Trolling around the Internet last night, I happened upon a tutorial for a car litter bag. We normally keep a Wal-Mart bag on the floor of the back seat for that purpose, but that looks messy and is always in the way if we have more than one person in the back seat. The litter bag tutorial I found used brightly-patterned cotton fabric and had a pocket sewn on the front for tissues, or anything else you wanted to carry. I looked at my stash and saw an old pair of my wife's jeans, which I had already hacked up for another project, but they still had one leg, including the rear pocket intact. I figured using an already-made pocket would surely be easier than constructing a new pocket, so I decided to design my litter bag around that pocket. Here's what I did: STEP 1: I pieced together enough jeans material to make a 12"x24" rectangle. Folded in half, that will make an 11"x11" bag. That may be smaller or larger than you want, but it seemed like a good size for us. STEP 2: I salvaged about two feet of waistband from the front of the jeans, saving the button and the buttonhole. I just hacked them off, you may want to unsew the lower half, remove the excess fabric, and sew the waistband back together, this was a prototype, so I didn't take the time. STEP 3: I folded the rectangle in half and sewed up the sides from the inside. STEP 4: I hemmed around the opening. STEP 5: I attached the two pieces of waistband to the backside of the bag to be used as hanging straps. FINAL: The denim litter bag roughly matches the dark blue exterior of our car and keeps the trash off the floor. The pocket could be used to hold a small pack of tissues, a pen and note paper, MP3 player, Gameboy, or ???Because this was a prototype and I wanted to finish in a hurry, I didn't measure carefully or do any pressing. I'm sure you could produce a much better looking product. To keep this on topic, I used my new Singer 603E for this entire project and it had no problems sewing through multiple layers of denim with a universal needle. I picked this beauty up in a local thrift shop last week. It came in a cabinet with drawers full of manual, attachments, cams, notions, and about a half-ton of buttons. The price - $30! Manufactured in 1963/1964, I consider the 600, 603 and 603E to be the last of the "good" Singers, after that, Singer began putting plastic gears in the innards and quality went quickly downhill. Ed

Last Friday I purchased a couple pairs of jeans from a neighbor's yard sale. When I got home I threw them in the washer and then today I tried them on, to find that one pair was made with those horrible low waists that the young people are wearing. I prefer to feel secure in the fact that my pants are not falling off of my bottom. Then I remembered the cute water bottle purses that I saw in a gift shop in Florida. There was my answer . . . so I spent this afternoon making these to give to my little granddaughters. ************* I paid $2 for the jeans. With one leg I got the fabric for both bags. Then I cut the pockets out to re-use, leaving a little extra fabric so that I could sew them onto my bags without going through the thickest part of the pocket and to avoid the rivet. ************* I sewed the pocket on using the existing seam as my center. ************* Next I embellished, knowing it would be easier to do this before putting the bag together. If you do this project I would suggest also hemming the top of the bag at this point. I found this out the hard way. ************* Here's what I'm talking about. The circumference of these bags is quite small (just a little bit bigger than whatever bottled water you use). My bag was a tight fit over the small arm on my machine. On the second bag, I hemmed it before closing the side and bottom and it was easy-pleasey. ************* I used the other leg to cut my shoulder straps. I folded my fabric in quarters to make a strong strap. That is of course up to you. You could use something else for the straps and actually have enough fabric for 4 bags. ************* If you notice the top of my straps . . . I just tied them. This way the user can adjust the straps to their height. They can always be cut if too long. ************* We all know how important it is to drink lots of water and keep hydrated. Think about making one of these for taking to the flea market. Put your money & cell phone in the pocket and have your hands free for shopping. ************* Have a wonderful week & Remember drink lots of water. "Here's to your health!" Connie

Second - The instructions with photos in 20 pages. You do not need to print those, just follow on screen. Plus there is a video to help through the tricky bits. All files are in English and full of photographs. Make your own very simple but stylish and comfortable everyday bag. The instructions and printable pattern are very simple and you can make this slouchy soft bag with almost any other fabric, but denim is always on trend! And using old jeans helps our Mother Nature in a very big way! The coolest thing about this bag is that it can be made using only one pair of jeans! The fun of this project is to keep that cool denim look: stonewashed effect, rips, seams and hems. Some jeans are so great-looking (but don’t fit for instance), then it’s really fun to turn them into a bag, something that you can still use and enjoy! The tutorial is full of photos and detailed step by step instructions. I'd rate the difficulty level as medium. It's not too complicated, but you do need some sewing experience. A good sewing project for denim lovers and eco thinkers. Size of the finished bag: Width when flat 16" (41 cm) Height when flat from the opening to the bottom 15" (38 cm) Handle drop appx 11" (28 cm) Total height appx 25" (64cm) It becomes smaller once filled and draped down, as there is depth added then. I'd call it medium or slightly larger then medium. The size of the jeans should be Large and preferably straight legs. But due to so many shapes and leg widths, I’d rather give you the following measurements. Those are minimum for the pattern to fit. The larger — the better and easier to work with :) Leg length measuring from bottom hem to the bum pocket — minimum 72cm (28”). Leg width just below the knee — minimum 23cm (9”). You might wish to have a magnet clasp for this bag, but it is optional. You will also need some fabric for the lining. You will need two pieces of 50x75cm, all details will be described in the tutorial. Any questions are welcome! Thank you for supporting small businesses!
