While searching for info on Peyote stitch, I run into the FAST method on this site: http://wildsallyroad.blogspot.com/2011/09/fast-f-s-t-peyote.html. I was intrigued and tried it. This alternate method can be used for even or odd count peyote. It is shown here with an odd-count. Someone with much more experience with Peyote than I have, nicknamed it the FAST and FRUSTRATING method as whatever time might be saved is quickly lost if any mistakes are made along the way as undoing is time consuming. When I read her email, I laughed so hard, as I had the same experience. I have already nicknamed this method the Double F method… As to time saving I don't know, I have not timed it yet. So far, I am a bit lukewarm about this method, mostly because it does not have the peaceful rhythm of regular Peyote… picking up a bead, catching a bead, picking up a bead and catching one… The rhythm becomes a meditation. Regardless this method has merit, but especially for odd-count peyote as it bypasses the odd-count turnaround. Myself, I prefer the 2 Needle Method for Odd-Count Peyote, but you can mix the 2 methods within the same sleeve project and find out which way is best for you. Do the first 4 rows Start using either the traditional method or the 2 needle start. 2 needles are used for this method, so you might as well start with the 2 needles. > Peyote Stitch - 2 Needle Start. Then add 1 row (4th Row, 3 rows were made at once with the start). 1. Place a mini-clamp on one thread end. 2. Insert 6 Delicas Size 10, 3 Seed Beads Size 11, and 6 Delicas Size10. 3. With the Needle #2, go through the first bead on right. This is actually the last bead you threaded on Needle/Thread #1 4. Place the mini-clamp on Thread #1, right at bead. Catch the 2nd bead on left side, that's the protruding bead. Then go through the 3rd bead on right side and pull the thread. The two beads are positioned diagonally from each other. See the angle of the needle. 5. Repeat step 4, catching the next protruding beads on left side, and go through to the right, skipping the next bead and catching the one after that. 6. Continue. 7. Here are the beads of Row 5 & 6 all added in. This method adds 2 rows at once. Peyote Stitch rows are counted in a diagonal, or zig-zag fashion. 8. Remove the mini-clamp and adjust the tension. Here the same sequence started for row 7 & 8 9. Insert 6 Delicas 10s, 3 Seed Beads 11s, and 6 Delicas 10s. 10. With the Needle #2, go through the first bead on right. This is actually the last bead you threaded on Needle #1 11. Place the mini-clamp on Thread/Needle #1, right at bead. 12. Catch the next 2 beads. Continue integrating the 2 sides by catching 1 bead on each side, and skipping 1 in between. Once the rectangle is finished it can be joined into a tube by zipping the 2 sides together. See the other tutorials for the peyote sleeves listed below for instruction on finishing. This sleeve was done with 0.06 WildFire in Camouflage Green. The Miyuki bead mix is Green Patina with Delicas Size 10 and Duracoat Gold Seed bead Size 11. This is my final post for the Peyote Sleeves, Yay. Look for an upcoming review on Beading Thread. Otherwise, at least for the time being… I am switching back to other projects next. At shows I often demo braid samples on Kumihimo disks. Lately one of the finished braided sample turned into a bracelet has attracted lots of attention with many asking for a kit. Voilà, a new kit is born. Well, not so fast, it took a bit more experimenting, to iron all the wrinkles out of the process and several test bracelets later a final version was done. It is better than the original bracelet in my opinion. So yes you can get there without all my experimenting and get a great result on the first try. That's the beauty of a kit, you get all the materials in one spot and bypass the trial and errors. -> Kits Bead, Cord & Clasp Pack The cords in the Bead, Cord & Clasp Packs are pre-cut and ready to be inserted in the slots in the kumihimo disk for your convenience. All of this will make this project easy even if it is your first kumihimo project. This kumihimo bracelet is an original rendition of a kumihimo done with Long Magatama beads from Miyuki. These beads have been often associated with beaded kumihimo. So what's original about this one? The C-Lon Bead Cord Tex 400 braid can be peaked in between the Long Magatamas, giving the beads a fabulous color background. A central core is used, so the bracelet will remain the same length for the lifetime of the bracelet. This project comes in many colors - Bracelet can be stacked or worn in combination with other types of bracelets. With the Bead, Cord & Clasp Pack you get the complimentary PDF instructions sent by email. The manual is 12 pages long with over 30 large pictures. It is a step by step instruction with pictures like the ones below showing each step. It includes instructions on how to set up your cords on the K-Disk, how to load the Long Magatamas, how to braid, how to braid with beads, how to remove your project from the K-Disk, and how to prepare the ends for the clasp and how to finish the project. It has a what if? section, plus the standard women's bracelet length and how to care for the bracelet. Plus it has the braiding mantras… whatever else would you need, right. Left Up Right Down And Turn That's the Kumihimo Mantra! Tool Bags designed for this project are also available. They include: a Mini K-Disk, 8 EZ-Bobs, a Weighted EZ-Bob, a Mini-Clamp, and a Big Eye Needle. The PDF manual is available by itself if you already have all the material and tools on hand. These bags makes it easy for you to take your project on the go, then you can braid in the