I have been dying to link up with my sweet friend Kacey over at Doodle Bugs for her Five for Friday post. Well, I have come to this realization...that is never gonna happen! :) By the time Friday night hits...this teacher is so doneeee! So...pretend today is Friday! Here is how my week went down! 1: SLEEP You know you are exhausted when you fall alseep in your school clothes and don't wake up until 6:30 a.m. True story. On Monday night, I told myself that I would lay down for just a second, and before I knew it, it was 6:30 the next morning. I was still asleep...fully clothed...jewelry and all! My husband even tried to wake me up and then he gave up! {Not sure if I believe that story!} :) ...seriously though, I need summer to get here ASAP so I can be awesome every single day! Ha! 2: Summer Writing Fun After a week of state testing, we are back to a normal routine. This week, we spent a lot of time writing our way through my End of Year Writing Bundle. The kids loved thinking about and planning their futures. After that, we also planned our summer with our Dive into Summer Writing. Love how these turned out, but I love these sweet babies even more! Going to miss them so, SO much! {But we won't talk about that right now!} 3: Do the Harlem Shake A few days ago, I posted about my end of the year behavior management system. If you missed that, we are using balloons! :) So...what was day three you ask? Make a Harlem Shake Video. The kids brought props and were counting down the seconds until go time! Here is our Harlem Shake... 4: Science Experiment Fun I love living so close to a local university. They are always so wonderful about bringing experiences directly into the classroom. On Friday, our kids were instructed by the 5th and 6th graders {they were trained earlier in the week}. During this time, they completed 12 hands-on science experiments! Such a great way to give ownership to our older kids and build school community throughout our grade levels. Also a great way to keep our kiddos engaged during these last few weeks! 5: End of year mayhem! Oh my...I can feel it inching closer. Today, I will be working on my classroom awards and finishing up my end of year gifts. Here is a little peek... I will be posting more about this tomorrow! Be sure and link up with Doodle Bugs to show us your week! Have a great weekend!
Wednesday was our last day of school. This has been such a challenging school year that really tested my nerves and skills as a teacher. I...
Let's Have a Lemonade Tasting (A Fun End of Year Experience) 8 comments End of Year, Freebies, Lemonade Day, Lemonade Tasting Today we had a Lemonade Tasting, and it was so much fun! I typically do several themed days at the end of the year. We've run out of curriculum, the kids are in summer mode, and it's an easy way to keep them engaged with meaningful learning up until the end. So, what goes into a lemonade tasting? Let's find out! As the students walked in to the room today, they were greeted with these pink and yellow ribbon streamers. To attach them to the door frame, I simply taped them with Scotch tape. Nothing fancy, I promise. Then, I taped a few lemon slice cut outs to the ends of a few pieces of the ribbon. You can grab the lemon cut outs HERE. We started the day by making new words from the words "cold lemonade." Some really great words they came up with include "noodle," "candle," and "melon." This got them ready for the next thing: the lemonade tasting! We headed outside to our courtyard where I served the students small portions of pink and yellow lemonade. Small, as in, those are bathroom sized cups. ;) To add a bit of novelty to this experience, I made drink tickets for the students to cash in when they grabbed their lemonade. This actually helped make sure the process remained orderly. As a student approached the table, he/she dropped his/her ticket in the provided bucket and then grabbed the matching drink. They loved their little tickets! After the tasting, we came inside and conducted a whole group poll to find out which flavor of lemonade was most popular. The students graphed the results and then answered some questions about their graph. I gave each student a wristband (card stock cut into strips and labeled "Team Pink" and "Team Yellow") to represent their favorite drink. This helped them to be consistent during the poll. Second graders sometimes forget their choice when participating in activities like this. Hehe. Plus, they thought it was pretty cool to sport their paper bracelet for the day. You can grab the drink tickets and bracelet templates HERE. After graphing our favorite picks, the students brainstormed words to describe their favorite lemonade and then wrote opinion pieces about which lemonade they liked