I'm finally joining the party! I have just been too addicted to my new Christmas present to do anything else! I do plan on posting a new freebie by the end of the weekend, but for now, here are my 11 things in 2011! 11. Favorite movie you watched I read this book for our Book Club this summer and I just loved it. Of course, when the movie came out, I was all about it! It even makes my top 10 best movies! 10. Favorite TV series I know this is going to sound really dumb, but the Walking Dead is definitely my new favorite TV show. Basically, this cop wakes up from a coma and the world has been taken over by zombies. I know it sounds super corny and stupid, but it is such a thrilling drama and of course there is some scandalous business that goes on too! My brother got me hooked on the first season and it was all over after that. I don't EVER miss an episode! The second half of season 2 resumes on February 12! So excited... 9. Favorite restaurantWe have this fabulous restaurant in Greenville called American Grocery. It's expensive and definitely considered fine dining, but they use mostly local meats and produce when they can and it's just DI-VINE! Chef Joe Clarke never disappoints me with his rabbit, hanger steak, duck, or fish and the walls of the place are adorned with artwork of the locals. Love it! 8. Favorite new thing you tried Favorite new thing I've tried is definitely making digital art! This is a VERY recent development but so much fun! I literally was dreaming of the clip art I was going to make last night. I did not sleep very well due to my excitement this morning to get up and create! This was my newest set as of this morning... I'd love for you to go check out my Etsy shop! 7. Favorite gift you received This is a tie, my mom gave me the Bamboo Tablet which I lUVVV! And then my boyfriend bought me this gorgeous ring from Silpada.com! Hopefully, I'll be getting a ring for the other finger in 2012! =) 6. Favorite thing you pinned OMG. I have no idea. I have pinned about a bazillion things. Um. I guess I would say anything to do with fonts, clip art, or digital frames/backgrounds because I use them ALL the time. I am OBsessed. 5. Favorite blog post I would say my Multiplication Tricks Sheet since soooo many people have viewed it and are able to use it. =) Even though I initially had some mistakes in there, (which I fixed), ya'll knew what I meant! I like creating stuff people can really use! 4. Favorite accomplishment My favorite accomplishment was becoming a Promethean Activ Inspire trainer in my district! It pays and it's so much fun to share new tricks with teachers! I felt so honored to be asked! 3. Favorite picture Man...this is tough too! I am torn between these two! The first one is from Bunco! We had an 80's hair band theme. Buuut, I also got to go to Costa Rica this summer and go ziplining! 2. Favorite memory My favorite memory was definitely while I was in Costa Rica. I got to go in a cage full of howler monkeys and hang out with them and even hold one! Meet Chiqui Chiqui! Ain't he cute!? 1. Goal for 2012 I don't normally make goals because I never keep them. But, I would like to cook more at home instead of eating out so much! Maybe I should take a cooking class or two... Well, that's my 11 in 11! Head on over to A Teeny Tiny Teacher's blog to participate!

