The Dallas Museum of Art has a wonderful Monet Painting in a beautiful gold frame which inspired me to create this lesson for our Big Art Day which is fast approaching in Texas schools. For our Big Art day this year I have a Theme....Circle Art! Themes are the way to go when organizing events. I love this new lesson that was inspired by one of my favorite artists, and two favorite bloggers: Painted Paper and Cassie Stephen's who also use themes. I ordered the 10 inch cardboard circle rounds for this lesson, the same size Cassie used in her Dot Day Art. School Specialty has various sizes. The kids loved painting on this canvas instead of paper. We read about Monet's garden and look at prints of his masterpieces. I even show them some of my pictures that I took when I visited his garden in France. On day one, we painted the pond and the water lily pond on a 10 inch cardboard circle on the white side with Prang tempera paint. We also made some Painted Paper for the water lilies Have you check out the Monet lesson over at Painted Paper? On Day two we read another sweet Monet book that emphasized his love of nature and the reflection of light. We also added a shiny frame with Metallic Playcolor sticks similar to the beautiful DMA Painting. Lovely!! The children created the water lily's from the green paper using oil pastels. No tracers here! The flowers from painted scrap paper with tissue centers. Some had a really hard time with the cutting, but we did it! I know Monet would be so proud of their work! I can't wait to hang them up for our Big Art Day Open House next month! Now on display!

Today is the last day to enter my Weekend Wishlist Giveaway for the fabulous Maggie Tote! The winner will be announced tomorrow morning! Let's link up to share what happened in our classrooms this week. Me first! :) In math, we are working on our place value unit. Students practiced writing expanded form by playing "Bull's Eye" using a target and paperclips. They wrote their scores in expanded form (ex. 100+30+2=132). Students are also learning to write numbers in word form. To make sure they are mastering the spelling of these words, we made flashcards and "Mastery Pockets." We'll save these to use for MANY activities this year! Here's how to make a "Mastery Pocket": Step 1: Take a 2-pocket folder. Cut a semi-circle shape ABOVE the inside pockets. Step 2: Cut down the fold along the white semi-circles (in pic above) so it creates two flaps. Fold flaps down. Step 3: Use velcro dots to secure flaps down so that they create pockets that can open and close. I got these Velcro mini-dots that worked PERFECTLY at Wal-Mart in the craft section. Step 4: Print labels that say "Practice" and "Mastered" to go on each pocket. You can download mine here! Voila! Now you have a cheap, easy solution to storing flashcards that students are using to master skills. And, students LOVE being able to move cards from the "practice" pocket to the "mastered" pocket! They also love to decorate them and make them their own. ;) In science, we're still learning about animals. This week we finished up learning about all of the animal classification groups. Students created flipbooks to help them remember the characteristics of the different animal groups. I love using different textures to represent the animals' body coverings! Mammals - fur fabric from a craft store to represent hair/fur Reptiles - onion sack to represent scales Amphibians - wax paper to represent smooth, moist skin Birds - craft feather to represent feathers Fish - onion sack to represent scales Insects - a piece from a hard plastic 3-ringed folder to represent an exoskeleton Inside they wrote examples of animals that would belong in each group and characteristics of that group. (Animal Groups Flipbook from Teacher's Clubhouse) I ended my week by taking one of my SWEET students to Frankie's Fun Park for putt-putt, bowling, and games! She won a date with me from the silent auction at our school's carnival. It was a fun time and a perfect ending to the week! She won over 2,000 tickets and insisted on buying me something with them - a Gamecock Hello Kitty! I'm pretty sure it's going to bring my Cocks good luck tomorrow...maybe I'll take it to the game -ha! Gotta love those sweet students! ;) What happened in your classroom this week?

If you are anything like me you DO NOT enjoy reptiles, especially snakes. Kids on the other hand LOVE them and love to learn about them. Although they are not my favorite they are definitely fascinating. Here is a sneak peek into our week on .... On the first day we learn about the characteristics of a reptile. The week before when we were studying amphibians many children named reptiles as amphibians. This was a great time to clarify the difference. We read our mini book, completed the dig deeper, labeled, sorted, and wrote about them. This all looks like a lot but it goes rather quickly. During this time, I also create charts with the children. Here is an example below. You can see at the bottom we compared the two. On the second day, we read a book that talked more specifically about different reptiles. On this day, we made a can, have, and are chart together. This was our pre-writing for our informative writing on reptiles. Whenever possible, I like to read both fiction and non-fiction together. On the third day, we looked closely at turtles. For whole group guided reading, we read "The Foolish Tortoise" by Eric Carle. We completed recall and text to self activities. Then for whole group writing, I read "All About Turtles" by Jim Arnosky. We used this book to gather our facts for our informative writing. On the fourth day we did something a little different. Our focus was on comparing and contrasting. I researched and made a mini booklet that compares crocodiles and alligators. I learned a lot too about these similar reptiles. We began the lesson by reading the mini booklet. We had our highlighters out and highlighted the key words. After reading and learning about them, I let them work in groups to compare and contrast the two. They love working together. The mini book was a great reference with the the key words highlighted and ready to go. Here is a sample below of what they worked on. Not too camera shy in my room! Finally, we ended the lesson altogether creating a class chart. As a final culminating activity, I put a hands on sort in my science center. I also cut and laminated the cards on this chart so students could sort the cards during our rotations. I like to put things that we have already learned in our science center because this is independent work time. This is when I meet with small groups and I want them to be confident and be able to work on the skills without assistance. On our final day learning about reptiles, we do research. This is by far their favorite day. I copy about 7 packets for each animal. We gather together and I share with them the different animals they can research about. I let them pick what interests them the most, very motivating. Then we split up into our groups and begin. We have a class set of Chrome Books for research help. They work independently and seek help when needed. WARNING: It is a little noisy, but I love it! They are learning, sharing, and interacting in a positive way! Here are a few pictures of us in action. I forgot to mention it gets a bit messy too! When they are done, the results are beautiful. I also made a craft for each animal. When they finish they get to make their animal. They love doing this as well. Here are the different options for reptiles. Snakes~ Turtles~ Chameleons~ Crocodiles~ Aren't they amazing! You can tell I'm a super proud first grade teacher. If you are interested in doing this with your class, Check out my reptile unit. This is one animal group of a HUGE bundle. I hope you enjoyed your sneak peek into our room. Love what you do and do what you love!
