The late 19th century was a critical time of change: social, economical, political, and more. This change resulted from the revolutions of the previous centuries. Three such revolutions in particular are the French Revolution, Scientific Revolution, and the Christian Reformation. The culmination of these three revolutions gave birth to new political, social, and economical ideologies of Capitalism, Socialism- governmental and non-governmental, and Communism/Anarchism. Each ideology broke bonds w

At Saturday Paper, we believe that beautiful, vintage artwork shouldn’t be difficult to find or reserved only for a specific interior style. The right piece of art can add warmth and story to any space—whether it’s a modern industrial loft, a historic farmhouse, or a bohemian beach bungalow. We aim to curate a collection of vintage art from which you can find just the right piece for your space—whatever your style. PRINT PRODUCT DETAILS Our vintage art prints are high-quality reproductions of original vintage paintings, sketches and drawings. Each one is printed to order on beautiful, textured Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper using an archival printing process called giclée. • Each print comes with a 1” white border for safe handling • Printed on acid-free, thick 308 gsm weight Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper, which is bright white with a soft, textured feel and a matte finish. • As fine art reproductions, cracking, and imperfections may be visible in your print. We retain these details in our files in order to stay true to the character of the piece and believe they should be embraced! • Printed using archival pigmented inks • Archival paper and inks means the print won’t fade or yellow with time • Please be aware that that the color and brightness of the print may vary slightly from what you see on screen. Properly calibrated monitors will be the most accurate for viewing the exact color of a piece. • Print only, frame and any props shown in the photos are not included with this purchase. CANVAS PRODUCT DETAILS Our vintage canvas art prints are high-quality reproductions of original vintage paintings, sketches and drawings. Each one is printed to order on archival matte canvas, mounted and wrapped, and ready for hanging. • Printed with archival inks on a bright white, 19 mil thick matte canvas, and coated with an acid-free, neutral pH matte finish coating. • Archival certified, meaning the piece won’t fade or discolor with time. • Mounted over .75 inch deep stretcher bars with a 1” wrap on all four sides, meaning the image wraps all the way around the canvas without raw canvas sides. • The gallery-wrapped style means this piece looks complete even without a frame. • Hand-finished with acid-free backing made of light-weight matting board, protecting the canvas from dust and debris. • Comes complete with a wire hanger approximately 2/3 of the way up from the bottom of the canvas. A picture hanger wall hook is included and works on most type of drywall. • Ready to hang right out of the box! SHIPPING • All items ship for free. • All items are shipped via USPS First Class Mail or UPS. • Expedited shipping is available, please contact me for details. SIZING The sizes available for each art piece are specific to that artwork. We never offer sizes so large that the quality of the print is compromised. However, if you’re interested in a specific size that you don’t see listed, please reach out. We are happy to provide custom sizes if available. *This artwork is for personal use only and not for commercial use or resale.*

"Atlas Works, Firth Brown" Scans of six slides from the "Sheffield - Steel City" set - A15 in the "Esso Geography Studies" series. The set seems intended for school use and was probably published in early 1960s. Nothing in the pack identifies the photographer or copyright owner. I hope Esso and the photographer(s) will be glad to see these seeing the light of day rather than object to my posting them...? Thank you very much to Sheila for the gift and to Mr Curzon for storing them for our delight years later. The text in the booklet that accompanies the slides is by Prue Dempster - Senior Lecturer in Geography, Whitelands College, London. A lot has changed in the intervening forty years as shown in the pictures but also in the text. A15/5 Atlas Works of Firth Brown Ltd (GR 370890) Two-fifths of Sheffield’s industrial labour force is engaged in steelmaking. Geographical isolation has forced Sheffield to specialize, for constructional steels can be produced more cheaply in coastal areas such as South Wales and North-east England. The steel industry in Sheffield mainly produces high-value, special steels, engineering goods and cutlery. Important inventions have helped the development of the steel industry in Sheffield. The Huntsman process for making crucible steel is associated with Sheffield and the Bessemer process, which rid steel of sulphur and phosphorous impurities, was introduced to Sheffield in 1856 by John Brown. In the Atlas Works, special steels are made in open hearth and electric furnaces. From these steels an extensive range of forgings, sheet steel and rolled products are made in its many forges, rolling mills and heat treatment plants. Pig iron, steel scrap, carbon and alloys are fed into the furnace and the temperature is carefully controlled to produce steels. Chromium and nickel are added to make stainless steel, boron and molybdenum for hard steels and manganese for toughness. Tungsten, vanadium and cobalt are added to make steel which withstands high temperatures while cutting. The steel is then tapped into a ladle and cast into ingot moulds, as in the slide. The ingots are square blocks and vary from a few hundredweight to 200 tons. They are forged or rolled according to the type of product required. In the forges, a large number of engineering components are shaped under hydraulic presses or forging hammers to manufacture turbines, boilers and engine parts for use in factories, nuclear power, oil and chemical plants. In the rolling mills the hot plastic steel is rolled into sheets and long, thin billets, blooms and bars. These are either finished in the works or sold to other companies such as the Hallamshire Steel Company for further processing.
