Since the age of 14 when I went on my first big trip without my parents (a week hiking in the Tauras Mountains of Turkey), I've kept a DIY travel journal or
Hi everyone and welcome! Thank you so much for the continued support and positive feedback for my Travelers Notebook style journals, created using Eileen Hull's 'Journal' die. Today's offering is a vintage sewing themed journal which incorporates more than just junk journal pages; I have been inspired by my good friend Anne Redfern, a fellow member of Eileen's Inspiration Team, who adds all sorts of practical pockets and accessories to her journals. I highly recommend you check out her recent tutorial for a professional yet easy to achieve pocket insert HERE. And so to my latest journal, which gave me the perfect opportunity to experiment with Dina Wakley's range of paints, stamps and stencils. Have to say I love the results that can be achieved and how easy they are to use! First up here's the video walk through of the journal from my YouTube channel; Now, as promised in the video, here's the tutorial for recreating the journal cover (click on each image for a close up); Having glued the journal covers together, cover them in Black Gesso (or cut from black mountboard) before using Dina's White Gesso to apply a contrasting and uneven layer over the top on both sides. Apply pieces of sewing pattern paper over the top with Matte Distress Collage Medium. Add a much thinner layer of the White Gesso over the paper to blend with the background. Add offcuts from Tim Holtz 'Memoranda' paper stash with the same Distress Collage Medium. Stamp the small blooms from Dina Wakley's 'Homage to Frida' and 'Abstract Blooms' stamp set with Hickory Smoke Distress Ink. You may need to heat set this layer as it's sitting on the Collage Medium. Add uneven swirls of Dina's 'Rosy' Acrylic Paint over the stamped flowers (the ink will be absorbed by it). Add a half moon swirl over one side of each flower with Dina's 'Elephant' Acrylic Paint. Mix four parts 'Elephant' Acrylic Paint to one part 'Evergreen' to get a softer colour. Paint over the leaves with the mixed colour, again absorbing the underlying ink. Add Dina's 'Umber' Acrylic Paint to some sponge, dab onto the small bloom stamps, and then stamp over the corresponding painted flowers (reapply the paint each time you stamp them). Use Dina's 'Jumbled Numbers' Stencil to add a random layer of White Acrylic Paint numbers over the whole design. To finish the front cover use the plaque that can also be cut from the Journal die, paint it with black and white gesso as before, stamp the words from the Homage to Frida set and cover in Glossy Accents. And finally thread your choice of elastic, thread, ribbon etc through the pre-cut holes (there's a tutorial for that on the die packaging) and you are ready to add inserts of your choice! Here are some close up photos of the additions inside this one as seen on the video; You can see on the tag where I used Eileen Hull's 'Word Stitchlits' dies to cut the word Sunshine. Using the same Dina Wakley small bloom stamps on the elements inside the journal helped tie it all together. Here is the envelope I made using layers of sewing pattern paper and Eileen Hull's 'House/Pocket' Stitchlits die. Here's another of the words and the heart from the 'Word Stitchlits' die set cut into the smaller tag. I quadruple embossed a scrap of card with Emerald Creek 'Charred Gold' Embossing Powder before pressing one of the images from Dina Wakley's 'Homage to Frida' stamp set into it with Jet Black Archival Ink. This close up shows the beautiful effect you get from the multiple colours/sizes of granules contained in the embossing powder. And finally on the back cover of the journal is the 'Embroidery Hoop', cut from Eileen Hull's die, painted with Dina Wakley's 'Elephant' Acrylic Paint, and holding a piece of fabric stamped and coloured with another of Dina's 'Abstract Blooms' and Acrylic Paints (following the steps used on the cover). I also mentioned in my video some free downloadable pages and inserts - here are the links to those; check out Astrid Maclean's gorgeous journals and fabulous free downloadables here - https://astridsartisticefforts.blogspot.co.uk/2017/05/passport-to-paris-and-some-journal.html and the hugely generous Wenda has a wonderful array of downloadable inserts for Travelers Notebooks and more - http://www.wendaful.com/free-printable-inserts/ YAY! You've made it to the end of this post! Hope you've enjoyed the journey and picked up some useful ideas along the way. I'll add a list of most of the products used in the making of this journal below. If you have any questions please do shout out - it seems to take longer to share projects than to create them these days so I may have forgotten something along the way! Whatever you're up to for the rest of the week hope it's a good one, take care of yourselves and get creative! Jenny xxx

Make Your Own Travel Journal This cute little travel journal is made from blank greeting cards and the World Traveler Scrap Pack from My Porch Prints on Etsy. Get the World Traveler Scrap Pack from My Porch Prints on Etsy To Begin To begin, you'll need to make a journal from blank cards. You can learn how to do that here. Cut Out Pieces Once your journal is complete, print out your World Traveler Scrap Pack and cut out the elements & envelopes. I cut each 8.5x11 map paper into 4 equal pieces and used those 1/4 page pieces as my backgrounds for each page of my journal. Darken Page Edges To give the journal pages depth, I highlighted the edges with marker. (You can also use Distressing Ink.) Begin by rubbing your marker onto a make-up sponge. Then, lightly run the sponge along the edges of both your blank card journal pages AND your cut-out map pages as shown. I also darkened the center fold of each page of my journal (photo 3). Map Paper Backgrounds Glue your map backgrounds to each page of your journal as desired. I used craft glue and a craft paint brush to smooth it out so my pages weren't wrinkled. Simply apply the glue to the back of your pages and smooth with the brush. You can also use a credit card to smooth the pages, working from the center out toward the edges and corners. Time To Decorate! Next, is the fun part. Add the elements from the Scrap Pack to decorate your pages! You can tuck cards & tags into the smaller envelopes. Also, apply tabs to select pages. Get creative. Use pieces of elements or papers to create bands or pockets for holding other elements. I also like to use mounting tape to add dimension. You can use your make-up sponge to darken the edges of any elements you like! For the larger envelopes, I like to seal them and cut the edge off, then glue them to a page. This creates a pocket. For the finishing touch, create a cover & add a cute charm. I used a mini key. Now you're ready for an adventure! Fill your pages with stories, photos and ephemera (like tickets, wrappers, etc.). Enjoy!

