We follow him from the first sentence up through the submission process and ultimately the publication of his book, It Was a Dark and Stormy Night. Midway through the book, the paper stock changes from sunny matte construction paper to a serious semi-gloss when we are presented with Snoopy's novel, a book-within-a-book. Pretty postmodern stuff. The cover illustration is by one Lucy Van Pelt in a style reminiscent of outsider artist Henry Darger. The sparse text reads like a riddle. The jacket flap depicts not the author but a plush doll doppelganger. Is this the author's not-so-subtle comment on the commercialization of his likeness or simply more postmodern shenanigans from Mr. Snoopy? The book shifts gears a final time detailing the post-publication process: dismal reviews and feebly attended book-signings. The whole business ends on a downbeat note. Just like real life. It Was a Dark and Stormy Night is a comedic journey through childhood fears, intended for intermediate elementary students (grades 3-5). It has 28 roles addressing assorted ability levels, with a run time of approximately 40 minutes. Girls are having a sleepover party when the topic turns to their fears: ghosts, the dark, vampires, spiders, zombies, vicious dogs, the thunderstorm that’s crashing outside, and more. Once asleep, a public service announcement allows a rebuttal from the scary things, followed by a somewhat clinical child psychologist addressing coping mechanisms. The inspiration for this play was seeing a kid-friendly method for creating sound effects that simulate a thunderstorm by having a group of children rubbing their hands together, snapping, and clapping (directions included)—it was so realistic, I was determined to work it into a play somehow. I’m using it with my drama club for our end of year presentation, but it would also be appropriate for in-class use, and perfect for Halloween or any time of the year (my club presents in the spring--it honestly didn't occur to me at first that folks might enjoy it as a Halloween play, but of course that works too)! My students are enjoying acting this out as they develop fluency and intonation. I hope yours will too! We have had some extreme weather for San Diego the past week. Hail and rain! I recently discovered the work of Julien Colombier. He makes drawings on black surfaces- paper, canvas, plaster walls. I love his sense of touch. How he manipulates light and dark with shifts in his hand pressure. It's also interesting to see how his vocabulary of images repeats, varies, and evolves as he produces each drawing. One of his drawings was a great fit for the stormy weather we have been experiencing. It's called ZZtop Apocalypse. "Charger" bolts, shading, and perspective? Score. I shared images from Julien's website with each class and discussed his use of light and dark to make things look 3d. We talked about what you have to do to make dark and light values on black paper instead of white paper. (You reverse your usual process- press had for light and soft for dark on black.) I then shared ZZtop. I focused on light and dark, and I also introduced the concept of one point perspective. Julien used it to make the house look like they were lined up on a real street. This was their first lesson in perspective this year. I think this image is a great intro to the concept because it is simple enough for many students to achieve success. I told the students we would be making a drawing together based on this particular image and then I shared a short video of Julien working. The students LOVED the video. Some didn't love the music, but they really enjoyed seeing Julien work. Student engagement in full effect:) We then drew out the lightning image together. I modeled the perspective, lightning bolts, and coloring shapes. The visual vocab of the finished drawings are similar, but the visual variations are very interesting too.

My favorite holiday is quickly approaching. I love Fall and all that comes with the season. (Okay, maybe not the snow...) There are so many fun projects and activities for Halloween. I decided to create a really fun activities packet for my students. I'm excited to see how they enjoy these activities throughout the month of October. Here are some of the activities that can be found in the packet. What's in the Cauldron Activity- Students create a new potion for a witch's brew. They have to list the ingredients, the directions, and the purpose of the potion. 2. Slimy Sally's Disgusting Restaurant Activity- Students help Slimy Sally create a new menu for her restaurant. The grosser the food, the better! 3. Halloween Word Search- Students search for 21 Halloween themed words. 4. Halloween Cryptogram- Students use the secret code to solve the Halloween riddle. 5. Halloween Double Puzzle- Students must first unscramble the 15 Halloween themed words. They then must solve the Halloween riddle at the bottom of the page. A word bank is included! 6. Halloween Drawing Prompt- Students create an illustration using the prompt "Something in the closet was making a strange noise, so I opened the door and saw..." 7. Halloween Word Bank Activity- Students try to create as many words as they can by only using the letters in the saying "Have a Spooky Halloween". 8. Halloween Writing Prompt- Students create a story using the prompt "It was a dark and stormy night when..." 9.
