This file contains 12 different animal category related vocabulary words along with various activities and worksheets to practice the terms. The included words are: warm-blooded, cold-blooded, mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish, bird, vertebrate, invertebrate, insect, arachnid, extinct. •Sort Cards: The first card has a term, and the second card has an image and definition. To use these cards, I do the following: print on cardstock, laminate for durability, cut the cards, mix 1 set of cards in a bag., give students the bag, and allow them to match the picture and definition cards to the term cards. (The pictures help here—students know to match a picture card with a non-picture card.) •Clip Cards: There are two different types of clip cards. The first set has eight categories of animals (mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish, bird, insect, arachnid, invertebrate) listed around the edges with characteristics in the center. The students place a clip on each animal category that has that characteristic (for example, cold-blooded would be reptile, amphibian, fish, insect, arachnid, and invertebrates). The second set has all 12 vocabulary words around the edge with definitions and/or images in the center, and the students choose the one or two words that match (for example, a picture of a bear would result in clipping both mammal and vertebrate). •Match It: These cards are formatted to work with match up boards. Just print, laminate, and cut on the indicated lines. Slide the cards into the boards and allow students to match the term with the definition using rubber bands. There are two types of cards: match the picture to the category and match the definition to the word. **Directions for making your own match up boards are available for free in my shop. •Category Puzzles: I print and cut these apart and give students a bag with all of the pieces in it. The students then separate out the pieces to form 8 rectangular, 6-piece puzzles. Each puzzle has a left top corner piece that says the animal category (mammal, reptile, amphibian, fish, bird, insect, arachnid, invertebrate), and the other five pieces list characteristics of that category or show images of animals that belong in the category. •Worksheets: cut and paste, crossword, cloze, word search, alphabetical order, scrambled words recording sheet*, assessment page *Scrambled Words: Each word family set has twelve words, so I created two egg cartons for each set. I numbered plastic eggs 1-12 and then placed letter tiles to spell a word from each set into the eggs (a different word for each egg). The students then chose an egg, unscrambled the letters, and wrote the word on their paper for the corresponding number, category-related. A digital vocabulary practice activities set is also available. For more information about this resource, and other vocabulary activities, see the blog post Vocabulary Activities.

New Zealand has over 200 species of freshwater macroinvertebrates. An invertebrate is an animal that lacks a backbone. ‘Macro’ means the invertebrates are large enough to be seen without magnification – even though some can be as small as 1 mm in length. Examples of aquatic macroinvertebrates include crustaceans (such as sand hoppers), insects (such as beetles and mayflies), molluscs (such as snails) and segmented worms (such as leeches).

Tonight I'm thanking the good Lord above that the weekend has arrived. This week was r-o-u-g-h! Tuesday was just about the longest day of my life...I'm telling ya, it was never ending (you know that Lambchops song? I was feeling like it was the day that never ends!). I packed Wednesday for a Thursday/Friday trip for a district training and came back this afternoon to a faculty meeting where our principal told us she is moving school. It's been an emotionally draining week. Needless to say, my firsties and I trucked on through it. Here's a peek at our week: 1) We went totally buggy this week! My kids are obsessed with the word "schema" and love letting me know what they know. We recorded some schema, watched a BrainPOP then recorded some new learning. 2) We learned about a new insect each day and recorded facts about them, labeled their parts, and completed a directed drawing. Here are some anchor charts I hung around the room. 3) After learning about the parts of an insect's body, they had to build a bug and have a buddy check their work. 4) The day we learned about Caterpillars and Butterflies, we made a cute and fun life cycle activity with noodles to represent each stage of the cycle. 5) Another milestone has been reached, and why not celebrate!!! Ashely Sanderson from Flying High in First Grade and myself are putting together a 150 follower giveaway. She has become a great bloggy friend and both of our blogs have been growing at the same rate. Take a look at some of the great bloggers who are helping us out with our giveaway. Throughout the week, we will be adding a few more. Make sure you are following the bloggers below for easy entry when the giveaway starts! Have a relaxing weekend friends!
