I was asked to present Interactive Student Notebooks at our Gulf Regional Innovative Teaching Conference. I have used them in my classroom for 4 years and was super happy to share all of the things I have stolen from other teachers! I only had 50 minutes to talk about something I could talk for days about! What better way to teach teachers about interactive notebooks than to have them create their own! This is also my love letter to Math Equals Love for putting her amazing ideas out into the math world. I actually do have some of my own ideas but I am sure they originate from hers! I put all the handouts together, in order, for each participant so I would not have to use precious time passing things out. I think this saved time. That and me talking super fast! I wanted them to leave with a product and something tangible they could refer to. My classroom model notebook that I keep through the year is helpful for me the next year to look back on. It was important to me that they experience the "interactive" notebook like students do. A couple of the staple activities used in my classroom were easily adapted. There are not enough adjectives to describe how happy using Math Equals Love's Unit Dividers make me! You can see the green one in the notebook above. If you do interactive notebooks, you need these in your life! The next thing was to show how important color with meaning is to the interactive notebook. I first saw the idea of a coloring page from Math Equals Love for translating expressions. For the conference, teachers color coded "Why Should My Classes Use ISNs?" into three categories. These are all of the reasons I love using interactive notebooks with my students. My students answered a survey at the end of the year about them and the overwhelming theme of their answers were that the notebooks were fun and made it easy to keep up with their stuff. Students take ownership of their notebooks and are proud of them. Pockets or envelopes are a staple of interactive notebooks. They are great for holding flash cards, task cards, any kind of cards you have! For the teacher's notebook, I put cards of all the supplies they would need. Card sorts and matching are two activities that you can use for everything. This matching activity had the teachers match the word with things they needed to think about in setting up their notebooks for their classes. A shutter foldable had them talk about the administrative things when using notebooks. My favorite page was the mini foldables! They turned out super cute! But it also gave teachers practice in folding and taping as well as ideas of what foldable to use for which notes. How could I not show them POOF books? They are one of my students' favorite foldable. I first saw these at Math Equals Love where she had made it for exponent rules. Inside, teachers found advice about using interactive notebooks. To show how to layer pages and how the tape makes hinges, the last page had a couple of pages of resources for them. Bloggers that do interactive notebooks and things to ask Google, especially MTBoS, were on the pages along with a place for them to write notes. It only took two trips to haul the supplies into the building! I think I won for most stuff required for a presentation! Teachers seemed excited to take interactive notebooks back to their classrooms and that makes me excited! Find all the things here!

I've written before about how "close reading," presented as a "NEW and IMPROVED" way to teach reading sorta rubs me the wrong way. Like most buzz words and theories in education, I get annoyed when they are touted as the brand new way of doing things that will save education as we know it! Because the thing is... most likely, someone has just polished up and renamed something that great teachers have known and practiced for years! Close reading is a perfect example. For infinity years, great teachers have known that for kids to really comprehend a piece of text, they have to dig through, connect to, and understand all its complex layers. That's why my sixth grade teacher spent two whole days talking with us about Dally going down in his "blaze of glory" when we read The Outsiders. And it's why in 9th grade we spent almost a month with The Old Man and the Sea.... all 128 whopping pages of it! Great teachers have been getting kids to close read for a long time. It's not new or improved. It's sound practice and it's something that all ELA teachers... and science and social studies and math teachers... should be working with kids to do! So, just what do I mean when I say "close reading?" Well, according to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC): Close, analytic reading stresses engaging with a text of sufficient complexity directly and examining meaning thoroughly and methodically, encouraging students to read and reread deliberately. Directing student attention on the text itself empowers students to understand the central ideas and key supporting details. It also enables students to reflect on the meanings of individual words and sentences; the order in which sentences unfold; and the development of ideas over the course of the text, which ultimately leads students to arrive at an understanding of the text as a whole. (PARCC, 2011, p. 7) For me, there is no better tool in the world for teaching close reading than our Interactive Student Notebooks. I've written before about how I use these and today I am going to talk about why. Interactive Notebooks, and more specifically, the foldable organizers and literary analysis questions are the best tools I've found for getting kids to read, reread, and reread closely. Here is a timeline of how we approach a piece of literature: Day One: 1.) I introduce our story and provide any relevant background knowledge. I keep this short and sweet... about a 10-15 minute chat. 2.) The students listen to (either I read it or we listen to it on our audio anthology) or independently read our story. Day Two: 1.) I introduce the skill or device we will discussing within the context of our story and give students the literary analysis question that they will be answering. Typically, I do this by reviewing our notes from earlier in the unit, and then reading and breaking down the question. 