Earlier this year, my co-worker Jayne found the idea to make a collaborative school-wide paper mural based on the artwork of Thank YouX. The past few months my students have been making feathers for a group mural. This idea was inspired by my friend and celebrity in the art community, Cassie Stephens! Head on over to her blog and check out her magical art teacher'n treasures at Cassie Stephen's Blog!! Her original inspo was international street artist, Kelsey Montague. Her inspiring murals challenge people to ask the question "What Lifts you" "What makes your heart Soar?" My students are going to be writing about their passions and inspirations that "lifts" them! I want each student that comes to my art class to feel as though they are walking out with wings on their back, so they can bravely rise up to their dreams with courage and passion! I want them to feel confident in themselves and know that the sky is the limit! First, students painted on watercolor paper with tempera paint using a value gradient of tints and shades using one color plus black on the left and white on the right. They had to blend the colors so thet the different shades did not look like stripes One group did primary and secondary colors red, orange, yellow, green blue, and violet. The next group would paint intermediate colors, red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red=violet Fourth and fifth graders used 9' by 24' paper and 3rd graders used smaller paper the next class, students then traced different shapes of feathers using white prisma color pencils and cut them out then they decorated them with unique lines and designs with white prisma color pencils My wonderful and extremely talented student teacher, Naz Kaya Erdal and I layed them out on three large sheets of black butcher paper until the feathers looked symmetrical. Once we finished the shape, we taped each feather down to the paper with painter's tape Then I hung that bad boy with TONS and tons and TONS of staples!! The next morning the kids were SO excited to find their feathers turned into GIANT wings!!! I hope the parents who come to visit will snap a pic in front of the wings and post to #ArtisFly and #riseupandsoar hashtags for social media!

I started back to school this past week with my kids on Tuesday. I had such a great first week and I am so excited to be back making music with them. We spent our first few days going over music room rules and procedures (click here to see rules post), emergency drills, and jumped right into making music. Can I just say that I LOVE pinterest! I found so many great ideas for back to school games through Pinterest as well as from Susan during Level 3. I thought I would share some of the really fun ones that the students enjoyed our first few days back: "Up The Ladder" is a great game for learning the names of your new students. "Down, Down Baby" is from the Amidons. SO FUN! Apparently this is a favorite, because it's being sung on the bus! Hickety Pickety Bumblebee is a fun one to use with K/1. In first grade you could review four voices with "can you sing (whisper, call, speak) your name to me". With kindergarten, it might be a bit intimidating to ask them to sing their name to you on day 1 of music, but let's be honest we are still learning all their names several weeks into the school year. Pull this out with them a little bit later (maybe after you have presented the four voices) and do this then. Mamalama: I learned this in Level 3, and we take it a bit faster than in this video, but it is SO FUN! I even had a student get the last part after just a few listenings. CRAZY! For quite some time I have been playing with the idea of posting a small tutorial, art tidbit or video EVERY Wednesday for a whole year. Well here we are, in the THIRD Wednesday of the New Year and it's time to begin! WHIMSICAL WEDNESDAY #1 of 52...."MINI MOMENTS" PAPER JOURNALS I recently posted this photo on my Instagram (follow me @joannesharpe) and it was so well received, I thought a little tutorial would be in order for my first Whimsical Wednesday post. "WITH A LITTLE WHIMSEY" IDEA: Make a little bit of art every day, in a little bitty size. This is one of my favorite things to do with my water reactive (Tombow) markers or watercolor paints, water brush, paintbrushes and watercolor paper. MAKE YOUR SUPER SIMPLE JOURNALS: Take a strip of watercolor any size you wish. A good place to start is a piece that is approximately 3" x 12". You can always use wider widths of paper too. Fold the paper in half, then in half again and open it up. Fold back each little panel in an accordion fashion. For this book each individual panel is 3"x 3", a perfect size to make little art nuggets. How super and simple, right?? Paint a loose watercolor or marker border as a background and frame in each panel. let dry completely before adding lettering. Add your favorite quotes and inspirational thoughts. Use black pens or colorful markers to make lettering in each box. It doesn't have to be anything fancy or earth shattering, just make a little art every day!
