I was going through some old magazines in the attic at the weekend and I discovered a Justine Waddell article in the 27 October 2002 issue of The Mail on Sunday's You magazine. I don't see very much material on Justine online so I thought I would share it with you...
MIFF: June 26, 2011 A short piece on MIFF 2011 with a rough translation from Google: http://www.purepeople.ru/article/mmkf-2011-premera-filma-mishen_a4623/1 The film "Target", based on the scenario of the famous writer Vladimir Sorokin, participates in MIFF 2011. This picture is not in competition, but it was stated in section gala premiere. Screenwriter, actor and film director Alexander Zeldovich gave a press conference to talk with reporters about the daunting tape. Vladimir Sorokin has defined a genre of film as "an ironic utopia." He also explained that the script was co-written with Alexander Zeldovich, so that the picture can not be called adaptation. Was also attended by actress Nina Loshchinina and Justine Waddell, starred. Justin, British actress, learned to speak well in Russian just over a month and she was able to duplicate your character! "When I read the script, I had a feeling that I just read a good novel, I knew immediately it would be a very interesting project," said Justine Waddell. By the way, MIFF 2011 continues! In his program, there are other Russian films worthy audience's attention. Another article on MIFF 2011: http://www.polit.ru/article/2011/06/28/mishen/ Justine Waddell and Nina Loshinina leave a cinema hall after a press conference for 'Mishen (Target)' at the 33rd Moscow International Film Festival (MIFF) in Moscow, Russia on June 26, 2011. Justine recently was one of the jury members for Voices Film Festival in Vologda, Russia. (See "Public Appearances" for more details.) In an interview at the festival, Justine said: "Now all my time is spent on writing a screenplay on a novel by Virginia Woolf. Filming should begin in the fall, the film will be released next year. This is my first job as a writer." - - - - In learning Russian for her role in "Target" (or "Mishen"), Justine watched many classic Russian films. This sparked a passion for seeing Russian films restored and spread to a wider audience. In an interview for New Style Magazine in 2012, she said: "One of the really special things about doing this film was that I taught myself Russian by watching Soviet cinema. I felt like Alice in Alice in Wonderland. Like Alice, I fell down the rabbit hole into a hidden and enchanting world of film. Why is this film tradition hidden? Why has this film tradition never travelled? Is it the legacy of the Cold War? Is it the boundary of language? I don’t know. I am now an avid cinephile. I am setting up a little classic Soviet film DVD label to bring these films out of Russia to a British audience." In another interview with RT in 2011, she said: "One way I learnt Russian was by watching Russian films with subtitles . . . I started from the beginning, pre-Einstein, and watched my way forward. It really fascinates me that there are such great films from the 1920s and 1930s as well as from the 1960s and 1970s, that haven't been distributed in Europe." She is now a trustee of the Kino Klassika Foundation, which aims to restore and (re)present classics of Soviet cinema: http://www.kinoklassikafoundation.org/ She is listed as a member in the Russian Cinema Research Group with UCL School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ssees/research/research-centres/russian-cinema-research-group/group-members She has also been doing some work in the department of directing and screenwriting: http://www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com/professionals/persons/justine-waddell/ June 2014 Public Appearances and Photoshoots in the navigation bar have been updated.