This activity addresses symmetry while also providing a cut and paste craft perfect for prompting your creative writers! You’ll receive five pages. 1. Tree frog 2. Alligator 3. Turtle 4. Cobra 5. Iguana *See all animals in PREVIEW. The illustrations on each page are visually divided down the middle, also dividing the names of the animals and the two “fun facts” provided. One side is finished and one side is unfinished. With the help of key “tracer lines” your students will mirror the line drawing to complete the unfinished animal bust. Once drawn and colored, this fun, low maintenance symmetry lesson is a wrap. However, cut the pages in half – join two different animal halves - and you’ve got a whole new set of wacky creatures with “combo” looks, names and fun facts! Simply tape the halves together on the back or glue side by side on a larger piece of construction paper for a colorful frame. Your students will love making their unique creatures and you’ll love how motivated they are to write about them! I am ALL kinds of excited {thanks, Abby} that this week is over! It was way too much fun and filled with every type of celebration imaginable! So much fun that I slept until 12:30 today. Something that I haven’t done since…oh…say…college! However, I didn’t apologize to a single soul because it was so, SO needed! If you can keep up, here is how last week went down! {Warning…there may or may not be 100 pictures in this post!} Although the end of the year is buzzing with excitement, we are still in full learning mode. We just make it as enjoyable as possible so the kiddos don’t actually think that they are learning! Clemson University traveled to our school to pump our kids up about science. They taught our 5th/6th graders at the beginning of the week, and then the 5th and 6th graders took over the teacher role with the youngsters. In a matter of 2 hours, our kiddos completed 10 different science experiments. On Tuesday, it was all about field day…and 12 pies in my face…AND a wrestling match! {Oh My!} We made cute hats {my end of the year gift for the kiddos}. They look so forward to making their hats, plus they are super cheap! I would say it is a win…win! I definitely have some athletes on my hands and field day was going so well… Until…tug of war! We lost! I pulled a muscle…or two! I was sad, but I had to lead by example for my kiddos! Maybe next year! Ha! I am pretty sure that they forgot all about getting creamed in tug of war when they creamed me…literally! They have been working so hard to earn their "Oh Snap” reading points. As we celebrated our final nine weeks, I had 12 {Yes….12} earn enough points to put a pie in my face! They got me good…really good! I guess I will do just about anything to get my kiddos excited about reading! Now this wouldn’t have been so bad if I could have ran straight home to shower! Life would have been grand! Too bad we had our Pups Wrestling Match that very same day and this girl forgot a change of clothes! I will just say that it may be a LONG while before I can enjoy the smell of whipped cream again! Speaking of wrestling match, here are a few pictures. My husband started this program at our school to provide some incentive and motivation to get our boys excited about learning and achievement. Each week, they spend 20 minutes in “man talk” and then they split for wrestling practice. It has been such a great way to hold our boys accountable and let me just say…they are all about some wrestling…and really good at it…kinda scary good! :) Here are a few of my boys in action! Like I said…scary good! I am sure my husband is hoping and praying for these boys to make it to his high school team…ASAP! Finally, on Thursday night, we had our gigantic academic celebration at school. My second grade team decided to go all out in a Magic Tree House themed display. We made it complete with our friends Jack and Annie, a safari jeep, and real animals {including an alligator and albino snake}. We talked this celebration up all week long and had quite the turn out! Our kiddos were so giddy with excitement! They could hardly wait for 5:00 to arrive. It’s amazing what can go up…and come down within 24 hours! Welcome to the Magic Tree House! A few of our animal friends… Our Dino Dig was a hit! Our good friends, Jack and Annie! Takin’ a ride in the safari jeep! The kiddos awesome work displays! {Tip: refrigerator boxes make crazy amazing displays!} Our awesome 2nd grade team! Oh wait…did I mention my husband got a mohawk at our celebration?!? He lost a competition with our kindergarteners! And as if that wasn’t bad enough…they got to dye it pink for field day! He was all about it! Me…not so much! And some how in the mix of all of this craziness, we were able to read and respond one last time to our pen pals! Thanks, Amy Lemons for letting us get to know your sweet loves this year! What a week! If you are still reading up until now…bless. your. heart! This is what I get for only posting once this week! Now I am off to enjoy this 3 day weekend! Then next week, we will be living the ice cream dream! If you need some activities to get you through the next week, I will be posting this to my shop tomorrow! Have a great weekend, sweet friends!
It's been almost a year since I have put out any life-cycle work for Caspar. But after a little of this. He took this book, opened to this page, to school for show and tell. I knew it was time for this and these. The life-cycle cards are from Montessori Print Shop. This one below isn't Montessori with the abstract looking frog, but it is cute, and the other pictures are life like. It looks lovely in a wooden bowl or tray on the shelf. From Mama Roots on Etsy. Last week we had a blast learning about amphibians, their characteristics and incorporating a little fiction on frogs and toads too!
