Here is a stunning very rare early vintage original autographed 4" by 6" photo of English singer, dancer and actress Jessie Matthews (1907-1981), from her prime in the 1930s, dated 1936 on the reverse. Jessie Matthews started out in the chorus line, working her way up to starring roles in stage musicals of the 1920s and 1930s. Irving Berlin and Rodgers and Hart wrote songs for her, including the latter's hit "My Heart Stood Still." She starred in both the stage and film versions of Evergreen, one of the first British musicals to be a big hit in the US. Her grace as a dancer earned the sobriquet "the female Fred Astaire," efforts to pair them on screen ran afoul of studio rivalries. Her career was badly damaged by affairs and contentious divorces headlined in the tabloid press, but she made a comeback as a musical star of British radio in the 1950s. Corner and edge creasing. Rare and striking. British postcard by Raphael Tuck & Sons in the Real Photograph Series, nr 66-S, no. 138a. Photo: Gaumont-British. Saucer-eyed, long-legged Jessie Matthews (1907-1981) was a gamine, graceful dancer, with a sweet, pure-toned singing voice, and waif-like sex appeal, who embodied 1930’s style. For most of the decade, she was the most popular musical star in England, and ranked on a par with Fred Astaire, Ruby Keeler, and Ginger Rogers. She was a favourite of Irving Berlin and Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart, all of whom gave her some of their very best work. Her personal life was blighted by relationship breakdowns and her struggles against ill-health and insecurity.
