There are 3 indicators that this trunk is from the 1850s 1) The mushroom shape of the lid indicates it was a Jenny Lind style that was popular in the 1850shttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_Lind 2) The trunk is covered in leather which was typical for that era (and now leather trunks of that era are hard to find) 3) The large brass tacks were added to trunk designs in the late 1850s to remind men of the gold to be had in the gold rush ("49ers"). As you can see from the photos, there are small imperfections in the leather not surprising for something nearly 170 years old. The straps are original but the buckles were added in restoration (originals long gone) but the straps dont buckle perfectly. Original to the trunk: Leather exterior, steel straps, 34 large brass tacks (10 replica tacks are used to affix the buckles and the straps on the back), wood slats on bottom, wood tray. The lock on the bottom front of the trunk is original and beautiful but the top mechanism is long gone and there is no key. New in restoration: leather side handles, above mentioned tacks, fabric lining. Most trunks of the 19th century were lined with paper, so we do take some artistic license but the fabric is likely more sturdy than the paper (which was glued on with wet flour). This trunk is 23.5 inches wide, 14 inches deep and 13 inches high and weighs 22 pounds 2 oz. We normally choose nearly destroyed trunks to return to beauty and strength, but this one was not a mess like most of ours which was great, it is so beautiful, we would don't have wanted it to risk being destroyed.
