Below is the assessment we used, you will also see a beginning of the year assessment with the same theme that has different wording. We had a lot of fun with this theme and will be using it about for this coming school year. Ammonites were pre-historic sea creatures with tentacles and a spiral shell. Their fossils can be found all over the world in many different types of sedimentary rock including chalk, limestone, and sandstone. This hands-on activity is a fun alternative to a worksheet and is differentiated to use with different ages/abilities. There are 4 similar black and white templates to choose from for this printable activity: 1. Color the images, cut out and fold 2. Color the images, cut out the words and sequence them, glue the words in place, cut and fold. 3. As above but the pictures and words are sequenced together. 4. A larger version over 2 pages. When closed, you'll just see the large fossil ammonite but when opened, the fossilization process will be revealed! Instructions are provided (including a picture showing how to fold) as well as some questions and suggested answers for discussion. Please note that some of the instructions are written for a school setting but this activity is transferable to a home environment. A version with UK/AUS paper size (A4) and spelling is included alongside a US version (11x8.5 inches). This resource is a pdf and cannot be edited. Tips for printing: 1. Make sure you are printing in landscape 2. Save ink and just print the templates. Use a screen to display the instructions. Excited to use all the differentiated versions this upcoming year when I am back in the classroom!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Very fun item; just what I was looking for to make homeschool lessons more interesting. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐So cute - differentiated - we also used the version where kids have to sort the stages as a mini formative assessment. It's Super Organizing Saturday once again! I have come to love these mornings this Spring...not too hot outside, a little chilly....not missing much if I stay inside and organize something! This week...it's my assessment binder for basic concepts. That's right....we're talking about assessments on a weekend. I know, I know, I know....that's a heavy topic for such a fun day of the week. If you agree, you might need a large cup of coffee. I'll wait----you grab yours, and I'll grab mine! Ok, I'm ready! Here we go! When I organize my assessments, I of course do not use manilla folders, hanging file folders, etc. If you've read my posts before, you've probably heard of my File Cabinet Rebellion of 2011, in which I ditched any and all file cabinets or file cabinet "accessories". I loathe file cabinets----and I LOVE binders! So, you see where I'm going with this.....and you can infer that I organize my assessments in a binder! Here is the beloved binder that holds all of my assessments. I was lucky to have my district supply me with everything that I needed. This binder contains: My curriculum/State objectives.... Letter Identification assessments... Letter/sound identification score sheets Beginning sound assessment & score sheets And much more! However, there are always those basic assessments that are not supplied by the district or curriculum - but are so necessary to early childhood. It is usually up to the grade level teachers, or individual teacher to create their own assessment and find a way to record the information every marking period or during progress monitoring. For me, I certainly needed to update my assessments/record keeping. I've taken the time to create these assessments based on my classroom needs---and perhaps they can work for you as well! All you need is a large 3-ring binder, page protectors, and a color printer. If these assessments work for you, feel free go grab them HERE....at no cost to you!

Last week we did some fun things with learning the seasons. Most of our learning came from our small group books. I use Reading A-Z, so I can make the themes fit what I want usually. And it did PERFECTLY! After a few days of really learning about seasons, we did a craft idea on an apple tree. They kids should REALLY know the apple tree, right?! So that's what I like to do. I got the picture of the tree from {THIS} post. It's a JPEG download (the link is in the comments on her blogpost). After I printed it, I just used good old fashion white out to cover the season names. They colored the tree brown, then cute apart the tree. (She has them already divided up) They put the pieces back together on the paper and then I had them label the seasons, IN ORDER. Once they had them in order (they could start with whatever season they wanted), I called them back to the table to do their painting. And now they hang in our room - and I love them! Another activity they did was to write their book of seasons. I suggested they talked about the weather, the plants, what they see..... Some were a little more detailed in their writing than others... but hey, their illustrations show me they know it! Leaf Litter!! Our phrase we learned that week from our Scholastic News. I love it! We really talked about the trees being bare in the winter.... you know, in other states besides Florida. If you want this little book, you can click {HERE} to download it. Then, to end the week. they did a "My Favorite Season" writing, where they had to write to explain why...using what they like to do, what the weather was like, what the plants did and if the days were long and hot or short and cold. And we worked on having a closing statement. They drew what they would see if they looked out their window at home. What would be going on outside?? Then, depending on which season they picked, they glued it to that color background. You can grab this activity {HERE}. Living in FL, I really like stressing about the season since we don't really have seasons here. That is the one of the FEW downfalls of living in FL.