best. The opinion pieces were written in these super fun shape books. After all that sitting and writing, it was time to get up and move a bit! We played a game of I Spy. We used these lemonade themed money word problem task cards to review our problem solving (and money counting) skills. Finally, we practiced our parts of speech skills by completing this lemonade themed word sort. Some of the words really got them thinking and it was fun to hear them talk it out with their teaching buddies. The question of the day was whether they should put "drink" in the noun or verb category. It was so great to hear them think it out. Ultimately, they decided it went with the verbs so that each category would have an equal number of words. So logical! (But, for the record, I would have accepted its placement in either category). Our Lemonade Tasting was lots of fun! The kids absolutely loved it! Best of all, they were engaged in all of the activities and didn't even realize that they were still learning! All of these activities, plus more can be found in my Let's Have a Lemonade Tasting! pack on TPT. What are your favorite end of year themes? DON'T FORGET IT, PIN IT! Share It:

I can't believe this school year is almost over! I have only 5 days of school left, Friday is our last day. I will miss my kiddos dearly but am super excited to start my summer vacation. Next school year will bring so many changes for me~~new partner teacher (SUPER excited!!), best friend coming back to teach at my school (YAHOO!!), my baby girl is starting 8th grade at another school (BOO HOO!), and 3rd grade will switch classes next year (SCARED!!)!! I will need the summer to get ready for my 27+ new students next year. I love planning over the summer and will need this summer to prepare for switching classes. Switching won't be so bad, I will teach religion to 2 classes. I am really happy about not teaching science and social studies too!! I always have a hard time fitting these 2 subjects in on a daily basis. My students have been really busy these last 2 weeks doing my favorite all-time writing assignment~~~My Favorite Summer Vacation! I just love this writing and really LOVE how the finished essays turn out. Check them out below. You can click (HERE) to download the sunglasses template. You need to make 2 copies and tape them together. See below!! This year I decided to give out Candy Awards. I literally ran all over town looking for each type of candy. I even had my honey helping me (He was so cute going from store to store!)! I had the hardest time finding Lifesavers (Who would believe that?!). You can download your own set of Candy Awards from Tunstall's Teaching Tidbits. I found these awards during the summer and have been saving them all year. Check them out below! I can't wait to share them with my students tomorrow!!! Here is just a taste of what the awards look like! They are precious!!!! Here is a fun project I did with my class last week. I found this idea on Pinterest and just HAD to try it with my class! Look at the pictures below and try to see the shape! I am in LOVE with this!!

I needed an idea for after program singing time, but I wanted to give the kids a break from the same old songs/learning a new song. I saw the mustache on a plate idea somewhere(the song was hidden under the mustache) but I wanted to change things up a bit. Cue TRIVIA GAME!! I titled the game "I Mustache You A Question". I put together a bunch of questions about primary songs (I have the document of questions I used. I'll add them at the end). A few children at a time came forward (I did 3 for lack of time) and answered their question. If they got the answer correct they pulled a mustache off any plate and got to wear it while they helped lead the next song. It was a hit! It brought lots of laughter and smiles to the room, but they were quick to be reverent again because they all wanted a turn. (For making the Mustache Men) I cut lots of different looking mustaches out of felt. Laminated a piece of card stock(helped a ton for durability) and hot glued the mustaches to it. Cut the mustaches out and taped them on the plates that I had drawn silly faces on. (I stuck a few pieces of tape on the area of the plate I would be removing the mustache from over and over again so it wouldn't rip my plates.) After junior primary was over and put a new piece of tape on each mustache and stuck them back on the plates for sr. primary. The kids had a wonderful time playing and I was happily surprised how well they answered some of the questions. Hopefully this can help someone out. Let me know if you have any questions. Memory wheels are a great end of school year activity for upper elementary and middle school students. Learn about memory wheel templates.