Beltain/Beltane Festival of Fertility and Union The name originates from the Celtic god, Bel - the 'bright one', and the Gaelic word 'teine' meaning fire, giving the name 'bealttainn', meaning 'bright fire'. This is the beginning of the light half of the year when the Sun begins to set later in the evening . To our ancestors Beltane was the coming of summer and fertility. The fields are sown, the crops are growing, and in the cycle of the farming year, although there is always some work to be done, there is now a little time to relax and enjoy things for a while before the next surge of activity at harvest time. So, it is a time for rejoicing. It is a time for sharing. It is a time for new beginnings - which may well include courtship and marriage, but can also refer to any field of human endeavour. It officially begins at moonrise on May Day Eve, and marks the beginning of the third quarter or second half of the ancient Celtic year. It accompanies the first turning of the herds out to wild pasture. The rituals were held to promote fertility. Animals were transferred from winter pens to summer pastures, and were driven between the Beltane fires to cleanse them of evil spirits and to bring fertility and a good milk yield. The Celts leapt over Beltane fires - for fertility and purification.Contact with the fire was interpreted as symbolic contact with the sun. In early Celtic times, the druids kindled the Beltane fires with specific incantations. Later the Christian church took over the Beltane observances, a service was held in the church, followed by a procession to the fields or hills, where the priest kindled the fire. The rowan branch is hung over the house fire on May Day to preserve the fire itself from bewitchment . This is a holiday of Union both between the Goddess and the God and between man and woman. Handfastings are traditional at this time. It is a time of fertility and harvest, the time for reaping the wealth from the seeds that we have sown. We celebrate sexuality, we celebrate life and the unity which fosters it. The Lord and his Lady, having reached maturity, come together in Perfect Love and Perfect Trust to celebrate the joy of their union. This is a time to celebrate the coming together of the masculine and feminine creative energies. Beltane marks the emergence of the young God into manhood. Stirred by the energies at work in nature, he desired the Goddess. They fall in love, lie among the grasses and blossoms and unite. The flowers and greenery symbolise the Goddess and the Maypole represents the God. Beltane marks the return of vitality and passion of summer. Another common focal point of the Beltane rituals is the cauldron, which represents the Goddess. It is a time to ask yourself what will you focus on? What can you change to make life better? What can you do to spread goodwill? Let the energy of Beltane carry you closer to your goals. Beltane activities could include watching the sun rise, have a camp out, sit around a fire with friends, jump the Beltane fire leaving behind anything that is holding you back, make and walk a spiral or labyrinth and of course dance around the maypole! Symbols are May garlands, the Maypole, May dolls, Beltane fire, the May King and Queen, The Green Man, John Barleycorn, the hobbyhorse, mummery, flowers, mirrors and the Fae. Deity: Aphrodite, Artemis, Bast, Diana, Flora, Lady of the Greenwood, May Queen, Prithvi, Rhea, Venus, Bel, Green Man, Herne, Horned God, Jack in the Green, May King, Pan Colours: Sky blue, light green, lavender, orange, pink, peach, red, turquoise, white, yellow Gemstones: Sapphires, bloodstones, emeralds, orange carnelians and rose quartz. Herbs: Almond, angelica, ash trees, birch trees, bluebells, cinquefoil, daisies, frankincense, hawthorn, ivy, lilac, marigolds, primroses, rosemary, roses, satyrion root, woodruff and yellow cowslip. {Download FREEBIE pack here.} Economics is my absolute FAVORITE social studies unit to teach. There are so many hands-on activities to do with students and they are so eager to earn and spend money! One of my favorite activities is to end with our "Madden's Marketplace." This is a chance for students to put into action all of the things they have learned about being producers and consumers. To begin with, I send home a letter asking students to create paper goods. Why paper? It's something all of my students have at home (or I can easily give them). I want my marketplace to be fair for all students. I'm sure I could let them have the freedom to create any product, using any materials and I would get some amazing masterpieces. I would also get some elaborate (and expensive) items. That's not what I want. I encourage parents to spend NO money on this and for it to be STUDENT CREATED. I really want them to take the initiative. Here are some samples of paper products my students created to sell this year - everything from rockets to bookmarks to lanterns to hats. I incorporate the making of goods into my students' homework schedule, encouraging them to create two products per night. Before the due date, we work on creating "shops" in class. We create our "shop" by gluing two file folders together. The picture below is using legal-sized file folders, but that just happens to be what we had available. Shop Parts: Signs: Initially, we create the signs for our shops, color the awnings to make them eye-catching. Open/Closed: Next, we create open/closed signs that sit atop our shop so we can