I can honestly say I have tried homework in kindergarten year after year. I have found it either doesn't get completed, gets lost, or is forgotten on the bus or at home. I would often get a phone call at home from parents not knowing what to expect. It just didn't work (for me). I went a few years just accepting that it was lost or incomplete. I then went through a time where I just did not send home homework. Well, now I have changed. I discovered homework that actually works! It is differentiated, organized, and self-paced. And... I LOVE IT! I call it "Skills Pouch". That is all it is. Students came to school on the first day with a supply or pencil pouch. I use them as student homework pouches. They are reasonably priced and can be found just about anywhere. Then, I purchase book rings. I prefer the 2 inch book rings, but any size will work. I begin the school year in August (on the first day of school) by putting letters on the ring. I started on the first day of school so that it WAS the expectation that students have homework. When students master the uppercase letters, they move on to lowercase, sounds, color words and number words. Then, I move students on to sight words. I print them on cardstock. I am including a blank template for you to use. Click here for the PowerPoint template. Click here for the Keynote template. After students have mastered the letters and words, they move onto Deanna Jump and Stephanie Stewart's Sight Words that Stick Fluency Phrases. If a student masters ALL letters, words, kindergarten fluency sentences, and first & second grade sentences, I advance them on to Jen Jones's Fluency Passages. I DO have two students already on these passages this year and a few more that will get there before spring break. (so exciting) After Christmas break, students have two rings in their skill pouches. One is the reading skill they have been working and progressing on. The new one added is the math fact ring. I use my Mastering Math Fact Fluency Pack. Students have been taking home facts on their ring in their skills pouch. When they pass the set of facts, I add to the ring. Then, the next time I assess the student they must read all of the facts on the ring to move on. One thing I must say that I LOVE about the skills pouches is they are personal. I want them to be personal. Students have their parents write me a hand-written note. I have had some notes on napkins, scrap paper, or even the back of a receipt. They say, "Evan is ready to test!" or "Elsa has practiced and wants to be tested." or "Leevi is excited for his math facts test." They are not fancy notes... instead they are personal. And I truly believe the personal connections are what education is missing. So, that's it folks... Homework I LOVE!! When I assess students it is personal. I am hearing them read. I am spending one-on-one time with that child to see how far he or she has come. It is differentiated, organized, self-paced and most of all, personal. Endless Possibilities,

What is Marungko Approach? Marungko Approach was first introduced in a public elementary school in Marungko, Angat, Bulacan, devised by Nooraihan Ali and Josefina Urbano. According to Nooraihan and Urbano, the method used is called "phono syllabic“ which is teaching of correct single sounds and the blending of sounds into syllables and words. Note that the mastery of letter sounds is very important in this approach. How to use Marungko? 1.The first 5 lessons are as follows: m, s, a , i, o Teach each sound and form until mastery before a new sound is introduced: a) Ask a question to which the response will elicit the target sound. You can use pictures of words beginning with m, s, a etc. depending on the current lesson. b) Show the target letter and tell the children to sound it again as they look at the letter. c) Show them how to write it. Ask them to write it, with the fingers in the air, on their palm, on their desks, and on paper as they give the sound. e) Mastery means they know the sound and the form of the target letter. They can give the sound and write the symbol. 2. After the first 3 sounds have been mastered, these can be combined to form words, phrases or sentences. Start blending of sounds. Every new sound is introduced with previous sounds already learned and in various combinations into words. Start blending of sounds. 3. Introduce function words that cannot be taught through the phono syllabic method as whole words e.g. ang, ng, mga, ay. 4. After the first 5 sounds have been mastered, any other sound can be taught in relation to sounds already learned. Suggested sequence is as follows: b, e, u, t, k, l, y, n, g, ng, p, r, d, h, w. Remember to blend only the sounds that were taught and mastered. Unang Hakbang sa Pagbasa Gamit ang Marungko Paalala sa mga magulang na gagamit nito. I have been planning for our Easter / Spring theme that we will start next week, so we did just a random, quick tot school week with no real theme. Just some random ideas I have seen that I wanted to do sometime. Punkin rolled a dice that had d's and b's on it and had to "graph" her rolls by tracing the correct letter and telling me what it was. She still confuses these two letters, so it was good reinforcement for her. She also spelled her word wall words (sight words) using magnetic letters on her magnadoodle. She did this over and over throughout the week. She had fun playing sight word hockey with color words. I got this idea from Making Learning Fun. She had to read me the color word on the "puck" before she could "shoot" it into the goal. We worked on this CVC word activity together. She did really well. I liked how the middle box was red, so she knew she needed to listen for / find a red letter "sticky vowel." I printed these pages from Have Fun Teaching. Punkin hunted for letter tiles in her rainbow rice and then placed them on her color word sheet to spell her color words. I forgot to take a picture of her playing, but we made this ring toss and had fun playing it one afternoon. This idea came from Little Learning for Two. And she used her dot markers to make this really neat "tape resist" painting. I put velcro dots on jumbo craft sticks and let Punkin make shapes and letters with them. This great idea came from Tot Treasures. She played Bean Bag Toss to help reinforce counting by tens. I also had her hop along the plates and say / count the numbers as she went. She still spends lots of time building elaborate "castles." SOOO...one day I gave her a whole package of plastic cups, showed her how to stack a few of them, and then she surprised me by making .... THIS! She was so proud! She even knocked it down a few times just so she could rebuild it! It was nice to have kind of a laid back week. Now gearing up for Easter stuff! I am linking up to Tot School and Preschool Corner!
