Did you know that pineapple is the symbol of hospitality, friendship and, in some cultures, of good fortune? Apart from their great taste, pineapples also have a distinguished look which is so fun to draw. Since it stands for such great things, a pineapple greeting seems like a cool idea for sending out a card and the Pineapple Fold-A-Long Sizzix card die by Jen Long makes it really easy! Here are the materials I used in case you want to follow along. Supplies: Sizzix Thinlits Die Set 10PK - Card, Pineapple Fold-a-Long Sizzix 3-D Textured Impressions Embossing Folder - Pineapple Texture (optional)Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (White & Gray) Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Standard, 1 Pair (Purple w/Silver Glitter) Sizzix Accessory - Standard Magnetic Platform for Wafer-Thin Dies Sizzix Accessory - Multipurpose Platform, Standard (optional) Other: White Cardstock, Paints, Paint brush, Bone Folder, Adhesive, Stencil, Whipped Spackle, Scissors Now, let me walk you through the steps. Fold an 8.5" x 11" white cardstock in half to 8.5" x 5.5". Use bone folder to create a crisp edge. Place your die on the folded paper to double check that the width of the die fits the paper. To die-cut the Pineapple card base, create the following Sizzix Sandwich – On Sizzix Accessory - Standard Magnetic Platform for Wafer-Thin Dies, lay another Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Standard, 1 Pair (Purple w/Silver Glitter). Place the folded cardstock on it. Line up the straight edge of the Pineapple card base die from the Sizzix Thinlits Die Set 10PK - Card, Pineapple Fold-a-Long, blade side down on the paper. The strong magnets of the Standard Magnetic Platform for Wafer-Thin Dies will hold your Thinlits die securely in place for precision cutting. Place the other Standard Cutting Pad on top and start turning the handle of your Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (White & Gray). The rollers in the Big Shot machine will propel the entire sandwich through the machine and you’ll have your die-cut pieces ready. The Sizzix Thinlits Die Set 10PK - Card, Pineapple Fold-a-Long also includes a sentiment block and several embellishments. Die-cut those using the exact same Sizzix Sandwich as above. Here's the die-cut extended gate-fold card base in the shape of a pineapple. This card base can be folded along the crease lines to make a uniquely shaped accordion. Follow the crease lines to fold the parts, making sure that the edges line up nicely. Crease down with the bone folder to create clean crisp edges. Paint the leafy part of the Pineapple green, front and back. You could also use color cardstock or patterned paper but I find it a lot more fun to paint my pieces. Paint the fruit part of the pineapple, a light yellow, if you are taking the painting route. Be sure to paint both front and back as you'll see all sides when the card is finished. Also paint the die-cut embellishments, sentiment and sentiment block. Set them aside for now. Now, pineapples have a signature textured skin. So to make my pineapple look the part, I chose a diamond stencil and applied Whipped Spackle with palette knife on the front flaps of my card. Then I let the paste dry completely. If mixed media is not your style, you can also use the Sizzix 3-D Textured Impressions Embossing Folder - Pineapple Texture to bring your pineapple to life, so to speak. For that, die-cut a duplicate pineapple card base using the same Sizzix Sandwich as above. Cut along the very first and very last sections of the pineapple with scissors. Cut off the leafy tops from both sections. If you choose to emboss your pineapple, create the following Sizzix Sandwich: Place your die-cut pineapple sections inside the Sizzix 3-D Textured Impressions Embossing Folder - Pineapple Texture Place the folder on the embossing platform of the Sizzix Accessory - Multipurpose Platform, Standard and cover with one Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Standard. Start turning the handle of your Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (White & Gray). The rollers in the Big Shot machine will propel the entire sandwich through the machine and you’ll have your embossed piece. Attach the embossed pieces to the front flaps with adhesive. Insert the sentiment block/label from the Sizzix Thinlits Die Set 10PK - Card, Pineapple Fold-a-Long in the center slot of the card. I suggest you do this step before embellishing the sentiment block to make sure that none of the embellishments get in the way of your card closing correctly. Quilling Glue Basics - 5 Helpful Tips Do you have a hard time with glue showing on your quilling? In this video I’m going to share all the gluing tips I’ve learned since I started in 2006. Tip 1 – Smear Your Glue Puddle I often see instruction to pour out some glue, and then to dip your quilling into the puddle, but it’s easy to overcoat your quilling strip this way, which means your glue will be seen on your final work surface. Instead, I prefer to use another piece of plastic to smear the puddle flat. This way the depth of your glue puddle is very shallow. This allows you to gently press the innermost coils into the glue, coating every bit of it. When I pick it up, I pre-loosen the inner coils so the glue’s suction won’t destroy the smooth arcs. After lifting, I always turn it upside down to check if I’ve missed coating any of it. If I did, I’ll simply re-dip again. Tip 2 - Missed Spots Now, if you coiled your strip unevenly, it’s quite easy to miss getting it dipped fully into the glue. Or maybe you missed dipped a certain section. What do you do if your strip is already on your work surface? Let me show you how to add glue in a case like this. Apply glue to a scrap piece of quilling paper and slip it under the areas that are missing glue, the press your strip down. Tip 3 - Glue Dipping and Smearing Cards When smearing my glue for dipping my pieces, I prefer to use a plastic card that has a matte surface rather than a high gloss surface. I usually use the Oyster card I got when I visited London. Tip 4 - How to Undo Glued Pieces As all quillers know, our work is hard to undo. If you’ve glued something down, don’t just tear it up. You’ll end up tearing the fibres of your work surface. Instead, I extend an x-acto knife and slowly slice through the glue horizontally. This is another reason why it’s good to use as little glue as possible. If you have some stubborn bits, you may need to scrape the surface a bit. I then use an eraser to gently scour the fragments. Finally I use a bone folder to smoothen the surface as much as possible. I only remove my quilling as a last resort, and you’ll get the best results the faster you make your decision before the glue fully dries. I do suggest that you practice on a scrap piece first. Tip 5 - My Favorite Quilling Glue Brand I’m often asked what brand of glue I use. My favourite is Aleene’s Tacky Glue because it’s thick and dries fast. I use the large bottle when I need to smear it for dipping, and I put it in a fine tip bottle for applying directly onto my quilling strips. I store it upside down in a shot glass with a wet tissue at the bottom so it doesn’t clog and is always ready to use. I hope these tips help you with your quilling.