car, on a plane, on the beach or watching for your favorite TV show. Watch out it is addictive - and hey you can make gifts and a bracelet in every color available! Occasionally I step out of my comfort zone, technically speaking… Away from techniques I am familiar with to meander into new territories. That is exactly what happened after releasing a new kumihimo bracelet kit using a magnetic clasp. Originally I designed the bracelet with a sterling silver clasp, but it added too much to the cost of the kit… So to keep the price of the kit low, I went with the magnetic clasp. Then... Several of my customers told me of having problems with the gold finish getting removed due to their skin types. They planned on spraying a lacquer finish… Others including myself found the magnetic clasps preferred to attach themselves to various metal objects. Finally after losing a bracelet for several days only to find it under my desk attached to a metal leg and metal set of drawers, I knew I had to do something to improve the bracelet. So after searching for new clasps, I found new European magnetic clasps with strong magnets and advanced designs. These clasps are fabulous but their inside diameters are 10 mm by 7 mm, not the 4 to 6mm inside diameter needed for the bracelets. I look forward to designing new projects with these clasps. So keep posted. Next, I decided to cover the clasps with beads, creating a tubular sleeve that would prevent the magnet from moving sideways. I remembered seeing tubular cylinders used a spacers made with Peyote Stitch at one of the show I attended. So I spent a weekend learning Peyote Stitch, creating rectangles and zipping them into tubes. hey I made my first beaded sleeves for the magnetic clasps. These beaded tubes are inserted right over the clasp, either left loose, so they can be interchanged, or stitched to one side. Since adding the beaded sleeves over the magnetic clasps, I have not lost a single bracelet, and if the metal reacts to my skin, the bead sleeve will act as a barrier. Hey - Problems solved! New designs or design improvements sometimes come in unexpected ways… And Peyote Stitch is easy to learn and very addictive. So try it. Over the few next few posts or so, I will go over what's involved in making these Peyote Stitch Beaded Sleeves, show you a few versions of the Peyote Sleeve, show several methods of starting the peyote stitch and of doing the rows, and talk a bit about the history of Peyote Stitch and the origin of its name. Braid shown coming out of the Disk A while ago I noticed interest in kumihimo is often divided between fiber lovers and bead enthusiasts. Most of my customers when asking me questions about the best cord to use for their kumihimo first express their area of interest. Either it is all fiber, or all beads. I happen to love both so I went searching for ways to bring both into focus. Braid made with C-Lon Fine Weight Bead Cord One of my first trial in this direction was a small braid done with C-Lon Fine Weight Bead Cord Tex 135 and Miyuki Size 11 Seed Beads. I used a Mini Kumihimo Beadsmith Disk, 4.5 inch in diameter and Small EZ-Bobs to hold the cord and beads. Gold was the only cord color chosen for the standard 8 strand round braid. The bead mix was added at random. The beads were added on all 8 cords at random. The uniform color brings out the braid structure. A close up of the braid shows the segments with and without beads. The braid is 2mm in diameter. The look is delicate. The plan is to make a bracelet, but as I only braid this sample as a demo, it is slow going as I have a number of braiding demos to choose from at shows. I will post a picture when it gets finished! Another of my show samples is this 12 strand braid made with C-Lon Bead Cord. I also chose a uniform color scheme for this braid, Bronze, and Miuyki Duracoat Size 6 Beads. This sample braid shows some irregularity in the second segment. I will need to trouble shoot to se what exactly happened. I often braid at show on these sample pieces while talking to customers... so anything is possible. I may have to start all over, we will see. 12 Strand Braid with C-Lon Bead Cord The 12 strand braid with the standard size of C-lon Bead Cord has about a 3mm diameter, so about the same diameter as an 8 strand round braid with C-Lon Bead Cord Tex 400. An 8 strand round braid done with the standard C-Lon Bead Cord measures about 2.5mm depending on tension. 12 strand and 16 strand round braids are set on the disk the same way as 8-strand braid, but place more cords on the disk and then braid counterclockwise each set of braids in sequence. Set up for 12 strand braid My next sample was made using knitted hand dyed rayon ribbon and Miyuki Size 6 beads added in sections. The sample was finished into a bracelet and a neckpiece. I wear them sometimes, and occasionally wear the necklace as a multiple pass bracelet. Sample Braid made with Variegated Hand Dyed Knitted Rayon Ribbon and Beads I fell in love with this knitted rayon ribbon. It braids beautifully. The hand dyed color are gorgeous and once it is braided it is soft against the skin and also protected from accidental damage. Rayon fibers are very thin and can be snagged. So make sure before working with this fiber to make sure all your mails are nicely filed... Variegated Hand Dyed Knitted Rayon Ribbon: Golden Berries, Blue & Tan, Aqua & Bronze, Passion Flowers and Pomegranate So out of these meanderings, I created the Bead Cluster Kit in 5 color ways. Buy the Zarah Top sewing pattern from Fibre Mood. Those gorgeous statement puffed sleeves with handsome long cuffs are sure to turn heads. The designer recommends making this top