3 Exercises For Orff Body Percussion 1. An easy and fun rhythmic exercise for Orff Body Percussion. 2. Follow up to the first Keep the Beat. Slightly more difficult rhythmic exercise for Orff body percussion with dotted quarter note, eighth note rhythms. 3. Follow up to Keep The Beat 1 and 2. Emphasis is on precision with rests needing care. Each part should follow on to the next in a seamless flow. This exercise can be repeated at faster and faster tempos. On Wednesdays we have a special schedule and with my first and second graders I have been doing a lot of centers and rotations. As explained by a classroom teacher, a Center is an activity or station where students choose to go and choose how long they spend at that place. A Rotation is where all students experience the same things for the same amount of time and rotate through the various activities. Once introduced, these games and activities are perfect to leave for a sub! If you are on a mobile device, scroll all the way to the bottom and click, "View Web Version" and on the right you will see all the posts that are tagged with "Centers" and "Rotations". One of my new favorites is this pop it game with dice. Someone posted this on instagram last year and it has become a new favorite. Use foam dice from Dollar Tree and write your rhythms on all sides. For me, this is a Leveled Game with Level One using quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rest. Level Two adds half note and Level Three adds sixteenth notes and eighth, sixteenth note combinations. On the game itself, sit in front of the TV one night and use a Sharpie to draw quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests on each "pop". I keep the dice, games, and directions in a 2-gallon ziploc bag with my other rotations and centers. Here are the direction cards: Enjoy!

I'm starting to ease into Halloween themed lessons now, and I had a lot of success with this Rhythm Monsters activity today. My first graders have been preparing half notes for a few weeks and this was the first time they saw it and had practice writing it down. For the rhythm monsters lesson, I created this page with 20 different rhythm examples. I'll be honest: the rhythm content really had NOTHING to do with monsters. All I did was put a picture of a monster above each rhythm example and the students were hooked right away. I had each student select four cards and practice clapping/reading their pattern, and then copy it onto their worksheet. I like this activity because the students are being eased into the concept of composition. They are still making aesthetic decisions regarding what order to put their monsters, but without all the stress that comes with having to create rhythms from scratch. Click here to download the entire lesson (includes SmartNotebook file, worksheet, and monster cards) for free!

Well... back to school after spring break.. sort of. I've been out for 3 months, back for 2 weeks just half days and surgery again next Thursday- hopefully a minor one, this time! What a crazy school year! As promised, here are some of the center ideas I've been working on... These are a set of cards you can download, print, cut out and use to work on "musical math" or create a game where students work in groups and time themselves to see how quickly they can figure out the correct answer! Could also be used as a whole class competition; divide class in half and see how quickly students can get the correct answer. Play using "hangman" and see which group wins. Let me know how you use it!
