Vacation Bible School 2010! "Joseph's Journey: From Prison to Palace" was our theme this year. The church was turned into EGPYT for the children by the amazing vision and dedication of our Faith Formation Minister of Children's Education, Rit Vogel. She is so awesome at bringing an idea to fruition and making it meaningful, purposeful, and Biblical! Welcome to Egypt! Shiny gold paint is awesome! The custodians loved us...sand on the floor! "Hip, Hip, Hip, Hippopotamus... Hip, hip, hooray, God Loves VBS!" Rit found the design, traced it onto a mural, and a bunch of us painted it. See what I mean about bringing an idea to life!? Too cool. Yet another amazingly colorful mural! DUCK! (where?) In the photo! Apparently, dead ducks were common in Egypt. Didn't know that. Do you like my grapes? Too bad you can't see the tri-color depth I added. Yum. The kiddos got to walk under this upon entering the Great Hall! Welcome to Egypt! Two of the many Egyptian gods. We taught the kids lots about how Egyptians believed in many gods, yet Joseph believed in the ONE true God! Cellophane + fan + light = FIRE! Only because we all adore Rit is a photo of a sn*** on this blog. She worked so hard to bring this multi-layered, slithering beast to life! Being the Celebration Leader certainly had its perks: check out my bling! ...and my headpiece... ...and the eye make-up! Ta-da! Brenda-patra in Egypt! The Marketplace: PVC pipe holding up all these colorful pieces of fabric to create an open-marketplace feel. Different stations, including basket-weaving, jewelry, hieroglyphics, etc. VBS rocks. All the adults and teen leaders were dressed up, too! Check out the urns! A water bottle fits inside! One of our blankets for the Operation Kid to Kid, where blankets were tied and will be sent to children in Africa. The Music Room was a vineyard this year. Minus the wine, of course. Hanging grapes and all! "...there will never be another..." "You are the One True God..." "...You raise me high and lift me up..." So sad this is blurry, but so happy to be dancing with Brooke! Each day, four characters explained what we were learning about for the day. Bible verses, lessons, and the main point. The 5 days included: hope, special abilities, wisdom, forgiveness, and family. You can also see our pyramid of God Sightings, where the kids used bricks to list places where they had seen God throughout their day. The kids were divided into Egyptian families this year, mixing up the age levels. It was great to see the leadership of the older kids - lots of little ones naturally paired with their older 'brothers and sisters' for the week. A God Sighting, for sure! The picture is perfectly creepy. Here's Joseph, still in the prison. Yeah! Joseph made it to the Palace! Huge celebration on Friday, with parents encircling the room, blankets being blessed, and 140+ children happily singing and dancing those wonderful VBS songs that stay in your head all year long! An energizing, exhausting and completely exhilarating Egyptian adventure! I can't wait for next year!

Passage: Familiarize yourself with the following passage: Genesis 37 At this point in the life of Jacob, he has 11 sons (Benjamin comes later), only one of whom came from his favorite wife, Rachel. Because of this, Joseph is Jacob’s favorite son. This causes a great deal of jealousy between Joseph and his brothers. To make matters worse, Jacob wanted to give Joseph a token of his love by making a special coat of many colors for him. It is around this time that God gives Joseph two dreams. In his dreams, Joseph sees 11 sheaves of grain and the sun, moon, and stars bowing down to him. Joseph shared his dreams with his brothers, who became indignant. Not long after these dream, Joseph’s brothers went out to tend the sheep. Jacob sent Joseph to check on them and bring him back a report of their actions. When Joseph was nearing his brothers, they purposed to kill him. When he arrived, Joseph was grabbed by his brother and thrown into a dry well. Later that day, rather than kill him, Joseph’s brothers pulled him out of the well and sold him as a slave to some traders headed to Egypt. They took Joseph’s coat, tore it and covered it in blood. When they returned home, the brothers showed the coat to Jacob, who assumed that Joseph had been killed by a wild animal. Despite all this, God was Joseph and continued to be with him in Egypt. Object Lesson: A Chosen Few: Supplies Needed: • Snacks, enough for everyone • 3 or 4 plates • Two different colors of paper Direction: 1. Before class, cut your colored paper into small squares, making only 3 or 4 out of one color and all the rest out of the other color. Make sure there are enough pieces for each child to have one. 2. Set a table with 3 o 4 plates with snacks. 3. As your children enter the class, have them select one of the colored squares. After everyone has a piece of paper, tell the ones with the minority color that today they are extra special and they can go to the table and enjoy a snack. Instruct all the other kids to stay where they are until the others are done eating. When the snacks are finished, have everyone join you for a discussion. 