John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) American artist. Considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. Oil on canvas, The Tate, London: www.tate.org.uk/art/work/N01615 ............ Sargent's inspiration for this picture came during an 1885 boating expedition on the Thames, with Chinese lanterns hanging among trees and lilies. In the country, Sargent was able to work for only a few minutes each evening when the light was exactly right. He would place his easel and paints beforehand, and pose his models in anticipation of the few moments when he could paint the mauvish light of dusk. The painting's title comes from Mazzinghi's song The Wreath: "Have you seen my Flora pass this way?" response "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose."

Sargent accurately renders the tonal value of a scene rather than faithful depictions of objects, figures, or shapes.

Born in Florence to American expatriate parents, John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) is considered Europe's leading portrait painter of the Edwardian era. He was educated at both Accademia delle Belle Arti and Paris's École des Beaux Arts. While in Paris, under the guidance of Émile–Auguste Carolus–Duran, a portraitist and muralist, Sargent learned to paint directly from observation without first sketching, employing a fluidity, influenced by the Impressionists. Sargent created more than 2,900 paintings, mainly portraits and landscapes from his travels across the Atlantic, Europe, the Middle East and America. We've collected some of his finest public domain paintings in this collection, including his most famous opus, Madame X, they are all available to download under the CC0 license.
