Architect: César Manrique 1966, 1992 The artist's former private residence, in Taro de Tahíche near Teguise, was built after his return to Lanzarote from the US. The 3,000 m2 home is more a loose agglomeration of volumes, strewn over a lava field, which disguises the real clou of the design: The six interconnected subterraenian lava bubbles (cavities formed by gas pockets in the molten lava) upon which the house is built, and which serve as a series of indoor and outdoor spaces including a pool patio, gardens and several lounges centered on trees growing through natural skylight openings. The residence was turned into a museum and home of the Fundación César Manrique in 1992.