4. Ask the kids who got the snack what it felt like to be chosen for something special. Ask the kids who did not get a snack what it felt like to be left out. Bring out the idea of being jealous. Ask if it was fair for you to give only a few people a snack. Ask the children when they have felt jealous in real life. 5. Tell everyone that today they will hear a story about some brothers who were jealous, but first it is snack time for everyone! Memory Verse: Proverbs 19:9 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish. Jesus Connection: Joseph is considered one of the best types of Christ in the Old Testament. It is very easy for us to see many parallels between Joseph and Jesus in this story. Joseph was loved by his father (vs. 3) and God says that Jesus is “My beloved Son” (Matthew 3:17). Joseph was sent by his father to his brothers (vs. 13-14) and Jesus was sent to His brother, (first) to the children of Israel (Hebrews 2:11). Joseph was hated by his brothers (vs. 4) and Jesus was also hated by His brothers (John 7:5). There was a plot against Joseph (vs. 20) as well as Jesus (John 11:53).These are just a few of the connections that can be made between Joseph and Jesus and there will be many more as the story of Joseph unfolds in later chapters of Genesis. Songs: Joseph’s Song *This is a great son to do over the course of the Joseph stories. Sing only the parts that cover that week’s story and build the song up week by week until you are singing the whole song! Games/Activities: A Coat of Colors Supplies needed: • Two large paper bags (or two large pieces of butcher block paper) • Colorful paper torn into strips • Glue sticks Directions: 1. Before class, tare the colorful paper into strips. Cut holes in the bottom and sides of the paper bag so that it can be put over a child’s head and worn as a coat. (If using butcher block paper, cut a hole in the middle for the head so that it is like a poncho.) 2. Divide the children into two teams. Ask for one volunteer from each team. Put the paper coat on the volunteer and have those two children stand on one side of the room. 3. On the other side of the room have a table with all the color paper and several glue sticks. When you say go, have one child from each team put glue on a piece of paper, run to their team member with the paper coat on and stick the paper to the coat. At the end of a certain amount of time (5-10 mins) or when the paper runs out, judge the two coats to see who is most covered. The team with the most covered, colorful coat wins! Crafts: A Coat of Colors Supplies Needed: • Colorful paper torn into pieces • Plain white paper • Joseph’s coat template • Glue sticks • Scissors Directions: 1. Give each child a plain white piece of paper. Have them glue colorful pieces of paper all over. Cut the excess off with scissors. 2. Cut the coat out of the coat template. You will be using the paper that has a hole in the shape of a coat, so try to cut in such a way as to keep all 4 sides intact. 3. Put glue all over the cut template. Apply the glued template to the colorful paper. You can now see a colorful coat through the hole in the template. Coloring Page:

Today's lesson finishes up the book of Genesis and Joseph! Next quarter will be Moses and there is so much to learn from him! We continued our Joseph in Egypt lesson with the kids wearing the Egyptian outfits. There is a quick printable project for today. It is a good reminder to love God no matter what is happening in your life. Joseph stayed faithful while he was a servant and stayed faithful even with all the power he was given in Egypt. There are so many lessons that could be learned from Joseph & Moses! Thanks for stopping by! Review: This is our last week that we will be learning about Joseph. His brothers sold him, and the traders took him to Egypt where he was sold again to Potiphar. Last week, the butler and chief baker were put in prison with Joseph. Joseph told them what their dreams meant. When Pharaoh needed his dreams interpreted, the butler remembered Joseph. Joseph told Pharaoh what the dreams meant. They were going to have 7 good years and then 7 years of famine. (Not enough food) Pharaoh put Joseph second in command; Joseph only had to answer to Pharaoh. God was with Joseph. He had two sons. Joseph stored up all the food he could during the 7 good years and today, our lesson is during the 7 famine years. This week's lesson is found in Genesis 42-50. During the famine, Joseph’s family is worried about food and decided to go to Egypt to buy corn. Only ten of the brothers went, Benjamin didn’t go. Joseph is the governor (or prince) of Egypt. Remember, everyone had to talk to Joseph in order to buy food in Egypt. When they went before Joseph, and bowed, he recognized them, but they didn’t know who Joseph was. Joseph asked them “Why are you here” and the brothers told Joseph that they wanted to buy food. Joseph said “No, you are spies.” They told Joseph that they were brothers and the youngest was still at home with their father. Joseph told them to send one brother home to get the