Passage Familiarize yourself with the following: Genesis 41:1-57 Pharaoh had two nightmares. When he awoke from his sleep, he was still troubled by his dreams and called for all the wise men of the city to come and telling him the meaning of his dreams. No one was able to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams. The cupbearer to Pharaoh remembered at this time how Joseph was able to interpret both his dream and the dream of Pharaoh’s chief baker while they were in jail and both interpretations came to pass exactly as they were told. Impressed by this, Pharaoh called for Joseph to be brought from the jail. When he arrived, Pharaoh told Joseph his dreams: 7 ugly, skinny cows ate up 7 beautiful, fat cows and 7 pitiful heads of grain ate up 7 healthy heads of grain. Joseph told Pharaoh that his dreams were from God. God was showing Pharaoh what he was about to do. There was going to be 7 years of great plenty in the land of Egypt. After this there would be 7 years of famine so severe that no one would be able to remember the years of plenty. Joseph recommended that Pharaoh put someone in charge of collecting grain during the years of plenty and storing it so that it could be given out during the years of famine. This way the people would be saved. Pharaoh was so impressed with Joseph that he put him in charge of all the land of Egypt. Joseph was now second in command, with only Pharaoh greater than he. Joseph collected the grain from the land of Egypt during the next 7 years. When the famine struck Egypt, Pharaoh sent the people to Joseph and they were able to buy grain so they could eat and not die. Joseph also sold grain to people from other countries because the famine was great everywhere. Object Lesson: Supplies Needed: • A pitcher • Several lemons, cut in half • Sugar • Water • Stirring spoon • Cups Directions: 1. Share the saying with the children, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” Ask the children what they thing that saying means. 2. As you squeeze lemons into the pitcher, talk to the children about how lemons are sour and if you bit into one it would make your lips pucker. But, if you squeeze the lemons and add water and sugar (add those ingredients as you talk), then you get something that is pretty good, lemonade! 3. Explain to the children that sometimes life is like that. Sometimes things do not go our way, or bad things could happen to us. That could make us angry and bitter, like a lemon. If we have the right attitude, however, we can make the best out of it, like lemonade! 4. You can now give each child a cup of lemonade, or save the drink until snack time. Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Jesus Connection: The life of Joseph continues to give us glimpse of how God wanted to use his only Son, Jesus to be the savior of the world. Just as Joseph was taken from his lowly position (a man in prison) and raised to be the right hand man of the king of Egypt, Jesus was also raised up from the lowest place (death) and placed at the right hand of God. Directions: 1. Divide the children into two teams. 2. One child from one team comes to the board and draws a word from the story. (Either have the words written on pieces of paper or whisper it in their ears.) As the child draw, his/her team can guess the word. Give them one minute. If this team guesses the word correctly, they get a point. 3. At the end of the time limit, if the drawing child’s team has not correctly guessed, the opposing team has one chance to guess the word and steal the point. 4. The team with the most points at the end of the games wins. Crafts Egyptian Headdress Supplies Needed: • Egyptian Headdress template • Scissors • Glue • Tape • Colors • Paper strips Directions: 1. Give each child a headdress template. Color and cut out the template 2. Create a head band with strips of paper. 3. Glue the headdress to the band. 4. Homemade Matzo For Passover
Alef Beis unit Alef beis in salt! We placed Montessori alef beis letter boards that the children can feel with their finger and try to create it in the salt. Salt was a great way to draw and practice since just by giving it a shake it 'cleaned the slate'. Levi Yitzchak figuring how much space he needed to create the whole Lamed letter in his salt. It was also a fun place to just create the picture they wanted! Alef beis play dough Alef beis letters were hiding under the shaving cream! It feels so good! Lilah found her letter tes! Alef Beis bingo Bingo was a great way to practice recognizing our Hebrew letters, taking turns and using fine motor skills trying to get the small pieces on the right letter!! Menucha helping Dovi find the right alef beis letters on the puzzle! Alef beis and clean up! Our learning opportunities are not just during circle time but every chance we get to increase our letter recognition and make sure all types of learners get a change to 'get it'! After clean up, each child receives a sticker to place on their chart. This week each child had to find 'their' letter to receive their clean up sticker. Max was trying super hard to create the letter samach with the different size pieces. Devorah Leah figured out how to make a Kuf! Bridging school and home Chani was so excited that she brought in a letter Tes card from home. She wanted to find the matching letter on the chart. She kept on noticing throughout the class 'her' letter Tes! Alef Beis art For those who love art we placed paint and letters all over the table to decorate. Our art center was a great way to color and talk about the letters. In the afternoons, Morah Michaela will be focusing on each letter and making sure our four year olds recognize and know the letters of the Alef beis! Happiest month of the year, Adar! In honor of Rosh Chodesh Adar we had a Jolly Jumps! Just getting INTO the jolly jumps was great gross motor practice! The Joy! Waiting patiently on line while balancing on the jolly jumps takes a lot of skill ;) Elizabeth needed some assistance getting up the ladder. It was so sweet to watch her friends trying so hard to get her up!

Between the three feasts of YHWH that happen in the springtime, and the three that occur in the fall, stands Shavuot. While lots of attention is given to Passover and Sukkot, the Feast of Weeks can feel a bit neglected to me. This is too bad, since, like the center of the menorah, this is not less significant because it stands slightly further apart than the others. On the contrary, celebrating the giving of the Torah and the Ruach Hakodesh should be a rich time for us all. How do we make it a special time when there is so little help from the outside world? Some items for Passover make their way into grocery stores, and the fall feasts have many traditions in themselves. But search 'Shavuot' in a Judaica shopping site, and nary a return will you get. I don't get that, because this is a set apart time. So I'm sharing with you a few ideas to make your Shavuot celebration special this year. Here are a few things to try: Chamomile Honeycomb Ice Cream from Snixy Kitchen Have you ever made candy honeycomb? There is nothing like it! Rose and Pink Peppercorn Chevre with Honey from The House That Lars Built "Like honey and milk the Torah lies under your tongue." This passage in Song of Songs is largely the reason we associate Shavuot with dairy treats and honey. Bake Challah Bread from Smitten Kitchen Shavuot requires two loaves of bread in Scripture. Find a good bread recipe or two to try ahead of time to serve on Shavuot. Challah is traditional but you can try any kind. Fig and Cheddar Grilled Cheese from A House in the Hills Shavuot is a no work day so choose foods that you can prepare ahead of time or are extremely simple to make like grilled cheese. Frozen Yogurt Bon Bons from Sugar & Cloth This would be easy to make healthy by using natural food coloring and using chopped dried fruit instead of sprinkles. 10 Commandments Cupcake Toppers from Chai and Home ALL THE HEART EYES for this idea! DIY Stylish Tzedekah Boxes from Chai and Home In Scripture giving was a time of joyous celebration, not a begrudged obligation. Making a pretty tzedekah box can help restore that joy. Homemade 10 Commandments Memory Game from The Climbing Tree The ten commandments (along with the rest of the Torah) were given at Shavuot so this would be a perfect way to teach children YHWH's word. I'm sure the adults would benefit too! Host a Torah Study We talked last week about having an all-night Torah study. We need to believe and act like the Word of YHWH is the point. It is limitlessly valuable and worth celebrating in and of itself. Get Immersed Since the Ruach HaKodesh fell baptizing the believers, getting mikvahed or immersed in living water would be a very appropriate Shavuot activity. Chag sameach!
