the brush. Painted on finest Awagami Washi natural paper from Japan. This special sumi-e paper is made using traditional methods and therefore naturally shows slight variations in texture and a minimal waviness due to the ink. The picture is sold mounted (i.e. frame is not included) with the standard mount size 25x20 cm as you can see on the photos -- so you can easily find a frame that fits into your room. (On request I can also offer a 8x10 inch mount instead, if you prefer). The acutal picture / paper size is ca. 14x12 cm. You are buying the original picture as shown in the photo directly from the artist. The underlying design is reused in other paintings of her. Beautiful as deco in any room in your home or office. Or why not give it as a present for your friend or loved one - it makes a wonderful and unique gift for any art or cat lovers. If you like I can also wrap it nicely, using a decorative dark red craft paper with a golden twine (just as shown in the last photo), offered at a fair price. About the artist: Yoko Schmidt is an accomplished artist specializing in sumi-e (Japanese ink paintings), as well as contemporary art. Born in Madagascar in 1971, she grew up in Japan and lived in several countries in Africa and Europe, and now lives in Munich. Yoko studied fine art in London + Barcelona, and exhibited widely. In case you are intested, Yoko has published a book “sumi-e cats”, which is also separately available in her Etsy store. Printed on premium paper, the book includes high-quality reproductions of 40 of her cat paintings, a number of photos, as well as introductory texts about the artist and the history of sumi-e.