youngest and the others would have to stay in Egypt until they proved they were not spies. The brothers started talking to each other saying that this was punishment for what they did to Joseph. Joseph was using an interpreter so the brothers thought he couldn’t understand them, but when Joseph heard what they said, he had to turn away to cry. Joseph tied up Simeon and had his brethren's sacks filled with the corn and he ordered the money they brought to be put in the sacks. When the brothers went to feed the animals, they found the money. Joseph's brothers almost passed out! (Genesis 42:28) They were so scared to find the money in the corn sacks! They told their father that the governor of Egypt talked mean to them and accused them of being spies. When the food ran out again, the brothers worried about returning to Egypt for more food. But Egypt was the only country with food to sell. They told Jacob that the governor told them not to return unless they brought their youngest brother. The brothers returned to Egypt and told Joseph’s servant that they had returned with the money that was in their sacks last time and enough money to buy more food. Simeon was brought out to them. Then, the brothers were taken into Joseph’s house and waited until noon to see Joseph. They bowed at his feet (just as Joseph's dreams said they would!) and Joseph asked how they were and is their father still alive? They told Joseph that their father is good and then Joseph looked up and saw his young brother, Benjamin. Joseph had to leave, because he was so happy to see Benjamin, he wanted to cry. Later, Joseph fed his brothers and sent them gifts. Joseph sent Benjamin 5 times the gifts that he sent to his other brothers. Joseph had their sacks filled full of food. Again, he had their money put in the sacks and he had his silver cup put in Benjamin’s sack. After just a little time passed, Joseph had his servants follow the brothers and ask them if they repaid Joseph by stealing from him. Joseph's servants searched every sack and found the money and silver cup. When Joseph told them that the one’s sack that held the silver cup would have to stay and be a servant, they said that they couldn’t do that. They told Joseph that their father would die if they came back without Benjamin. Joseph started to cry. He sent all of his servants out and with only his brothers left, Joseph told them that he was Joseph, their brother! He said not to be upset, because it was God’s plan for him to be in Egypt during this famine. Joseph hugged Benjamin and told them to bring their families to Egypt to live because there was still 5 years of famine, and he didn’t want them to die. Joseph gave his brothers wagons and food to get back home. When the brothers told Jacob that Joseph was still alive and governor of Egypt, Jacob couldn’t believe what they were saying. Jacob decided to go see Joseph. He was 130 years old. Joseph climbed in his chariot to go see Jacob when he arrived in Egypt, and they were so happy to see each other! Jacob went before Pharaoh and after they talked, Joseph took his family out to the best land in Egypt. Pharaoh told them to live there. Jacob was able to meet Joseph’s 2 sons Manasseh & Ephraim. Jacob lived in Egypt for 17 years before he died (147 years). Joseph was 110 when he died, and he was buried in Egypt. For the kids take home, I used the above brown bags (far right, at Hobby Lobby) and we put corn inside. I found the clear glasses at Dollar Tree and used the silver paint to paint them. I gave them a money bag for that part of the lesson, then they added the silver cup at the correct time. The brown money bags I purchase on eBay a lot cheaper, and they come from out of the country, so give yourself time if you plan to buy them that way. For the teacher visuals I used during the lesson, I found the silver cup at Party City, I used the same money bags the kids were given. I found the bags at Hobby Lobby for $1.99, in their assorted bag department. Then I added the corn (Purchased at TSC, or local farm supply store) into both bags. For the first bag, I just added the money bag, then the second bag, I added the money bag and the small silver cup. Today's project is a quick one but is a great reminder to love God and our family. Joseph put God first and obey Him, and he still loved his brothers even though they sold him into slavery. These are in black & white so they can be printed on color cardstock/paper. Cut the 2 large hearts as one so it can be folded in half. I used a hole punch and added ribbon so the kids can hang on these on their door handles. Or you can just fold them like a card. The kids will have heart stickers to add to them, or you can let them draw and color hearts. (The photo shows the front & back.) You can print it here. Click here to print. Even though Joseph had been sold into slavery by his brothers and unfairly imprisoned in Egypt, God blessed him in everything he did. God allowed Joseph to become a trusted leader in Egypt and the world. These God Was with Joseph in Egypt Bible activities are about Joseph's faithfulness to the Lord in a foreign land.

