Dan Newton's Café Accordion Orchestra is pleased to announce the release of their new album Berets and Bongos. This is the eighth album by the Twin Cities based quintet and is also their most adventurous effort. As the title suggests, there is plenty of that familiar French flair to be found in the form of the musette waltzes lInterdite and Songe d' Automne, and also some Latin heat in two Cumbias and the chorro masterpiece Santa Morena. But that's only the beginning of things on Berets and Bongos. The fourteen tracks include compositions from nine different countries and vocals in six languages. Highlights include three stunning vocal performances by long time CAO associate Diane Jarvi. She sings in Spanish (Que Nadie Sepa Mi Sufrir), Russian (the classic folk song Dark Eyes), and Finnish (a sultry Tango Sa Kuluut). The album also includes Siroon Achkig, an Armenian tune sung by the band's newest member Robert Bell. Robert, an ace swing guitarist, also plays the oud and the banjo. Bassist Erik Lillestol makes his vocal debut joining mandolinist Eric Mohring in a Spanish duet on the campy cha-cha El Bodeguero. Bandleader / accordionist Dan Newton lends his voice to a swingy version of Who's cryin' Sweet Papa and also Yo No Bailo con Juana, a bumpy cumbia with lyrics by Brave Combo's Carl Finch. Dan and the band crank up the kitsch knob on Chose Sauvage, a French waltz version of Wild Thing. Joe Steinger has been CAO's percussionist since their beginning in 1993. On Berets and Bongos, Joe holds everything together with cool understated brush work and of course great bongo playing!
Let’s celebrate! Most language teachers are women, so let’s celebrate all women and highlight eight great ones. This package includes 8 women: Two writers Sor Juana, the most celebrated poet of the Americas. She chose the convent instead of marriage, she studied and corresponded with learned men in other countries. And she cooked. Fanny Calderón de la Barca, a 19th century traveler who wrote about the Mexican world she saw. She was criticized for describing Mexican women of all social classes but her insightful commentary rings true even today. An outsider often sees a society very clearly. One singer Violeta Parra, her protest songs inspired several generations not only in her native Chile but throughout the Spanish speaking world. Two teenage victims Rubí Ibarra – Her 15th birthday invitation became a social media event and 15 thousand people attended. The event transformed her life and the life of her family. Carmen Quintana – A 17-year-old who fell victim to the cruelty of the Chilean Pinochet regime and had gasoline poured over her body and lit. Here is a teenager whose face was totally transformed and had to deal with her new reality. What an amazing way of dealing with female beauty and it´s consequences. Two politicians The powerful Eva Perón, wife of the president, defender of the poor and iconic figure. Clara Campoamor, suffragist, who fought and won the battle for Spanish women´s right to vote. Yet history overtook her accomplishments and after the bloody Spanish Civil War she lived her life in exile. One icon La China Poblana is the symbolic female figure that represents Mexican womanhood but as you will learn in the text, she was born in India, sold as a slave in the Philippines and lived in bondage in Puebla. So how did she come to embody Mexican womanhood? Find out. ALL UNITS INCLUDE READING, COMPREHENSION, ORAL AND WRITTEN EXERCISES, WEB KEY WORDS, THE ANSWER KEY AND MOST INCLUDE BOTH A TEACHER´S GUIDE AND MODEL TESTS. INTEGRATED, INTERDISCIPLINARY UNITS THAT PROMOTE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE SPANISH SPEAKING WORLD and DESTROY STEREOTYPES. For teachers who would like to work on SPAIN, here is a link to the most important Spanish women in every Spanish province throughout history. The map and the names of the women would make an excellent research assignment for the entire class.
