This Dutch Book of Hours was made for a female patron, possibly pictured on fol. 109r, in the mid fifteenth century. Originally richly illuminated by the workshop of the Master of Catherine of Cleves, the manuscript now lacks all of its full-page miniatures, although the eight surviving historiated initials speak to its original grandeur. Its rebinding in the seventeenth century resulted in the loss of several folios and the reordering of many of the texts. While the catalog description here remains faithful to the order of the texts as they appear today, an attempt has been made within the individual parts to reconstruct the original layout of the manuscript. I made a decision several months ago to give up the commission side of my art business. But when my friend Mary approached me a few […]

The Roman numeral XLVI at the top of the leaf indicates it was originally folio 46 of the Gradual. The initial E begins the Introit to the Mass for Epiphany, which is celebrated on 6 January: Ecce advenit Dominator Dominus (Behold the Lord the Ruler is come). The eldest Magus kisses but does not touch—his hands are covered—the feet of Christ, an event described in the thirteenth-century mystical text known as the Meditations on the Life of Christ. It was Tertullian (ca. 160–230), the Christian writer, who transformed the Magi into kings.

Recently in my attempts to get myself to do art post-graduation I have been working on an Illuminted Letters Alphabet. Originally I was just going to make one 'A' but then I got caught up in it, so now I'm moving on to the whole alphabet. Each letter is inspired by an obscure or unusual word. A was before I really had any idea of a theme. I guess in retrospect A is for Aviary. I then experimented with some color, scanning in old test strips of watercolor samples. Still not quite sure if I like that look or not yet. B is for Bric-a-Brac: Small, usually ornamental objects valued for their antiquity, rarity, originality, or sentimental associations C is for Cornucopia. Then I got bored with D and skipped to H, which is for Horology: the art or science of measuring time Currently in progress is E for Entomology
