Beginning of School After two weeks the High School Art Room is beginning to look more like my typical art room. Lots of projects are in progress, art supplies are out, students are beginning to relax a little. I've been trying to stay caught up with paperwork, but I am already sick of that! If I could just teach art and not do 'paperwork', I think this would be the 'ideal' job! So far, my classes have been great and I am looking forward to a wonderful year. Value Studies Supplies Needed: Drawing Pencils - 2B-6B White Drawing Paper - 18x24 White Sheet or piece of fabric Lamp to Shine on the Fabric I usually start off my Art 2 and 3 with a value study drawing. I hang a sheet and another piece of fabric (to give them a choice) and place a lamp to shine onto the fabrics to enhance the highlights and shadows. I also place samples of drawings that I have done or former student drawings on the wall for them to see how the drawing should fill the page and the range of values that is possible when drawing something that is only black and white. The goal is for the students to learn how to add values to add depth to their drawings and to give them more experience in drawing from life. You can see some of my students' work from this project here: Value Studies Mrs. Macre♥Art

Several years ago I needed a lesson to cover a week's absence after a planned surgery. I wasn't sure if I'd get an art sub, and started getting that awful feeling in the pit of my stomach. What if they let the kids trash the room or waste supplies? It wasn't fair to assign a week of bogus activities or make the sub feel like a babysitter. The compromise was to have students create a monochromatic postcard with watercolor pencils. All the joy of painting with limited supplies and clean up hassle. As I looked through my previous lessons to select which I would keep, tweak or toss for this year, I kept coming back to this lesson. There was something really fun for the kids about working small, so I thought...what if we went smaller than a postcard? A polaroid is smaller than a postcard and it gave them a fun connection to instagram. We rarely work with squares, so that was an added compositional challenge. After an intro to color theory and some painting practice, I was concerned they wouldn't be able to show off the many techniques they were learning, and decided a series of 3 would help. They can fit four on a page, so it gives them an extra space for an "oops." And perhaps, because it's almost Christmas the theme of polaroids past, present and future sprung to mind. Both lessons are available in my TpT shop if you'd rather skip the preparation.

If you've been following along for the past 2 years you will know that I get amazing work out of my Beginning 2-d kids. And this year is no different. Their self-portrait collages were exquisite, so deeply thought out and so beautifully executed. Of course they had to jump thru a ton of hoops for me with the requirements I laid on them; a few examples are a bas-relief focal point, textural elements, a color scheme, text, and the list goes on and on. This top one was done by senior Michelle Chang, and she titled it "The Weight of Age". It's just so sensitive and lovely. Above we have sophomore Megan Yeu with "Taken Back to Reality". Aren't these just gorgeous and so well done? Below is senior Carolina Navor with "The Ability to Let Go". I have the kids start their base with a collaged backdrop in which we recycle a lot of various papers I collect. Then the kids have access to all kinds of embellishments such as beads, buttons and hardware that have been donated. But the best part of these pieces are the critical thinking skills used to put the major portion together with like the girl on the swing Carolina has built. Next we have senior William Luo with his extremely well thought out piece that he calls "Lost in Thought". Totally cool piece!!! And below is senior Victoria Wang with "We Fall Like Leaves". Just look at the attention to detail these kids put into these works! Above senior Joseph Chon sat for days thinking how he wanted to portray himself. He racked is brain, getting so upset because he just had one of those brain freezes. Almost on the last day this is what he came up with, simple but so effective. He titled it "Waiting". And lastly we have senior Tiffany Yeh with her piece titled "Stripped". Again, check out the attention to detail and the involved collaged backdrop. For EXTRA CREDIT on any colored piece of paper, cut out the profile of your face as best you can, decorate it and put your name and period on the front, and the name of the person from above who did your favorite collaged self-portrait. The more you do with it the more points you will earn.

Got lots of newspaper piling up on a corner? In this post, you'll learn how to create this eye-catching collage pop art piece using old newspaper, some Elmer's glue, and a touch of acrylic paint. This is a great way to recycle and turn boring white canvas into something you would be proud to hang up (or even sell!).

These were done by my Intermediate and Advanced 2-d students as a warm up/drawing review at the beginning of the year. I'm just a little tardy getting them posted. My Intermediate class had to do a ten step value scale and my Advanced kids a 15 step scale. They were allowed to be as creative as possible with their subjects that their scales were put into. The whole thing was done in graphite. Above we have senior Michael Chen (Art II) with this very clean piece, and below is senior Crislyn Ogawa (Art II) with this very mystic feeling subject. Junior Sam Arias (Art III) drew this beautifully sensitive alligator above with her crazy, amazing right brain drawing skills, and senior Jessica Liu (Art II) did the dramatic, emotionally charged piece below. What a great way to start off the year!
