The first of a three-volume series on the teachings of John Wesley has been divided into chapters and verses for detailed study and cross-referencing. Together, these three volumes will present one of the most thorough and exhaustive studies ever done on Wesley's most beloved, yet, controversial doctrines. (Christian)\nJohn Wesley (1703-1791) is the chief architect and source of inspiration to the teaching commonly referred to as Christian perfection. Among his many publications, the book that best summarizes his teachings on holiness is A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, as believed and taught by the Reverend Mr. John Wesley, from the year 1725 to the year 1777. For many years this timeless classic has been reproduced in various formats. Now, for the first time, John Wesley's 'A Plain Account of Christian Perfection' is being offered in a definitive Annotated Edition by Mark K. Olson. This edition is volume one in a projected three volume series. The Annotated Edition offers the following: - The entire text has been divided into chapters and verses for detailed study and cross-referencing. - The introduction examines in detail when and why Wesley wrote A Plain Account. - The verse by verse commentary discusses the history and background behind the text, offering unsurpassed explanation of Wesley's doctrine of perfect love. - Five end notes address Wesley's early doctrinal development, the impact of Aldersgate on his perfection doctrine, many testimonies of attaining perfection, and other relevant material from early Methodism. - Over 150 quotations from Wesley's sermons, writings, and letters offer unlimited clarification to his views on perfection. - The insights of many Wesley scholars are included: Albert Outler, Randy Maddox, Kenneth Collins, William Greathouse, Thomas Oden, Harold Lindstrom, Stephen Gunter, H. Ray Dunning, Theodore Runyon, plus many others. - A timeline details every event in Wesley's lifetime corresponding to A Plain Account. - Several exhaustive indexes are included: scripture, annotation, subject, author, Wesley quotations, and two synonym indexes from Wesley's Journal and A Plain Account. - The Essential Reading Section further empowers the study of Wesley's theology of perfection. Included are: o Twenty key sermons, along with their dates and locations in Wesley's Works (both the Jackson and Bicentennial editions). o Wesley's most important writings on perfection, listing their date and location in his Works. o 250 letters relevant to his theology of perfection. The index includes their date and location in Wesley's Works, with a brief description of their contents. Two additional volumes are planned in the series. John Wesley's Theology of Perfection will offer specialized studies for those wanting to dig deeper into Wesley's theology of perfection. The third volume, John Wesley's Doctrine of Christian Perfection, will present in systematic format every facet of Wesley's views on perfection. The projected release for both volumes is 2006 and 2007. Together, these three volumes will present one of the most thorough and exhaustive studies ever done on Wesley's most beloved, yet, most controversial doctrine.

The Routledge Companion to John Wesley provides an overview of the work and ideas of one of the principal founders of Methodism, John Wesley (1703-1791). Wesley remains highly influential, especially within the worldwide Methodist movement of some eighty million people. As a preacher and religious reformer his efforts led to the rise of a global Protestant movement, but the wide-ranging topics addressed in his writings also suggest a mind steeped in the intellectual developments of the North Atlantic, early modern world. His numerous publications cover not only theology but ethics, history, aesthetics, politics, human rights, health and wellbeing, cosmology and ecology. This volume places Wesley within his eighteenth-century context, analyses his contribution to thought across his multiple interests, and assesses his continuing relevance today. It contains essays by an international team of scholars, drawn from within the Methodist tradition and beyond. This is a valuable reference particularly for scholars of Methodist Studies, theology, church history and religious history. | Author: Clive Murray Norris, Joseph W. “John Wesley teaching the Indians”John Wesley (1703-1791) was a minister in the Anglican Church who founded the Methodist movement. He organized Methodist societies throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Recognizing that outdoor services were effective in reaching those who did not attend churches, Wesley took the opportunity to preach wherever he could assemble listeners. He traveled throughout the land, preaching two or three times a day. In 1735 he went to the Georgia Colony where he served as the rector of Christ Church of Savannah. While in the Georgia Colony, he ministered not only the English settlers, but also to the Indians in Georgia.

FORGET WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT JOHN WESLEY, THE 'FOLK HERO\" OF METHODISM and meet Wesley, the man behind the methods! Who is Wesley? John Wesley (1703-1791) was an ordained Anglican priest who: - had been chased out of America; - was banned from Anglican Church pulpits; - began the 'Second Reformation\"; - was constantly attacked by mobs; - had an eye for the ladies; - was not allowed to marry the woman he loved; - married on the 'rebound\" - saw his marriage become the nightmare he always feared; - had a loyal maid who drove away his wife; - was called 'The First Protestant Pope\"; - found his own followers separating from him; - remained an Anglican priest until his dying day; - gave away over £30,000. yet died with only £10. This contemporary adaptation of Wesley's life translates his eighteenth century into our twenty-first century by asking 'If Wesley had access to modern travel and communications technology, would his Methodist movement have been any different?\" As a character study, which explores the ambiguities of the man himself, this edition also features annotated notes to maintain the integrity of both fact and fictionalization by identifying wherever literary license has been exercised at the expense of historical accuracy.

By salvation , Wesley meant: ‘not barely, according to the vulgar notion, deliverance from hell, or going to heaven; but a present deliverance from sin…’” (Melvin E. Dieter)
Pursuing his calling with singleness of vision, John Wesley (1703 -1791) defied the strength of angry mobs and longwithstanding traditions to offer the hope of Christ to millions of people who were outside the influence of the churches of the day. Passionate and tireless, this Anglican clergyman rode a quarter of a million miles on horseback during his lifetime, stopping to preach more than forty thousand sermons in open fields, churches, and barns. Focused on God's love and holy living, the movement Wesley founded quickly multiplied in vibrant Methodist societies all over England and would soon influence far-flung nations for Christ.