Namaste Guys Time for festivals and holidays and everyone will be heading for vacations and I want to inspire you all with a Travel themed Junk journal. Before I show you the finished Project lets talk about what is a Junk Journal or Junque Journal ?? A junk Junque Journal is a journal made from found items papers and scraps and pattern paper etc! It has many a functions you can use them to store your favorite poems or draw in them or add photos and write in them. I have come up with a unique style of Junque Journal to take on my travels and the save all my travel memories and memorabilia and instead of using scraps and leftover found papers I use good pattern paper. So, this journal I have designed for my upcoming trip and Ii have used the Far and Away Line from Teresa Collins. This paper collection is awesome to make a travel themed journal as It has some really great patterns and also a Die-cut sheet, and some sheets of Atc's and Journalling cards. A lot of the thinking and the work has been done for you. Without further ado here is how I design and make my Junque journals, I divide the Signatures Day wise and add tons of pages, pockets, flaps and envelopes. So in terms of texture and page sizes there is a lot of variety and scope for adding elements like brochures and also for writing. You must be wondering as the pages are black how I do my writing I use a simple white gel pen to do so. Just look at all the pages and the real estate so many places to write and add photos and brochures! So, you can get everything about your holiday and preserve your memories for ever. As you can see This book is huge and I have made it 12 x 6 to get two full 4x6 photos on the pages !! and there the pages gradient from large to small to create movement fro the eyes that I think is attractive and adds to the charm. I've mentioned before that I've been keeping travel journals on every big backpacking trip since the age of 14 and travel journal prompts really help in
We have a new schedule for posts this year at A Vintage Journey - and the 2nd Friday after a challenge post - we have a tutorial post! Today I'm sharing a travel journal I made using a brand new Wrapped Journal Die from Eileen Hull/Sizzix. I also used Eileen's new Journaling Words dies for 'wander' on the cover and 'travel' and 'journal' on the first page I tied an Idea-ology Word key (Journey) onto the jute binding. I used Idea-ology Linen Ribbon for the journal closing allowing extra ribbon to accommodate the fattening as things were added to the journal pages! I used ScorTape to adhere the ribbon to the back of the journal so it wouldn't get lost when untied. Here's how the wrapped journal looks when opened up Here's how I made it! I cut the journal out of matboard and sponged the binding sides and all edges with Ranger Distress Salty Ocean. I used blue ink to coordinate with the map pieces (from a National Geographic Magazine) that I cut to fit the cover pieces. I sponged the edges of the map pieces with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink. Then I adhered the panels to the cover. I made 4 signatures of 4 pages each - each page is 7" x 5" and folded in half (giving a whopping 64 pages to the journal!) cut from Wendy Vecchi Newsprint paper and Paper Stash/Correspondence by Tim Holtz. I lined up the folds in the pages with the holes in the cover, marked where the holes were and punched through the pages. I used Idea-ology black jute string (4 pieces of 17" each) to bind each signature to the cover, tying the knots on the outside of the journal. Here are photos of some of the pages I made. Pockets for pressed flowers or photos Here is the center of the first signature where you can see the jute binding it to the cover. More pockets cards for notes I used tags cut from Eileen's new Credit Card Sleeve and Tags die on some of the pages where I had envelopes or pockets so they could be found easily. I looped a piece of twine through the holes on the tags. Two of the tags are on the top of the pages, two are on the sides. Glassine envelope for small treasures Even with bits sticking out past the pages, you can still cleanly close the journal and nothing falls out! The wrapped cover design gives lots of room for expansion as things are added to the pages. I brushed Gel Medium over the map pieces to give the cover some protection from all the handling it would get while traveling! Now I just need to go somewhere!! I hope you have enjoyed seeing my Travel Journal - I would also like to remind you to check out our April Challenge - Rusty and Crusty You have until May 3rd to link up your project!
