La fresque animalière de ce peintre japonais du XVIIIe siècle, composée de 30 rouleaux, est présentée dans son intégralité pour la première fois en Europe, au Petit Palais.
Superbes fleurs de lys aux couleurs flamboyantes mises en valeur par le fond beige de forme circulaire. Jakuchu Ito, peintre renommé du XVIIIe siècle réalisa de nombreuses peintures circulaires représentant des plantes et des fleurs de différentes espèces destinées au plafond à caisson de la chapelle votive dédiée à Kannon. On peut toujours voir aujourd'hui, les cent soixante huit panneaux au plafond de la salle principale du Shingyoji. Un siècle plus tard, en 1890, un éditeur réalisa la première édition d'estampes à partir des peintures de Jakuchu, en quatre albums qui reprenaient les dessins de fleurs et de plantes reproduits à échelle réduite. Rooster Itō Jakuchū (1716-1800)
若冲は大岡春卜に師事したとされる。最初、春教とも号した。春卜は大阪で活躍した狩野派の絵師で、『画巧潜覧』『画本手鑑』『和漢名画苑』などの図譜を享保年間前後に出版している。が、現在残る若冲の作品に狩野派の痕跡を探すのは難しい。春卜と会ったことはあるだろうが手ほどきを受けたというよりは、おそらく版本による構図の勉強をしたという程度のことではなかろうか。「師事」というよりは「私淑」に近い関係だったと思われる。 むしろ若冲が影響を受けたのは、相国寺の大典顕常であった。若冲という号も大典が与えた。『老子』の「大盈は沖しきが若きも其の用は窮らず」に拠っている。「真に充溢しているものは、内は空虚に見えようが、その働きが尽きることはない」という意。「充溢」とは「働きそのもの」であるという古い中国の教えは、儒教的な倫理観が支配的だった当時、非常にアヴァンギャルドな思想であったと思われる。 若冲は写生をよくしながら写実だけにものめりこまず、自身の幻想を描きこんだ。たとえば、こんな鶏、現実にはいやしない。 伊藤若冲「紫陽花双鶏図」 ああ、この絵。ほんとうに素晴らしい絵だ。まさに生命の躍動。 九州国立博物館の『プライスコレクション・若冲と江戸絵画』では、入ると同時にこの絵がまっさきに目につくようにかけられている。しかも展示されているのは真っ赤な壁紙の貼られたショウケース。毎度ながら国立博物館の憎い演出には頭が下がる。 他の軸よりも高くかけられているので、お客さんは見上げるような形でこの絵に対することになる。軸の下方に二羽の鶏がいて、すさまじい形相で争っている。この緊張感あふれる一瞬に、ぼくらはもっとも良いポジションで接することが出来る。 子どもがこの絵を見上げながら、鶏冠の部分が小さな赤い点々で描かれているのを発見して驚いていた。そう、この絵には何度観ても驚きがある。また同時に畏敬の念も湧き上がってくる。 伊藤若冲「紫陽花双鶏図」部分 この二羽の鶏の目つき。こんな目を鶏は生理的にすることが出来ない。にもかかわらず、写生に明け暮れた若冲はそれを知っているにもかかわらず、あくまで擬人的に表現する。そこに在る「闘争」という〈働きの充溢〉をこのように表現したのだ。 よく見ると鶏の羽はずいぶんデフォルメされている。首の周りの「松毬のような」(@国立博物館のコメント)飾り羽は現実の鶏には存在しない。しかし若冲はあえて書き加えた。しかも念を入れた描き込みようで。そうだ、この羽の描写の素晴らしさはどうだろう。どのようにして若冲はこんな技巧に達しえたのか。透明感すら感じられる輝く羽。自然はこんなにも美しい。 若冲は鶏をよく描いた。庭先に鶏を放ち、よく観察し、写生した。彼の描いた鶏の絵は、自然の働きを写したものであると同時に彼の幻想を写したものである。鶏に仮託しながら、彼の〈綺想〉は花開いていった。 当時の上方には、世界に類を見ない一種の〈綺想主義(concettismo)〉が流行していた。若冲をはじめ蕭白や芦雪もこの流行のもとで創作活動を行っていたわけだが、上方の〈綺想主義〉の実体はまだ十分に解明できているとは思えない(というよりも、そういう視点での日本美術についてまとまった研究成果があるのか、ぼくは知らない。少なくとも辻惟雄先生もそこまで踏み込んではいない。是非、高山宏先生あたりに筆のすさびにでも書いてほしい)。 ぼく個人としては〈綺想〉の定義を、「写実と幻想の混濁した表現形式」としてみたいのだけれども、そのもっとも優れた表現が若冲の鶏の絵ではないかとひそかに考えている。 伊藤若冲「紫陽花双鶏図」部分 この紫陽花の表現を見よ。 これまで筋目描で描いてきた紫陽花を、絹本に岩絵具で描く際も筋目描風に描いてしまう。写実と幻想はここで入り乱れてしまう。画面の中心には思いっきり写実的でマンガチックで精密に描かれた二羽の鶏、その背景にはなんとも抽象的で微笑ましい造り物めいた花と幹。まさに〈綺想〉の表現だと思う。 当時の上方には、博物学的な趣味嗜好を持った畸人(好事家)たちが多くいた。中国から流れ込んでくる本草学の諸知識(李時珍の『本草綱目』に代表される)は、彼ら畸人たちの蒐集癖に拍車をかけた。文人や画家たちはそういった畸人たちと交わりながら、心の中に幻想を膨らませていったに違いない。 伊藤若冲「旭日雄鶏図」 朝日に向かって「ときの声」をあげる雄鶏の勇姿。まっすぐと前を見据え、片足を軽く上げ、尾羽は軽やかに踊るよう。朝日のまわりには薄く霞がかかっているようで、朝の静けさがよく伝わってくる。 「丹青活手妙通神(丹青活手の妙、神に通ず)」。 佐賀に生まれ、上方で煎茶道を広めた高遊外売茶翁が若冲に送ったことばだ。ここでいう「神」はもちろん道荘的な意味でとらえなくてはならないだろう。この絵もまた、自然と若冲の心の内の〈働き〉(すなわち「神」)を写したものなのだ。 『プライスコレクション・若冲と江戸絵画』@九州国立博物館
2016年生誕300年を迎えた伊藤若冲(1716-1800)展のトリを飾る特集展示が京都国立博物館で開催中です。展示期間は12/13-1/15、私は師走の混雑を避け一昨日行ってきました。各地で開催された展示会で展示されない作品も多く、28作品と少ないですが見応えある内容でした。新年の門松が出迎えてくれます。若冲展は平成知新館二階です。画集を買い求めましたのでいくつか紹介します。果蔬涅槃図釈迦の入滅を描く涅槃図を果蔬(野菜と果物)で表現した大作です。青物問屋の主人として日々親しく接した果蔬60種以上で描いています。百犬図画面一面犬づくしの作品です。子犬は59匹です。禅に傾倒した若冲は、中央の犬白いがくわえる葉とじゃれつく縄が箒を暗示し、子犬と箒はそれぞれ趙州禅師と寒山を表徴しています。大根に鶏図近年見出ださ...伊藤若冲京都国立博物館