2.) Then students reread, using Post-Its to mark places in our story that we should go back and examine. 3.) We come back together and discuss the places where students put their Post-Its and how those spots are relevant to our question. 4.) I distribute the foldable organizer that we will be using to help us sort our thinking and find evidence that will support our answer to the literary analysis question. Students then reread again, this time focusing on the specific details necessary to complete the organizer. Here are a just few of my favorite organizers: Day Three: 1.) Students participate in a Literary Analysis Station designed to zero in on our skill even more! Here they discuss and often, yes... REREAD, the text in detail. 2.) Students answer the literary analysis question. Day Four: We take a quiz on our story. I allow students to use the text for their quiz because it is not about how much they've memorized, but rather how well they can make assertions about the story and support it with evidence. So, chances are when they take this quiz they are rereading yet again. So, that's one piece of literature, read and reread and reread for analysis several times over four days! I can absolutely attest that most of the kids are experts on how the skills and devices we cover are exemplified in the story. And even my most struggling readers can hold their own in complex conversations regarding the story. If you have never tried Interactive Notebooks, I urge you to give them a go! After winter break is as good of a time as any to start incorporating some of these strategies into your teaching. If you decide to give them a try, I'd love to hear how it goes for you! This is a Slope Race Partner Activity . This activity will give your students practice with finding slope and it requires them to use their expressive and receptive language skills to share information with a partner. There are 4 problems for students to complete. Step One : Break your class up into pairs. (I like to partner students who have more mastery over slope with students who are struggling.) Hand out blank race packets to the students and explain to them that they will need to work as a team to win the race. Step Two : Once the first team finishes, check their answers but encourage the other teams to keep going for 2nd and 3rd place. You could also vary this activity by setting a timer and having students race against the clock. The first team that finishes with correct answers before the time ends are the winners. This makes a great review activity at the end of the math unit. An answer key is included. I hope you enjoy! Motivating students can be very tricky. It’s one of the most studied and discussed educational topics for not only teachers but parents as well! But to get to how we should motivate students, we need to take a look at what has happened to motivation in the first place.

Forced organization is a crucial part of teaching middle school students. Many students in the 7th grade could not find their head if it was not attached to their bodies, let alone the homework from last night or the notes from three months ago. As a mildly OCD, type A personality, with a (not so) secret love for The Container Store this general unorganization would not fly in my classroom. Enter the Interactive Student Notebook. The idea of a student notebook is not entirely a new concept, though it does seem to be gaining a renewed sense of popularity. Essentially an Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) is a composition notebook where the students keep their notes and self practice work all in one place. However, a good ISN is so much more than that. Ideally notes are taken in ways that will help students remember the concepts; ideas are grouped on pages using foldables and color. Examples are specifically chosen to represent the main ideas of the concepts and student work included is purposefully selected. Much of my ISN is based on Sarah Rubin's Interactive Notebooks. She is a genius when it comes to explaining how notebooking works and how she started. I HIGHLY recommend you go read her blog posts to help you get started. (Sarah Rubin's Everybody is a Genius Blog) Now for my two cents. While I loved Sarah's set up, I was struggling to find a way to keep myself organized and tie in a way to help absent students catch up. Thus, the ISN Bucket was born. The ISN Bucket is the organizational system behind my ISN. Each hanging file folder corresponds to one set of ISN pages. Within each folder are the copies or foldables used on that page. Each tab is also color coded to show which groups of pages are from the same chapter or unit. The very first file holds my ISN as an example for students who were absent. The last three files contain extra blank paper, graph paper, and vocabulary boxes similar to the ones found here. I added a file to the box as we added pages to our ISN's last year but this year I will have my ISN pages ready to go! (Not that I won't do some tweaking and editing but it will be a nice place to start!) I should add that this bucket sits out on a counter in my classroom and students have free access to its contents. When students return from being absent, and want to know what they missed, I just point to the bucket and they know what to do! Are you using an Interactive Student Notebook?