I was thinking earlier this week, what time of the school year is busier?...the beginning of the year or the end of the year. I honestly don't know, but one thing I do know is that I enjoy the end of the year business a little more because it means summer break is right around the corner. There are so many extra details to consider at the end of the year. Grade cards, records (records and more records), special days, award ceremonies, class gifts, closing down your classroom, and more. It's really important to get an early start on all of these loose ends or you will find yourself staying up for some late nights trying get everything finished. One way you can help get yourself organized is by setting up some end of the year totes during the last couple of weeks. The totes I set up were complete, donate, put away, toss. In each tote I placed items or notes for myself to deal with as soon as possible. My goal was to take care of everything in the totes before going home that day (although some items stayed in the totes for a few days). But even if the tote wasn't cleaned out before I left for the day, having everything I needed to do together in one spot really helped me stay focused on getting my end of the year tasks complete. By the way, if there was something in the tote I needed to complete outside of school, like getting gifts for the students, I took a picture with my phone to reference when I was out running errands. This system really helped me get things accomplished before the last day of school. And while I was not able to walk out the door after our end of the year teacher luncheon, I had all my "have to's" finished and had a chance to work on some bigger organization projects. One item in my complete tote was a summer review packet for our rising first graders. I sent our new firsties (and a few of our rising second graders) a supply list and a review packet. If you would like a FREE copy of this summer review packet with your students, click on the picture below. Another to do before wrapping up for summer break was to get my students a fun little end of the year gift. In the past I've given books, candy, sidewalk chalk, and framed pictures of the class. Student gifts this year were bubble wands. I really love sending my sweet students out the door with a small treat. If you are thinking of sending bubbles with your students and need a label for them, click on the picture below. I've linked an editable (and FREE) version of the labels I used. Our sweet girl is totally ready for summer break too. She will be in second grade. Am I a bit choked up?...yes. It is just crazy how quickly she is growing up. D and I love seeing the person she is becoming, but that doesn't stop me from wanting slow down time. The last days of the school year are super busy. But, with a little organization, you can end the year with plenty of energy to enjoy the summer.
End of the year art projects that we will complete during the last few weeks of school. How do you keep your students busy?
We Had a Bubble Fun Day!! 4 comments Bubble Day, End of Year, End of Year Theme, Freebies Today we had a Bubble Day! Curious as to what that means or what that looks like? Then, keep on reading. I love planning different themed days as our school year comes to a close. It's a great way to let the kids have fun while still maintaining a structured learning environment. Bonus: the kids have fun with the theme and forget they are learning! I like to keep my theme days a secret from the students. They always know that I have something fun planned, but they never know exactly what that is until they get to school the day of. So, to introduce Bubble Day to the students, I placed these fun notes and bubble wands on their desks. These wands are from our FOSS kits and were perfect to use with the mega jug (100 oz.) of bubbles I bought from Walmart. I'm jumping ahead a smidge, but I simply poured a bit of bubble solution into small cups for the students when it was time to blow bubbles. In years past, I have also given students their own container of bubbles. Having done it both ways, I can tell you that the kids love it either way. I also made a note for those years when I give the students their own container. You can grab both of these notes HERE. To get the students thinking about bubbles, I had them begin the day by completing this organizer. So, like I said, I poured some bubble solution into some small cups for the students (plastic bathroom sized cups). I filled them about half full. Then, the students used their bubble solution to blow some bubbles! Well, OK, there was more to it than that. As always, I had an ulterior, educational, motive in mind. As they blew their bubbles, the students completed a bubble observation. I told them that they were going to be bubble scientists and their job was to record their observations of the bubbles they blew. After the bubble observation, the students went back and added more information to their organizer from earlier in the day. Then, we learned about the science of bubbles. I read the book Pop! and then the students made this mini book demonstrating their understanding of key details in the text that I read aloud. Then, we played Scoot. I placed cards with bubble related words printed on them at the students' desks and they identified the word printed on each as a noun, verb, or adjective. Some of the words included in the game were bottle, delicate, float, wand, and