This week finishes up Joseph as we learn about his authority in Egypt, and he is reunited with his family. This is the final lesson for Genesis and is lesson 13 in the first quarter of a year of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening. These are the visuals I used when I taught this lesson to 2nd grade. Because of time and preschoolers' attention span, I seriously condensed this lesson. I didn't teach about them going back & forth or these items being in their bags. Joseph could really be a whole quarter to teach the specifics! But time didn't allow for that. As it is, this is the longest lesson in this quarter! This is our last lesson about Joseph! Joseph is in the book of Genesis (42-46). Genesis is the first book of the Old Testament. Joseph was taken to Egypt and after being a servant for Potiphar, he was put in prison. When Joseph told Pharaoh what his dreams meant (with God’s help), Pharaoh put Joseph second in charge in Egypt. Joseph was the governor and was in charge of the food supply. God said there would be seven years with plenty of food, but now it is the seven years of famine (not enough food). Everyone that comes to Egypt to buy food has to see Joseph. Joseph is doing very well and stays faithful to God. Remember Joseph’s father was Jacob? Jacob had 12 sons and he had given Joseph a coat of many colors. Joseph’s father sent 10 of his sons to Egypt to buy food. Since everyone had to see Joseph to buy food, his brothers did too! When Joseph’s brothers stood before Joseph, they bowed. Joseph recognized them, but they didn’t know who Joseph was. Joseph said he thought they were spies! But they told Joseph they weren’t spies, they were brothers. They said they left their youngest brother at home with their father. Joseph told them not to come back for more food unless their youngest brother comes with them also. When Jacob and his family ran out of food, they were scared to return to Egypt. Egypt was the only country that had food for sale. They had to have food! This time, they took their youngest brother Benjamin with them to Egypt. All the brothers were taken to Joseph’s house. When Joseph arrived, they bowed down to Joseph. Joseph asked about their father. Then Joseph saw his youngest brother, Benjamin! Remember, the brothers do not know who Joseph is. Joseph was so happy to see Benjamin! Joseph had their sacks filled full of food and they left. When a little time passed, Joseph sent his servant to bring the brothers back to him. After Judah (Joseph’s brother) begged Joseph not to harm Benjamin, Joseph started to cry. Joseph told them, “I am your brother Joseph!” Joseph told his brothers not to be upset, because it was God’s plan for him to be in Egypt during this famine. He hugged Benjamin and told them to bring their families to Egypt to live because there was still five years of famine and he wanted them to stay alive and be able to eat. He gave them wagons and food to get back home. When they told Jacob that Joseph was still alive and governor of Egypt, Jacob decided to go see Joseph! When Joseph saw his family coming, he went to see Jacob and they were so happy to be together! Joseph took his family out to the best land in Egypt to live. Joseph loved and obeyed God. We used this project with last year's class, and they loved it. This takes some prep time for the teacher, but it is worth the time. These would also be great to have for early arrivers to play with and review Joseph. You can see more about this project here.
