Mornin' hens! Today is my good friend LouLou's birthday! She has an adorable four legged friend named Ginger so when I saw this stamp in the dollar bin at Michaels, I knew I had to have it for her birthday card. This was a super simple card to put together and I thought it turned out adorable! I stamped the image onto some Neenah Classic Crest CS and colored it with Copics. Then I cut the image out and adhered it to the card base using a few foam dimensionals. I added some grounding using my Prismacolor pencils. Then I used a curved edge die and cut the bottom edge of the balloon from some polka dot DP. I adhered this piece with foam dimensionals as well, then I trimmed the top edge of the balloon to match the top edge of the card. I free hand cut a triangle and attached it to the bottom of the balloon and attached some string to it and to the pup's paw too! To finish, I stamped the sentiment and added some faux stitching. That's it for me today! I hope you have a GREAT day! {{{hen hugs}}} Supplies: Fiskars 12 Inch SureCut Deluxe Craft Paper Trimmer (152490-1004) We R Memory Keepers Crop-A-Dile Corner Chomper Tool Martha Stewart Crafts Mini Scoring Board Uni-Ball Signo Broad Point Gel Impact Pen White 1-Pen Martha Stewart Medium Footed Stamp Mount Die: Custom Panels Elle-ments Copic Marker 72-Piece Sketch Set A Simple Stories Say Cheese 6x6 Paper Pad ENVIRONMENT Desert Storm Card Stock - 8 1/2 x 11 in 100 lb Cover Smooth 100% Recycled 250 per Packag Tsukineko Full-Size Memento Fade Resistant Inkpad, Tuxedo Black InLinkz.com

A train themed birthday party for a three year old boy in Washington, DC.
Joyce Lankester Brisley, children's writer and illustrator, was born on 6th Feb 1896 in Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex. She was the second of three sisters; Nina was a year younger and Ethel the eldest. Joyce's father, George Brisley, was a local pharmacist whilst his wife, Constance, looked after the family. All three sisters attended evening classes at Hastings School of Art. By the time the girls were in their teens, Ethel was exhibiting at the Royal Academy and Joyce and Nina were contributing illustrations to Home chat. After the break-up of the Brisley's marriage in June 1912, Constance Brisley and her three daughters moved to a small flat in Brixton, London. Joyce and Nina enrolled at Lambeth School of Art in Oct, seeking to overcome the loss of their father's income by earning a living from writing stories and illustrating Christmas cards, postcards and children's annuals. The family were dedicated Christian Scientists and in 1918, when the family moved to Barons Court, a contact at their local Christian Science church encouraged both Joyce and Nina to submit stories and drawings to an American magazine, The Christian Science monitor. Joyce's first story of Milly-Molly-Mandy appeared in The Christian Science monitor in Oct 1925. Stories of the little girl proved popular and the first collection of them, Milly-Molly-Mandy stories, was published in the UK by George G. Harrap in 1928. Nina Kennard Brisley married in 1933 and became the illustrator of Elinor Brent-Dyer's much-loved Chalet School series. Ethel Brisley died in 1961 and Joyce in Sept 1978, just a few months after Nina. We celebrated my daughter's 2nd birthday this year with a fun Daniel Tiger theme. She is obsessed with Daniel Tiger--it is the only show she wants to watch. I, of course, loved the idea of doing a Daniel Tiger theme--I have a soft spot in my heart for him from all my years as a little kid watching Mr. Roger's Neighborhood with Trolley and such. I love the new spin off of that show in the form of sweet and cuddly Daniel Tiger. The first element that I knew was a must on the cake was Trolley itself. I printed off a picture of Trolley from the internet, and cut it apart into the different elements of the trolley. Then I rolled modeling chocolate out, in varying thicknesses, put the paper template on top of the correct piece of modeling chocolate, and cut each piece out with an exacto knife. Then as I assembled it on the side of my bottom tier, it seemed to come to life with the varying thicknesses of the trolley, almost looking 3 dimentional. Next I wanted to put Daniel Tiger's house on top. I cut slats into the fondant to make wood planks, then distressed them a little with a little roller tool, and finally painted on the white fondant with brown food coloring mixed with lemon extract. I followed the tutorial here for doing the wood look. My husband had bought me a clay extruder gun for Christmas, that I was so excited that I finally got to use when I made this cake. I used the gun to make the sticks for the roof of Daniel's house. It was time consuming, but turned out just how I envisioned! For the final touches on the cake I made a Happy birthday banner out of modeling chocolate, and put Daniel, Katerina Kittycat, and Miss Elaina on top by Daniel's house. We also served some other Tiger-inspired snacks--Tiger cupcakes Tiger tails (pretzels dipped in orange candy melts and drizzled with milk chocolate.) And these adorable Tiger mandarin orange cups were so fun for my 6 and 4 year olds to make, so that they felt like they were contributing to the party prep. It turned out cute, and she was so excited about her cake. That was 4 months ago, and she still talks about her cake everyday and loved it. Here are a couple pictures of the birthday girl with her cake--the one below she was attempting to blow the candle out, but ended up needing a little help from her sisters and cousins. What was hiding inside the cake? We'll you can't make a tiger cake with out making the inside tiger striped. To know how to do this technique, check out my post here where I make a zebra striped cake. Ugga Mugga!

Okay, so technically, my birthday is the day BEFORE the first day of school this year, but growing up it was on the first day of school quite often. It's a good thing I loved school! :) This year we have Meet The Teacher on August 20, then (my birthday) the 21st is a teacher workday and the official day for the kids is the 22nd. I love to use my birthday to model how we will celebrate birthdays for the year. ;) I thought about giving the kids an invitation to a birthday party on the first day of school (no presents allowed, of course!) just to get them REALLY excited about that first day. I'm not sure though. What kind of super fun, really cool activities could we do to celebrate? Any ideas? I've been thinking about this because yesterday I went to school and put up my birthday display. I FINALLY found those giant pixie stix at Dollar General and they were only 25 cents each!! I created my little balloons and stuck them in my birthday display! For my Hollywood theme I used pencils with stars taped to the tops and red and gold bags. I found these short-ish gift bags and tissue that coordinates with my theme at Target! What else do you do for students' birthdays? I'm going to switch up the traditional "Happy Birthday" song (because my kiddos DROVE me CRAZY with all the add-ons at the end last year....at first they were cute, but then as the year went on it lasted about 10 minutes. When the "EAT MORE CHICKEN" line was added last year, I knew I needed a change!) Instead, we're going to try this Happy Birthday Cheer that I found on Pinterest (of course, I needed to cutesy it up...click to download your copy). I also have my students work on a page to create a "Happy Birthday" book for the birthday student for morning work instead of the traditional assignment that morning. Since the birthday kid doesn't need to create a page, he/she gets to design the cover of the book! The birthday kid also gets to pull a birthday coupon from a birthday bag for some type of special treat for the day. At the end of the day (while waiting on car numbers, etc), the birthday kid gets to play a "Birthday Bonanza Game" with a friend of his/her choice. It's really just a sneaky way to get in some addition and subtraction practice (there are one, two, and three digit card sets for different times of the year), but they think it's FUN! I want to know - what do you do to celebrate student birthdays? And, what do you think I should do about the first day of school? Celebrate or not? I've always wanted to have a party/celebration for the FIRST day of school (shouldn't we have kids celebrate the start of school rather than the end of school?), but I definitely don't want parents to send in gifts. Help me out here....what do you think? Also, swim by to visit Courtney at Swimming into Second today and you could win the Non-Fiction Text Features Sign set from Teacher's Clubhouse! Click below.
