Think of your leftover paper scraps box as a treasure. Let's turn those bits and pieces into lovely twisted ribbons that make your cards pop!
I recently ran across a new paper crafting technique shown by fellow Stampin' Up! Demonstrator Cary Buckham. The technique, called twisted ribbon, is actually a quilting technique. I love how the technique does appear to be a zig-zag of folded ribbon. To make the panel for my card, I used a pencil to mark every
Here is my tutorial on the woven ribbon flower I did on my SOD layout called "My Girl". I used a strip of mesh on the layout flower, but it is easier to show you the tutorial with using a strip of ribbon I had from my stash. There seems like a lot of steps to this, but it's actually pretty fast moving and easy to do. You can choose a die of your chose as long as the petals are wide. I used a die I had on hand, but this can also work with the six point flower from the Tim Holtz tattered flower die. Here's what you will need: Large and Small Flowers Similar to The Ones in the Pic Approx 2 Feet of Ribbon (Sizes vary with flower sizes so this should give you plenty to work with) Exacto Knife Adhesive Ink, Stickles, Centerpiece Decoration Use your exacto knife to cut slits in the tip of each petal, but don't go to close to the edge. You can cut a center out or use a standard hole punch, like I did. It doesn't have to be pretty, just big enough to allow multiple sections of ribbon through. Box 4 shows how to start your ribbon and about how much to leave on the starting end. Here is the basic steps to weave the ribbon onto your flower. Follow these pictured steps until you get all the way around your flower. This is what you should be left with, once you finish weaving the ribbon. I used glossy accents and ran a small strip on the back of my exposed pedal and pressed down until it stayed. I cut the end of my ribbon that I wove and left enough to glue down as well as shown in the pictures. I forgot to ink my edges in the beginning so I just did them now. I used cats eye chalk because it fits into the tight spots way easier. Now take some adhesive and glue down your smaller center flower. Decorate your center with an item or items of your choice. I used stickles along the tips of both the large and small petals. So this is a finished Woven Ribbon Flower. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial!! Thanks for stopping by and God Bless!!

RIBBON LETTERS! This is a simple technique for getting a ribbon style letter. There are a lot of different techniques out there, but this one makes sense for my 7th-8th graders who have never tried this before. It starts out by writing out a word in cursive. Then you extend the edges back in space. They must all be the same direction, and the same length. For example, if you draw from each edge up 1 inch at 45 degrees to the left, then they all go that same length and direction. For curves, you pick the outermost part of the curve you can find. See the top and bottom of the C in the "Carthage" example? You finish the drawing by drawing in the back edge of the ribbon, which should go the same direction as the front edge (the cursive letter.) Don't forget sometimes you have interior spaces that need to be addressed, like the o in Love in the below example. Color is different. You have lots of options, but I have my students use marker to outline, and colored pencils for shading. Shading can really make you ribbon drawing seem more real. You are trying to get the illusion of depth, and if you gradually shade from light to dark, to show overlap or distance, you can enhance the image. Here are some examples ...

Last holiday season I posted a tutorial on how to make glitter ornaments. The questions about that tutorial keep on coming - and it's now about the ornaments so much as the bow on top! So today we're talking all about how to make the perfect (double) bow. Silhouette School weekly contributors Becky and Glenna from My Paper Craze are here to share their expertise in the bow making department! What's an ornament without a cute little bow for flair? Today, we'll show you how to make an easy double bow in less than a minute with nothing but your fingers and some ribbon. It's not exactly a Silhouette tutorial, but it is definitely need-to-know for crafters! First, you need some thin ribbon, preferably double-sided. I specifically chose not to use double-sided ribbon, just in case you were wondering what the big deal is. Measure out about 32 inches, give or take a little. You can always trim the excess. Now grab your ribbon and follow along! Pinch the ribbon about one-fourth of the way down and drape it over you fingers. Take the longer piece of ribbon and loop it back around your two fingers. Pay close attention to the photos and how the ribbon is looped around each finger. On the second time down, you'll come back to the front of your fingers instead underneath. Loop back up around the tip of your finger and loop to the left. Now tuck the end of your loose piece of ribbon through your two fingers, where they come together at your hand. Pull the loose ribbon end around the back and tuck it under where the ribbon crosses (kind of like tying your shoes). At this point, you can cinch it up and pull the loops together to make the bow. Now just slide it off your fingers and fluff your loops until you're satisfied. If it doesn't come out the first time, don't despair, you can actually untie this and try again with the same piece of ribbon! Can you see the difference with not using the double-sided ribbon? It's not a huge difference, it's more personal preference, but double-sided ribbon is recommended for consistency in the design. Now on to more crafting, you have to make ornaments to put all these bows on! Note: This post may contain affiliate links. This modern greeting card shows a swallow flying with a pink ribbon in its beak. The return of the swallows is always considered a sign of spring, and this lucky bird has found a sweet addition for its nest! It is a reproduction of a vintage Victorian greeting card, circa 1890. You can choose to have this card with or without a matching 1.5" sticker/envelope seal. Simply make your selection from the pulldown menu when you make your purchase. Our cards are all 5" x 7" inches, (unfolded they measure 7" x 10"), printed on heavy matte card stock. All cards are blank inside. Each card comes with an envelope. The image will have a colored border applied, with the image centered in the card and a white border around it, as shown in the samples picture above. Please note that vintage image sizes vary, and are not optimized for modern frames (in case you are buying the card with an eye to framing it.)