blow. My apologies, but in the craziness that was this day, I didn't take a pic of the Scoot game exclusively, but you can see it in this image below. We also reviewed our expanded form skills with a quick game of I Have, Who Has (shown above). Again, my apologies for not having photos of these in isolation. Not only was it Bubble Day, but it was also our grade level yearbook signing and we had a water safety assembly. Typically, I like to have my students write directions explaining how to blow a bubble when I host a Bubble Day, but because of the other events that took place on this day, I opted for a poem. The students wrote a cinquain about bubbles. I love cinquains because the students are challenged to think of certain types of words that relate to their topic. Also, because they are limited as to how many adjectives, verbs, etc. they can use in this type of poem, they usually put a bit more thought into choosing their words. Bubble Day was a hit! And, even though we had a few other school events going on, we had a super fun day, filled with lots of laughs and learning. All of these activities/resources, plus many more, can be found in my Let's Have a Bubble Day! unit on TPT. DON'T FORGET IT, PIN IT! Share It:
Our Kindergarten teachers approached me with a request for an art project for the back cover of their memory books. The kids have filled out pages in their memory books all year and they wanted a colorful back cover. I found a fun and easy way to make fingerprint art on the Frogs Snails and Puppy Dog Tails blog. Then, we used a great end of year poem by Helen H. Moore. We started by dripping water in pans of … Read more... →

During the last week of school, I think it's important for students to reflect on what they've learned and how they've grown during the school year. I created this School Year Reflections printable as a convenient and fun way to have students think about the school year. It asks them to reflect on what they learned, tell what they thought was the best part of the year, describe an accomplishment that makes them proud, and so on.
Hi friends! It feels like forever since my last weekly round-up post! Here is what we have been up to in our classroom! Scroll to the bottom for the freebie! 1. NUMBER SENSE LOOSE PARTS TRAY I switched up my math loose parts tray and the kids ate it up this week! They are obsessed with gems, so I think the rhinestones helped. In the tray I put magnetic numbers, dominos, rhinestones and blocks with the words and, make (for composing numbers), numbers with dots (for extra support) and +, - and = signs to encourage addition and subtraction. 2. ROLL & COMPOSE We have been working on composing numbers in math so I modelled whole group, then set out this "Roll & Compose" as a math centre. Students are instructed to roll both dice, place the dice in a box and make the composing number sentence with magnetic letters. You can find this "Roll & Compose" centre in my "Composing Numbers for Kindergarten" pack on TPT. Click here or on the image below if you are interested in taking a look! If you want more ideas for composing numbers you can read my full composing numbers blog post here. 3. BEE INQUIRY A few of my kids had questions about bees, so we did a K-W-L chart with the whole class to see what else they were wondering about bees. We got so many great questions! We started by reading the book "Give Bees a Chance" by Bethany Barton (which we loved! It is a funny book with lots of interesting facts, great for Kindergarten!) and we wrote down what we learned about bees. I was so impressed with some of their pictures too, I have some amazing little artists! "I learned that bees have 5 eyes." "I learned that bees have 2 stomachs." If you are interested in the recording sheet I use for inquiry writing, you can find it in my "Inquiry Writing Templates for Kindergarten" pack by clicking here or on the image below: 4. ST. PATRICK PRINTING Can you believe it's March already next week!? Since St. Patrick's Day is during March Break, we usually have some of the centres out a bit early. Here are the tracing sheets I added to the dry erase centre after school today for next week. My "St. Patrick's Day Activities" pack got a big update earlier this week so be sure to re-download it if you own it! If you want to check it out, you can click here or on the image below: 5. MYSTERY CVC WORDS Here's another new centre I had out for the kids to try this week! I wanted something that would work on the skills my kids needed most; identifying beginning sounds, blending sounds and reading CVC words! This centre combines all 3 skills. It was a little challenging for some of my JK's but the SK's were great helpers and many kids worked in pairs to solve the mats together. I had lots of requests to share these mats, so it's now available in my TPT store. You can click here or on the image below to check it out if you are interested! 6. 2D SHAPE PUSH PIN SHEETS {FREEBIE} I posted this photo to my Instagram stories and got a request to post the file, so here it is! Print, slice in half and staple these sheets to construction paper and set them out with push pins. Students poke each dot and peel the copy paper off at the end to uncover their picture! It's great for perseverance, concentration and fine motor development! My kids love it! You can grab these for free by clicking here or on the image below: Ok that's it from me for this week! Have a great weekend! - Yukari
