After learning about The Nervous System, we got down... ...to the heart of the matter in our human body study by examining the Circulatory System. Using the AIMS From Head to Toe book as our guide, here are the activities we completed... *** I introduced the Circulatory System to the kiddos... ...by watching THIS, THIS, and THIS on You Tube. *** Besides the printables from AIMS From Head to Toe I found... ...THIS worksheet for the kiddos to color... ...as they learned about human heart anatomy. *** When we studied the how and why blood circulates throughout the body... ...I found THIS game for the kiddos to play. Honestly, it was a bit long for my kiddos to play, so we cut it short. But it DID teach them about blood circulation. *** One of the activities the kiddos completed from AIMS From Head to Toe entitled Heart Stings... ...had the kiddos make a simplified model of the circulatory system. Using different thicknesses and colors of yarn... ...the kiddos tied pieces together to model how arteries, capillaries, and veins connect to one another. We added our own spin on this activity... ...by adding a small heart shaped bead in between the arterial yarn and venial yarn. The kiddos held their yarn next to their bodies to demonstrate how the blood circulates throughout the body. The finished product also made a cute mini scarflette they could wear as a reminder! *** We studied human blood... ...by making a model using beads and jello. We followed the directions from Relentlessly Fun Deceptively Educational... ...to create our model There was also a printable the kiddos used to record their finding. *** One of the final activities we did examined what blood pressure is. "In a Heartbeat" uses... ...marshmallows and toothpicks to detect how many beats per minute a person's heart beats. Gotta be honest- this activity did not work too well for us. We did see the toothpick move a bit on our wrists, but not enough to get a good count in for a minute. The kiddos still got the idea, and this packet included a fun fact sheet about animal heart beats per minutes which we enjoyed reading about. *** All in all, I think we were able to get down to the heart of, well, the heart! *** Linking up with Science Sunday...

A Venn Diagram is a graphic organizer that compares/contrasts two or more things. When students compare and contrast, they observe the similarities and differences between things. The Venn Diagram shows how things are alike and how they are different. A Venn Diagram is made with two overlapping circles. Where the circles overlap, students write the characteristics that the two things have in common. To the right and left of the overlapping area is where students list the differing characteristics of the things. The students could compare/contrast characteristics of different classifications of animals. Here are 3 examples. The students could choose 2 animal classes that they would like to compare. More advanced students could compare 3 or more animal classes using a triple Venn Diagram or a table. The students could draw the Venn Diagrams in their English Language Arts or Science notebook or you could download one of the FREE Venn Diagram Worksheets from Learning Workroom's website. Click Here: www.LearningWorkroom.comGo to Free Worksheets If the students need help, they could use information previously written in their science notebooks, or they could do further research using dictionaries, books, or the internet. _________________________________________________________________
We have had so much fun this week learning about the Human Body: Bones, Joints and Muscles. Come on over and join in the fun too!
'4B' was the code our school secretary used to easily identify our class back when I taught 4th grade. 4 = 4th grade. B = Bongers. I later went on to teach Language Arts at a middle school, so this blog documents the learning we did in reading and writing each day, in addition to many posts from when I taught fourth grade. I figured keeping it all in one place was better than having two separate blogs. One more thing: please feel free to PIN anything you see!
