The book of Genesis has quite a few stories about significant people, but no one gets more chapters than Joseph in the Bible (other than Jesus, of course)! The Story of Joseph in the Bible
Once upon a time, there was a boy named Joseph who lived in Israel as the son of Jacob and grandson of Isaac. Joseph grew up in a family that had many sons leaving him with little attention, especially from his father. However, Jacob actually did favor Joseph as his favorite son giving him a special coat as a gift that earned the envy of all of his brothers because they thought he would become the eventual leader of the family while they would be neglected. Joseph made the situation even worse when he told two of his brothers that he dreamt that he saw his brothers bowing down to him. When Joseph was 17, most of the brothers conspired to kill him while his oldest brother convinced the others that they should only throw him into a pit of salt planning to rescue Joseph in secret. In a sad turn of events, the other brothers sold Joseph as a slave to passing traders after dragging him out of the quarry. They then drenched Joseph's coat in goat blood to give to their father saying Joseph had been killed by a wild beast. While I don't own any piece of clothing that can compare to the awesomeness of Joseph's coat, I do own a "puffy" vest that keeps me super warm = happy. Over the course of my life, I have owned several of these vests because they seem to work for the fall, winter, and spring seasons when the weather is not too great. Additionally, the vest is pretty comfortable and not to bulky like a lot of coats so it is probably my favorite piece of clothing. Pretty stylish, huh?
Believe it or not, this is a loaded question. Bible skeptics cite this question as an example of the Bible contradicting itself, and therefore being unreliable. Although many of the supposed “contradictions” in the Bible can be explained and proven to not actually be contradictions at all when the proper context is applied, this one … Continue reading "How Many of Jacob’s Descendants Went to Egypt- 70 or 75?"

VERSES: Genesis 29:31-35; 30:1-24; 35:18 MEMORY VERSE: Genesis 30:24 "And she called his name Joseph..." BOOK TO REMEMBER: Review Genesis through 2 Chronicles PRAYER: Thank God for our mothers and fathers who love us and take care of us and see that we receive the things that we really need. Thank God for hearing and listening to our prayers. SPECIAL SONG: THE SONS OF JACOB Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin, Those are the sons of Jacob! TWELVE! VISUAL AID: Four Tents (For directions, read 'Activity" instructions below, but make it larger, perhaps on a 22" x 28" poster board.) LESSON POINTS: God knew that Jacob loved Leah less than he loved Rachel, so God provided Leah with Jacob's first child. She named him Reuben. Then she had another son and she named him Simeon. Leah had another son and she named him Levi. Then she had another son and named him Judah. Rachel couldn't have any children and this made her very sad. Jacob had another wife named Bilhah who was Rachel's handmaid and she, too had a baby boy and named him Dan. AND she had another son and named him Naphtali. Jacob had a third wife named Zilpah who was Leah's handmaid and she, too, had a son and named him Gad. AND she had another son and named him Asher. Then Leah had another baby boy and named him Issachar. AND she had another son and named him Zebulun. The last baby Leah had was a little girl and she named her Dinah. Then the Bible says that God remembered Rachel and had listened to her prayers and she had a baby boy. Let's turn to Genesis 30:24 to see what she named him. (Read verse.) Let's put our bookmarks right here. What was the baby's name? Joseph! Baby Joseph! What joy Rachel felt holding her sweet baby boy! And, a little later, Rachel had one more baby boy and Jacob named him Benjamin. SO...how many sons did Jacob have all together? Let's name them and count them! (Perhaps sing the song above.) Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin...those are the sons of Jacob! Twelve! ACTIVITY: Four Tents Materials needed: Four different patterned fabrics (any fabric will do--old shirts, sheets, anything!) , a piece of any colored 12" x 18" construction paper, twelve 1/2" circles for babies' faces, scissors, glue, crayons, a pencil for older students. It is an easier task if the Bible teacher cuts out four triangles for tents prior to coming to Bible class. Tip: Cut a 6" x 6" square diagonally to make two tents. Take a look at Step 11, the Bible teacher may have additional prep time with the sons' names. Pass out the larger piece of construction paper to each student. This is the foundation. One by one, pass out a triangle of fabric This is a tent. If they can, each student cuts each triangle up the middle WITHOUT CUTTING IT IN TWO PIECES. (The Bible teacher may need to help. No problem if they cut it in two, just glue it back like a tent.) Repeat until all four triangles are cut to resemble tents. Glue four triangles on the foundation, landscape-wise. ONLY GLUE THE TWO OUTSIDE EDGES OF THE TRIANGLE TO THE PAPER, SO THE 'DOOR' WILL OPEN. The student writes "Leah," "Bilhah," "Zilpah," and "Rachel' above each tent. At the top of the paper, write "Twelve Sons Of Jacob" and "Genesis 29:31-35; 30:1-24; 35:18", so the parents know that the story came from the Bible. Each student takes twelve small circles and draws a face on each. Older students can probably cut their own circles. Student glues the appropriate number of babies inside each tent. (If additional room is needed, 'babies' may be glued to the inside of the tent door.) Somewhere in each mother's tent, the student can write the name of the right baby on the inside of the tent on the paper or 'floor' of the tent. If students cannot write, the Bible teacher may need to type or write the babies' names on extra paper for the student and the student can at least glue the matching baby to right mother. Since the lesson is a short one, review the twelve sons of Jacob's names. This may be a good time to sing the Special Song again and again! (See above.)

We recently had a lesson about the 12 Sons of Jacob. I love teaching about Joseph and his brothers. The KIDDOS seem to get excited about how BIG of a family Jacob had. This LESSON introduces a LOT of names. Some are easy for the KIDDOS to remember and some are very difficult. We practice the names of the Sons of Jacob through SONS, CHANTS, RHYMES and GAMES. Since memorizing the Sons of Jacob is an opportunity for the KIDDOS to earn a BIBLE BADGE...we work hard during this lesson to GET THOSE NAMES memorized. :-) Our Visual Aid... 12 Sons 3D puff containers were very helpful in the KIDDOS memorizing the names of the 12 Sons of Jacob. I also, have cards made up that share the meaning of each of the son's names along with their mother and their birth order number. Its amazing how quickly the KIDDOS seemed to remember the meaning of each of the son's names. This is one of the songs we sing that helps the KIDDOS memorize the names of Jacob's sons in birth order. The KIDDOS memory verse was Psalm 127:3. This is one of my FAVORITE Bible Verses!!! The KIDDOS made a Dodecahedron for their TAKE HOME project. It is a 12 sided object and they added sticker of each son of Jacob. The sticker pictures are made using clip art by Phillip Martin. I did have to cut around and make some WORK. :-) Bible Clip Art I added names and ran them through my sticker maker machine. The KIDDOS LOVED adding the stickers!!!! Just to keep the Dodecahedron from collapsing we stuffed each one with tissue paper. The KIDDOS did have to have a WORD of Warning...NO THROWING them in the church building. The following week the KIDDOS made these for their EXPLORER JOURNAL ACTIVITY. We call them 12 Sons Flip Flaps Activity. I did all the slicing of the doors/flaps...the KIDDOS colored the pictures of the Sons of Jacob as we sang their names. Here are a few more VISUALS that I used during these lessons. I have had these for SEVERAL years. I made them a long time ago. I also had this visual on the table. I used it as we sang the names, reviewed their name meaning or recalled their birth order. This is a "fun" lesson to teach KIDDOS. They seem to be drawn into this BIG FAMILY. They enjoyed learning the meaning of each son's name and earning their BADGE for knowing the names!!! Blessings, Ronda
The story of Joseph is an interesting journey of bad and good. Joseph was kind, faithful and prophetic in his ability to understand dreams. He had some very bad years, betrayal, slavery, imprisonment. Through faith, he was able to get through these bad years until things turned around for him. He became a leader and […]