short and sassy. These bracelets made with a flat braid can be done on a round kumihimo disk or a square plate. The flat braid is easy to learn and the movements of the cords become instinctual quickly. Four variations of this 8-strand flat braid are shown on page 68 in Braids, 250 Patterns from Japan, Peru & Beyond, by Rodrick Owen, but none of the variations have the heart motif shown here. In this tutorial, this braid is done on a round disk, but instructions for the square plate will be forthcoming in a future post. These bracelets can be worn singly or stacked. They are light and comfortable to wear. When stacked the magnetic clasps either attract or repel each other depending on the direction of their magnets, so take advantage of this property to stack them closely. Wear these bracelets triple stacked as shown on the top picture. Tutorial - Step by Step Instructions This is a free tutorial... but it is copyrighted! Step by Step "Cord" refers to an individual cord or a strand - a group of cords is treated as a unit, as in the metallic strand. Set Up the Braid 1. Cut 3 one yard length of Rayon Satin #2 or 2 mm Nylon Satin. Fold in half and insert into the paperclip. 2. Cut the Metallic Cord into 1 yard lengths, keeping them together as a strand. Fold at the center and add to the paperclip. Add mini-clamps at each end or roll the ends into the EZ-Bobs to keep the cords from intermingling. 3. Tie several half hitches 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the paperclip with C-Lon Micro Cord. 4. Pull the paperclip through K-disk, the weighted EZ-Bob, and secure the paperclip with a mini-clamp. 5. Place the cords and strands in the slots on each side of the black dots. The heart pattern is created by placing the metallic strands in the slots above dots #24 and #8. To continue, repeat the Mantra. Turn the disk over often and check the progress of the braid. Tips - Keep your tension even - I prefer mine on the loose side for this braid. - Hold the flat braid on the back end of the disk with your left hand, braid with your right hand. Repeat these steps until you have braided the cord to the desired length. Remove the cords from the disk while holding the braid with your left hand. With 18 inches (45 cm) of C-Lon Micro Cord, tie several half hitches right at the end of the braid. The End Clasps 1. Prepare the part you just finished braiding - Wrap the cord ends in a corkscrew fashion with the Micro Cord. Do it very tightly but keep some space between the wraps. Wrap around 1 inch (2.5 cm). End the wrap with a few half hitches. For the end with the paperclip - Cut the cords first, then wrap the cord ends in a corkscrew fashion. 2. Add a few drops of Poly Zap Superglue over the wrapped parts. Let the glue dry. Cut the ends with the snip or shears leaving 3/8 “ (1 cm) of wrapped cords. Check the fit. Round the braid with pliers if needed. Dab a drop of glue on the end clasp and insert. Let dry. Design Options Peyote Sleeves Add a Peyote Bead Sleeve over the magnetic clasp. Go the tutorials HERE and get the materials HERE. Extra Colors Add an extra color for the center of the braid as shown above. Grey Satin was used for the two satin cords by dot #16. This way the satin color at the center of the braid is different than the color on the sides. Compare Materials 2 mm Nylon Satin: Shown on left. It has a bit more sheen than the Rayon Satin. It is strong and durable and devoid of the annoying little thread that sometimes stick out of the rayon satin. Rayon Nylon Satin #2: Shown at center. Beautiful sheen. Needs to be treated nicely. Wow, almost all the C-Lon Tex 400 Bead Cord colors are here, 100 colors out of 108 are in. The picture above shows all 104 spools of Tex 400. 8 spools are regular C-Lon Bead Cord standing up for the Tex 400 Cord not yet in stock and the 4 neons are not shown - they do not play well with the other colors. We are still waiting for 8 new colors of Tex 400 to arrive, 4 in February and 4 in March. Yippee! The next step once they arrived was to adjust all the jpegs. Often the picture did not match the actual color on the spool, or there was discrepancies between jpegs of different sizes, so I spent time readjusting most the Photoshop files and jpegs of all 108 regular C-Lon, 108 C-Lon Tex 400, 44 C-Lon Fine Weight and 32 C-Lon Micro. 100's of jpeg adjustments later.... They now match the actual spools a bit more, at least on my monitor and preferred browsers, but please keep in mind that monitors and even browsers vary as to how they display colors. Another consideration are dye lots, so occasionally a color drifts a bit. Right now for example Antique Brown in the fine weight size is a bit yellower than in all the other sizes. Occasionally 2 colors drift closer to one another making them difficult to differentiate. But, hey, at least the dye lots are close, unlike Chinese Knotting Cord where often dye lots are so extreme that they create all new colors... but that is a story for another blog. After that I played musical chairs with actual spools trying to find a better way to fit for all the 104 colors in rows of 8 colors. Finally I transferred this reshuffle to the the web. Here are the actual spools of Tex 400 for the first 7+ rows Here is the last 6+ rows of Tex 400 The new arrangement starts with Greys, Black and White and ends with Blues. The old arrangement for the standard C-Lon Bead Cord started with Purples and ended with Black & White and Greys. So yes if you have an old color chart - reprint a new one if you wish. The new color charts are available in a PDF format. –> Print a Color Chart for C-Lon Tex 400 Bead Cord –> Print a Color Chart for C-Lon Bead Cord
