Public domain photograph - David Octavius Hill, salted paper print, 19th-century Scotland, artistic early photography, free to use, no copyright restrictions image David Octavius Hill was a Scottish painter and photographer. He was a pioneer of photography in Scotland and is best known for his collaboration with Robert Adamson in which they produced some of the most important early photographs of Scotland. In 1843, Hill was commissioned to paint a group portrait of the leaders of the Free Church of Scotland, which became known as the "Disruption Assembly" painting. He then decided to photograph the same people in order to have a more accurate representation of the individuals. This commission led him to take up photography and he teamed up with Robert Adamson, who was a master of the new collodion process. Together, they produced a large body of work that depicted the people and landscapes of Scotland during the mid-19th century. Their photographs are considered some of the most important early photographs of Scotland, and are widely recognized for their technical excellence and artistry. Julia Margaret Cameron (11 June 1815 – 26 January 1879) began her photography career later in life, at the age of 48, and is known for her portraits of prominent figures of the time. Cameron's photographs have a soft-focus and romantic style, and she often used unconventional poses and compositions. She was also one of the first photographers to use close-up compositions and to photograph women as serious subjects. Cameron was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists and intellectuals and was influenced by the work of the Italian Renaissance.. Dated: 1860 - 1870. This exhibition poster is for a show of the work of the pioneering British 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. The photograph seen here is her 1872 portrait of Alice Liddell, who in her early years was an acquaintance of Lewis Carroll and, it is believed, was the inspiration for 'Alice's Adventures In Wonderland'. Alice Liddell (Alice In Wonderland) Portrait by Julia Margaret Cameron, Exhibition Poster, Victorian Photography Print, Lewis Carroll PLEASE NOTE: As with many of Julia Margaret Cameron's intense and ethereal portraits, the image is partly de-focused and grainy due to the nature of the early photographic equipment and processes used to produce it (for example, her dark room was in fact a converted coal house). We have left these features as-is rather than attempt to 'fix' them, as we believe this is the most respectful way to display the image, and one which retains the innate power in Cameron's work. Please therefore bear this in mind when purchasing the poster: essentially *yes* the photo is slightly out of focus, *yes* it's meant to be that way, and *yes* it is a wonderful image. With their artful shots of friends and family, early female photographers were acclaimed for their work – then disregarded. A new exhibition celebrates their groundbreaking work and acumen, often as sharp as their camera focus