easily flip the sign to show the status of our shops. Slogan: We then come up with a catchy slogan. We talk about slogan's we know from commercials. Why did those stick in our heads? We learn to use a play on words, alliteration, onomatopoeia, etc. to make our slogans catchy so consumers will remember them. Product Description: Students each write a product description detailing WHAT their product is and HOW it works or can be used. We talk about the importance of letting consumers know exactly what they are getting. Commercial Script: Finally, students write commercials to "sell" their products to their classmates. We use hooks to get their attention, repetitions of our catchy slogans, and persuasion. Other Components: We also glue on the Consumer Comments, Price, and Interest Inventories, but we leave all of those blank initially. On the day of the marketplace, students set up their shops and lay their products out on display. Then, they have a chance to walk around the classroom and "window shop." They are encouraged to take a good look at all of their options, reading the product descriptions and examining the merchandise. After students have had a good look at all of their choices, I give them stickers (I would recommend 3-4). They walk around and place their stickers on the "Interest Inventory" of the products that interest them the most. The results of the interest inventory are used by the shop owners to determine if they have a high demand or low demand for their products. Knowing the demand helps them determine a price for their product. High demand = higher price. Low demand = lower price. The only rule is that all prices have to be in whole dollars. Once prices are set, then students are ready to go shopping! There are many different ways to let students shop. Some years, if I've done economy-based management system, my students will use "money" they've earned to shop. This year, I just gave them all $12 to shop with. I'm always torn about letting my students split into groups to run their shops (half shop while half work) - it always seems that students don't get to shop at all of the stores in that scenario. To solve that problem, I let all of my students shop at the same time. To do this students create "tokens" to leave at their shop. They create the same number as products they have to sell. For example, if Katie has 10 kites to sell, she creates and leaves 10 tokens with her name or shop name on them. Once each shop has tokens, students are ready to shop. Since there are no workers at the shops to collect money, I give my students "consumer spending logs" with pictures of dollars on them. Since I gave my students 12 dollars to spend, their consumer spending logs had 12 one dollar pictures. As students go around to the shops, they color in the dollars they've spent and pick up tokens (NOT products) that they will trade in for their purchases once the shops close. Once all of the tokens are gone, that shop is "closed." Once a student has colored in all of the dollars on his/her spending log, they are done shopping. It really works out quite well. Once students have traded all of their tokens in for their goods, they are given paper for providing feedback to the shops. They slip these into the "consumer comments" pockets on the storefronts. They love reading the feedback from their customers! <3 After wrapping up our shops, students are often left with some extra products. Instead of having them take their own products back home, I let them put another economics concept into practice - BARTERING! They have a blast working out "fair swaps" for their products and really working to get the other things they may have wanted but didn't have the money to purchase...and of course, they do all of this while proudly wearing some of their favorite purchases. :) All in all, it is a fun day of learning. Students take their roles as both producers and consumers seriously and come away with a real sense of accomplishment! If you would like to download this packet of FREE resources to hold your own Economics shop, you can do so HERE. Enjoy!

Okay, here's the third (and, with luck, final) go-round. I've alphabetized all the definitions and done some tweaking of some of them. I think this makes for a much easier to read poster, though one consequence of doing that is there's a definition in the right-hand column that is broken. Sorry,…

Happy Thursday, everyone! What a gorgeous day we had yesterday! I am afraid we are having our September in August……and we might have our August in September, yikes! Anyway, August 17 is rolling around…and that is Cassidy’s third birthday! So when I saw Rita’s lovely sketch for the Freshly Made Sketches this week, I knew I would use it to make my wee DGD’s card! First, here’s the sketch: Ah, she had me when I saw the three circles! I used images from A Fitting Occasion, and since they are small, I made my card notecard sized: Cassidy will be the first one to tell you that her favorite color is GREEN! So Grammy made sure there was some green in here, along with some other yummy colors: I think cutting out those three candles is the tiniest fussy-cutting I’ve ever done! And then the inside: Oh my, how can she be three already?! Here are some pictures of her eating a mini cupcake from a week or so ago….not her birthday cupcakes, but another batch I made. Needless to say, eating a cupcake to Cassidy means just eating the frosting….a girl after my own heart! Enjoy your day!
