"You are your own firework already," said Josh Brolin, who is also dad to older children Eden and Trevor
It's birthday time for both of my boys. Though 2 years apart, their birthdays are 6 days apart, so it's natural to have one party for both. With both boys (turning 6 and 4) being huge fans of kids TV show, The Octonauts, finding a theme for this years party was easy peasy, and producing the parts was challenging and fun! Here's what I came up with (and some fun ideas to try - if you're doing one too)... Easy party hats and eye patches were made with coloured card. A 'party room' was set out within our open plan playroom, using walls of seaweed (streamers). Inside that space we set up a central table, set with sea shells, small sea creatures and the food. The 'coral' and 'fish biscuits' were homemade cheese puffs, the chocolate bars were re-badged with Octonaut characters, various confectionery items became 'electric eels' and 'blob fish'. 'Octodogs' (made by slitting legs through red-skinned hotdogs prior to cooking) were served with 'ink sauce' (tomato sauce tinted with blue colouring!) A large hand drawn 'Peso' poster on the wall became a game, following an episode of the Octonauts where he wins an "Iron Clam" award, we had the children 'pin the clam' (a silver painted shell - each with a childs name inside it) in his hand - blindfolded. Later the children were given a treasure map and were sent on a hunt to find their treasure boxes (which would be their goodie bag to take home). Finally, sharing a party is one concession, but I wanted the boys to have a cake each, so they can blow out their own candles. They were each quite sure about their favourite characters, which were not so tricky to replicate in cake form: Dashi (above) for 4 year old Hugo, and Captain Barnacles for Dylan, 6. A fun party, and I'm exhausted! I should have remembered after last years party! Now, who's got the vino? *EDITED: Check out the comments section for loads of FAQs. Seems Octonaut parties are still awesome and our little party has inspired ideas for yours!

This past Sunday was Owen’s 4th Birthday Party. Since every year it is either windy or rainy for his Birthday we knew we had to plan something indoors. We chose to have the party at our house this year and get some fun entertainment for the kiddos. If you remember back in November we attended Owen’s friend Olivia’s Princess Party and Snow White was there. Well, we found out that Snow White also provides Boy Themed Birthday Parties too, and since the kids LOVED her we decided why not call on her to be the awesome entertainment for Owen’s party. We let him choose between four themes; Cowboy, Clown, Pirate or Firefighter. He really wanted to have a Pirate Themed Party so Pirate it was. Owen invited 14 of his closest friends (mostly neighborhood friends and some friends from pre-school). 10 friends were able to come and they all seemed to have a blast! I turned to the awesome Pinterest for ideas to help me put together a fun Pirate Party for Captain Owen’s 4th Birthday Party. I sure hope you enjoy what I came up with, I had an absolute blast planning his party this year. Okay here we go…. Here are the kids all dressed in their special Pirate Outfits I hand made them. I think they came out GREAT! Autumn was not too pleased about having to wear the tutu. She stood in the same spot for about 10 minutes after I dressed her and kept saying, “I DONE. Get it OFF!” Lol. After lots and lots of distractions she finally forgot about the tutu and enjoyed the party. She is so darn stubborn! All dressed waiting for the guests to arrive! The first guest to arrive was Cousin Abigail! She was dressed in the cutest pirate outfit Mommy made out of recycled clothes she already had. Before we get to the party pics, I will take a brief moment to share all the fun party decorations. I hand made all the invitations and party decorations so that saved a lot of money! I had so much fun making all this stuff so enjoy. Each guest got to take home A Handmade Felt Eye Patch, a Treat Bag full of gold candy and tattoos, and a play pirate Sword. Ok, it’s party time now!!!! Here is Owen welcoming in the special Pirate to his Party. She is so AWESOME!!!!! The Pirate was here for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Her entertainment included Parachute Fun, Freeze Dancing, Limbo, Hokey Pokey, A Magic Show, Face Painting and Balloon Animals. She is amazing with kids and had them ALL engaged the entire time. If you are interested she has a Facebook page called, Parties by Kara. I highly recommend her for any kid party! Parachute fun with all his pirate buddies. Everyone did a great job in coming dressed in their pirate gear. Limbo & Freeze Dance. Magic Show. She had Owen close his eyes and when he opened them he discovered she gave him the magic touch to help assist her in all her magic tricks. Owen LOVED this part! After we sang Happy Birthday to Owen and everyone had a cupcake, it was time to say goodbye to the Pirate. Thank you so much Pirate Kara you were GREAT and the kids LOVED you! Then it was present time. A HUGE thanks to all of Owen’s guests for all the wonderful gifts!!!! Owen got a lot of Hot Wheel toys and cars. His friends know him very well. He was ecstatic about all his new cars!!!! Owen was so lucky to have Pampo, Nana & Mimi at his party. Thanks again Mimi from traveling from CO to come to Owen’s Party! Happy Birthday Sweet Owen. Mommy and Daddy are so glad we got to throw you a special Birthday Party!!!! Love you kid! After all the guests headed home we had a family BBQ with Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, A veggie Tray, Baked Beans and Chips and Dip. Uncle Chris showed up just in time for the BBQ. Poor weekend working daddies miss all the fun. Crazy Autumn couldn’t decide between eating if she wanted to be a Pirate or a Cowgirl?!?! Lol Owen and Pampo had a BLAST playing with all his new toys after dinner. Especially the awesome Dinosaur Track Olivia got him. He has been wanting this soooooo bad. Thanks again Olivia! Happy Happy 4th Birthday Captain Owen! And a HUGE thanks to all his friend who attended his party. You are all a big part of Owen’s life and I am thankful for each and every one of you for being such good friends to my son!

We have a Peep and the Big Wide World theme going this year for birthday cakes. I don't think that this cake looks a lot like the Peep that we see on the cartoon, but this was image that Amelia chose for her cake: I think she turned out pretty well...although I think she looks a wee bit angrier in my cake than in the image. But, thankfully, Amelia didn't care. :) Our favorite neighbors, the H family, joined us for cake and ice cream. . It took her about 6 tries to get her candles blown out. She blew at least 3 times before extinguishing even one candle. As far as I know, the germs that ended up on the cake didn't result in illness. :) On a side note, I love Olivia's face in the next photo!!
