On the afternoon of October 24, 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius violently erupted, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae under feet of ash. Pompeii remained lost and undisturbed until its rediscovery in 1748. Today it is one of the best preserved Roman towns, and a popular tourist destination. The inlay in this ring is composed of pumice ash from Mount Vesuvius and ancient Roman terracotta pottery from the surrounding area mixed with pigment, glow powder and a binding agent, to create a beautiful and unique appearance. Rings are available in half sizes from 6-14. Other sizes may be available on a custom basis. Please contact me directly to inquire about a different size, or other customizations (inlay color, glow color, etc). Ring pictured is cobalt chrome. Rings are available in titanium, cobalt chrome, black ceramic, tungsten carbide, carbon fiber, and Damascus stainless steel. We occasionally have access to other options as well, such as sterling silver and other metals. Please feel free to contact us for custom options. Please see other rings in our shop for examples of the various metals available. Titanium: Very light weight and durable. Gunmetal color. Moderately scratch resistant. Cobalt Chrome: Brilliant color, comparable to platinum or white gold. Highly scratch, chip, and corrosion-resistant. Tungsten Carbide: Dense and heavy. Virtually unscratchable. Gunmetal colored. Extremely hard, but can chip or break if shocked. Ceramic (Titanium Carbide): Lightweight and durable. Highly scratch resistant. Will retain its dark black color forever. Like tungsten, ceramic rings can be chipped or broken under extreme conditions. Carbon fiber: Ultra light, ultra strong composite material used in high end sports cars, aircraft and aerospace applications. Carbon fiber has a visual and tactile texture to it due to its manufacturing process, which involves compressing layers of woven carbon fibers and resin. While carbon fiber is very strong, it scratches easier then the metal and ceramic cores, but small scratches don't stand out on it. Stainless Damascus steel: Beautiful and complex patterning and texture make this an eye-catching choice. Stainless steel is strong and tarnish resistant, but is more susceptible to scratching than some other options. Please note, due to cost we do not stock these ring cores, and will order your Damascus ring blank when you place your order with us. The craftsman that hand makes them is in Europe, and it typically takes about a week to get the blank in before we can start making your ring. Please note, due to the wide variety of ring metals and sizes we offer, we may not have a ring blank in your chosen material, in your size in stock. Typically, we can have the ring blank in hand in just a few days, but please allow 7-10 days for production and mailing of your ring. We will do our very best to keep you informed of any issues or delays in production of your piece. If you want a ring that differs from the style pictured, we are happy to accommodate. If, for instance, the sample picture has orange inlay and glows orange, but you want yellow inlay that glows green, we will be happy to create a custom listing for you. It lay 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Naples, at the western base of Mount Vesuvius, and was destroyed, together with Pompeii, Torre Annunziata, and Stabiae, by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. Excavations began in the mid-18th century and continue in the 21st century.

If you want to visit ancient ruins and preserved cities in Italy, it comes down to two. Should you visit Herculaneum or Pompeii?
Photos from our tour of Herculaneum; One approaches the site from the modern town of Herculaneum sixty feet above the ancient town. As you walk down the path toward the sea you begin to realize that the site of the ancient Herculaneum is completely underground except for this small excavated section of the town. At the end of the ramp you turn onto a gangway that leads to an ancient street that begins at what was once the edge of the Mediterranean. As you can see many of the buildings are in a state of excellent preservation. Food service shops still have their counter tops built out of chunks of marble atop large storage jars that used to contain nuts, grains, bread and soups. Much of the wooden elements of the buildings are still in place. Some of the window shutters, exterior beams, wine racks and furniture that are still in place were charred by the hot gases of the pyroclastic flows from Mount Vesuvius. The interiors of typical roman homes here are well preserved. The first main room of a house we visited, the Atrium, is two stories high, complete with mosaic tile floors, a pool in the center of the room, Frescos on the walls and sliding cedar entry doors. The opening in the ceiling provided the space with light and ventilation but it also allowed rainwater to pour in and fill the pool, called an impluvium. When the pool filled up it then over flowed into a cistern which provided the family with a store of fresh water. Beyond this first main room is the Tablinum in which the owner conducted business, which looks out to an enclosed garden beyond know as a Peristyle. These Peristyles were usually surrounded by columns supporting porch roofs or Porticos. Traces of the gardens still remain and of course there was typically a decorative pool and fountain. Each of these homes was completely enclosed with solid stone walls and tile roofs. Some of these homes of the wealthy covered entire city blocks or Insula. This kept the household save from intruders. Once the front entry was sealed the house was safe from thieves or rioters in the street. Yet the home still enjoyed gardens, sunlight, flowing fountains, fresh air and blue skies. It was a clever design for urban living in an unstable world. At one point our tour guide showed us a bird bath supported by three carved seahorses. He instructed us to feel the detail in the mouth of one of the seahorses. The roman sculptors were so thorough that they included the shapes of the inside of the roof of sea horses mouths. If we ever get the chance we will go back and spend several days in Herculaneum and Pompeii. Food service counter in a fast food store. Food storage jar in the corner of what was once a house.
