This has proven to be a rather productive year when it comes to intervention. We saw gaps in our RtI process and we worked hard to fill them. Is it a perfect system? No. It never will be because we are working with changing, growing little humans. But we are meeting their needs on a more individual basis better than any other year I can remember. And that is progress, for sure. Earlier this school year, I shared what we did to change our RtI process. One important change that we made has to do more with our philosophy that resulted in action. We really believe that one blanket intervention is not the answer. And I will admit that before I knew better, this is exactly what I did. "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." -Maya Angelou I had access to one program and that is what I used to intervene with all my Tier 2 students. I truly believe that we need to analyze and determine what each student really NEEDS to move them forward. So this is exactly what we did this year. We assessed, analyzed, and determined what intervention would best meet the needs of each and every student in our K-2 building. Some of them needed a handwriting intervention. I have never provided handwriting interventions before. Over and over again it has been mentioned that students are moving grade to grade and their writing is not legible. So we decided to do something about it. And what we found is that it was a very quick intervention. For most students it took less than 5 minutes a day and lasted only a couple of weeks. Once I analyzed some baseline data, I was able to determine the students that needed additional assistance on letter or number formation. Then I made a list of the exact letters or numbers that were in need. Handwriting Without Tears has a sequence that they feel is best when teaching upper case and lower case letters. By using this sequence, I was able to make connections between letters that are formed in a similar way. I used their sequence, plus the assessment data to determine the letters that I would focus on each day. Here is an example: Then I began working with each student. We would review previous letters learned. Then I would show them how to form two new letters. First they would trace the letter with sandpaper. Then we would draw the letter in the air with our arm and on the table with our index finger. These movements would transfer onto paper. I would model the letter formation with a highlighter on lined paper. The student would trace my letter and form their own letter next to mine. The multi-sensory materials used were key. Here are some other options to provide a multi-sensory experience. This is just salt in a small tin that I bought at Dollar General for 25 cents. Students use the eraser end of a pencil to form the letter. This is an old place mat that I cut up. I drew lines on it so that we could use our finger to write the letters. I have also placed paper on top to provide a bumpy surface when they write. I like to use a variety of writing tools for motivation, engagement, and to provide different sensory experiences. Kwik Stix just came out with these Thin Stix. It feels very smooth when you write with them. For my students, these really "force" them to write with continuous motion. If you do not, a gap will form in the letters (see image below). For this reason, I have found these to be really helpful when I work on handwriting. I found great success with the intervention because it was multi-sensory, one on one, explicit, and direct. I was worried that the new learning would not transfer over into class work and writer's workshop. For the students that I worked with, I did analyze their writing pieces with them. We looked over their letter formation together. Then practiced any letters that they still were not comfortable writing. This little added analysis really made a difference with the transfer of knowledge. Any handwriting tips? I'll take them! Em

Welcome to the next post in our series on Orton-Gillingham lesson plan basics! We recently posted on the Vowel Intensive activity and the Three-Part Drill, including the visual, auditory and blending components. In case you missed our latest article on the Vowel Intensive activity, click HERE! This weeks’ Orton-Gillingham Lesson Basics covers the next lesson component, the multisensory introduction of a skill. While reading this article, think about how beneficial multisensory teaching is for all learners. It’s not only effective … it’s fun too! What is the Purpose of a Multisensory Activity? Multisensory teaching engages multiple learning pathways, which is beneficial for all readers, yet critical for struggling readers. When a new skill is introduced using a multisensory approach, it is introduced in a way which simultaneously links visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic pathways. The more senses involved, the more likely students retain and recall the information after practice and repetition. According to the National Reading Panel, about 40% of students require phonics-based reading instruction, where skills are taught explicitly, using multisensory approaches. Many of us have a lesson or activity we vividly remember from when we were young. Maybe it was a hands-on science lesson, a math song to help remember a tricky formula, or a librarian acting out a historical character. You probably remember this lesson or activity because it was taught to you using a multisensory approach. In the math song example, singing the formula in addition to writing it with pencil and paper was involved. Singing fired up the auditory system and therefore another area of the brain. Teachers and parents may not even recognize they are teaching using multisensory strategies! They are naturally more engaging, interactive and, to put it simply … fun. What Does Introducing a Skill Look Like? When a new skill is introduced, students practice saying a sound or applying a rule (spelling rule, etc). The students then partake in an activity that fully engages them in the sound and symbol, or spelling rule. If a spelling rule is being introduced, each step is explicitly outlined and practiced. Make it Multisensory Below is one example of a multisensory way to introduce the concept of Magic-E or Silent-E. This is a good example to demonstrate because it explicitly teaches the concept while engaging multiple senses. Silent-E is sort of like a ninja. It’s sneaky in that it remains at the end of a word yet is never heard. It just sits there, glaring at the previous vowel and making it say its name. Ninja-e, however, does have a weakness. It can only hop back over one consonant to make the previous vowel say its name. Students can build a Ninja-E with pipe cleaners and attach on the top of their pencil to practice applying the Silent-E during dictation. After writing a word, they can have Ninja-E glare at the previous vowel and tell you what sound the vowel now makes. They can also illustrate their own Ninja-E card, cut out CVC word cards, and teach a partner the rule. Other multisensory examples include illustrations, mnemonic devices, games, and tactile crafts. Students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities often learn differently and require an alternative approach to learning basic reading. What's more, these young learners are working full tilt while sitting in the classroom and by the time they get home and have to complete their homework, they are mentally spent. As a result, tagging on remedial reading lessons to a cup that is already overflowing can be enough to turn these kids off to learning altogether. How Do We Help These Students Learn the Core Skills Needed to be Successful Readers? First, use a remedial program that is backed by time, testimonials and research. The Orton-Gillingham approach to reading is a well-established and researched approach that offers a multisensory, sequential, incremental, cumulative, individualized, and explicit approach. There are many programs that are available. Click here to learn about a selection of these programs. Second, employ an individualized approach as each student has unique challenges and gaps in knowledge. If you need to assess the areas that require remediation be sure to use an assessment tool such as the Good Sensory Learning Reading Assessment Third, the process needs to be fun and engaging. Many programs required students to slog through boring lessons, complicated rules, and bland workbook pages. Many of these concepts can be instructed through cute memory strategies and fun activities. You can find many fun supplemental materials here. Fourth, integrate a student-created, colorful, language arts handbook or guide. Click here to learn more about this method. Fifth, help students learn how to visualize what they are reading. Many struggling readers do not have the cognitive space to use their mind's eye when reading, therefore, developing this skill to automaticity is key. Sixth, and most important, supplement all reading programs with card and board games that allow students to practice the concepts they are learning. Struggling readers and spellers often have the most difficulty with vowels. Vowels are the most elusive letters in the English language. Because they are used in every word – even the two shortest words “a” and “I” – students must become proficient in vowel usage. One way to help students gain fluency and proficiency with vowel sounds is through games. Today’s Multisensory Monday activity is the game of Bingo with a Vowel Intensive twist! Vowel Bingo In this activity, the student rolls a single die then uses the chart on the Advanced Vowel Intensive Bingo Download to determine which word to color in on the Bingo board. As in traditional Bingo, the student tries to get five in a row to win the game. *DOWNLOAD FREE LONG O BINGO HERE In this example, the student is using the Advanced Vowel Intensive Bingo – Long O Soundboard. If the student rolls a five on her first turn, she colors in any square with a word ending in OE. If the student then rolls a one, she colors in any square with a single O at the end of the word. Play continues until the student gets five in a row. While this example focuses on the long O sound, a blank game board can be found below.
