This sweet thing has turned 7. When Ethen told me he wanted to have an Indiana Jones party, I was super excited. I knew that I'd be able to have fun with this theme. Once again, all ideas were pilfered off of Pinterest and modified to fit my needs. INVITATIONS First I made the invitations and sent them two weeks prior to the party. The contents of the package including the following: For the invitation itself, there were some great silhouette images by Mathew Reynolds on the internet, and I created the Indiana Jones type lettering in Photoshop. I printed all things on my home printer. Next I included a map that I made that gave a little glimpse to where our adventure would eventually take us (Peru, India, and Egypt). I just printed it on normal printer paper and cut around the edge. Then I made a little 12-page booklet that gave them clues and hints to our treasure hunt. They were looking for the lost Peacock's Eye (that I.J. found in Temple of Doom, but lost again). I pulled a lot of my pages out of a cool book called, "The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones" and modified it to fit my needs. They are out of order here, because I was printing booklet form, but you get the idea. I wrapped all the contents into postal paper and found the stamp and postmark online. I reproduced the stamp, printed it on sticker paper, and had my Silhouette cut out the jagged edges and it turned out very realistic. I typed the labels that I got at Michaels using my typewriter and tied them with string. We hand delivered our invitations to the kids. SUPPLIES The first stop for the kids was the supply tent. I made the tent from a sheet and a curtain I got at Goodwill. Dave hung it with PVC pipe. I used my Silhouette to cut out a stencil for the boxes and I just spray painted them. I purchased the leaves, compasses and hats from Oriental Trading. I got the lantern, netting, and antidote from the Dollar Store. I got the crystal skull from Amazon, and the crate from Joanns. I made their canvas bags. I am definitely no seamstress, but even I could make these. Each one took about 15 minutes. Here is a little tutorial. Each bag was 12" x 22.5" which I folded in thirds after finishing one end. I cut notches in the end to make the bottom flat. Then I sewed up the sides. Pinch the notches together and sew shut to make the bottom. I finished the edges all around the flap and then added the strap. The strap was 40" long. After I finished, I ironed them after to give them a better look. Then I printed name tags for them and printed them on a sheet of Silhouette Printable Canvas. TREASURE HUNT I had clues posted around that let them know where to go and what to do. Maya made me some awesome signs for the countries. It was a very blustery day, but we managed to make it work. Their first challenge was to put 3 darts into Camazotz' head. I got the mini blow dart from Amazon for $5.99. It worked really well! Dave wiped the gun down with alcohol swabs after each turn. Next up was a whip challenge. It was blowing hard enough we had to weigh our cups down with rocks. Then they had to replace the golden idol with a bag of rocks without knocking it over. After they all completed the challenges, the next stop was India where we had a feast prepared. PANKOT PALACE I had fun recreating the feast from Temple of Doom. I decorated our dining room with some Hindu gods that I got from the ethnic part of town. The menu: Maya and her friend Lea were our servers. They announced each dish as they brought it in. First up: Snake Surprise (Jimmie John sandwiches shaped like a snake with olives for eyes and a hors d'oeuvres pick for the tongue.) Next we had dried beetle wings (potato chips.) And eyeball soup (grapes in yogurt). Dave served us Pankot Punch (Hawaiian Punch with Sprite). And lastly, for dessert, chilled monkey brains (cupcakes). I just made red velvet cupcakes and shaped the cream cheese frosting like a brain. I printed cupcake holders to wrap around them. Oh no! Did you drink the Pankot Punch? You've been poisoned by the maharajah! Grab the antidote you should have in your bag! So off they headed to Egypt where they encountered a snake pit. And the final clue: Off they went at full speed. There was a pool full of mulch on the island that had obvious treasure in it. They quickly tore it apart and found some jewels, some scarab beetles, and some jade buddhas, but no Peacock's Eye... I reminded them to consult their journal, which gave a clue that said, "The dragon is the key to your dreams." The older boys figured it out for the younger ones. On a tree branch I hung a dragon directly over a buried treasure box. They dug and dug and got really dirty until they finally uncovered it. They were so excited that they reached in and grabbed handfuls of stuff before they realized it was full of bugs also. I put jewels I bought from Amazon and chinese coins and the peacock's eye I found in the ethnic part of town on Harwin Street in the treasure box. Victory! Happy treasure hunters with their prize! And one epic day for this little adventurer!

This good-looking fellow just turned nine years-old. If you think he looks charming in his pictures, you should see him in action. Spencer is outgoing, cheerful, and highly charismatic. These qualities naturally draw others to him, and he is happy to assume a role of leadership among his peers. He has demonstrated an increased measure of maturity at home as well. Now, don't get me wrong. He can still be quite spastic and silly at times. I do not think he will ever outgrow his tendency to be an attention commanding personality, but he has developed an increased responsible and thoughtful nature, too. He's bright and talented, with a wide range of interests in academics, sports, and the arts. While he has gotten much better about finishing books that he has started reading, creative writing still remains to be one of his greatest strengths. He is quite the storyteller and writes with fantastic expression. I could go on and on (it's easy to get carried away when you're a mother), and it would be extremely difficult to pinpoint just what I love most about Spencer. I can say I really enjoy that he still consistently requests that I sing him a song every night at bedtime. For all his growing and maturing, that is the thing he does that reminds me that he truly is, and always will be, my little boy. Watching his year-in-review birthday video, however, reminds me how quickly that "little boy" is growing up. See what I mean: An Indiana Jones Water Party I decided to allow the boys to do friend birthday parties this year, and Spencer requested an Indiana Jones themed water party. I had found some great ideas via Pinterest and especially loved the invitations described on this post. I ordered the suggested book from Amazon, but while awaiting the delivery, I made some "save the date" movie posters (thanks to the magic of Photoshop) to give to each of the party guests. The posters were really fun, and could have stood alone, but I was absolutely giddy at how cool the lost journal invitations turned out. Party favors consisted of a hat for each child and a felt satchel. I found the hats at Deseret Book. I admit I felt a little obnoxious wiping out the store's complete inventory of pioneer trek hats, but at $4.95 a piece, I couldn't pass them up. The satchels were made of felt and I sewed them the night before the party using the pattern idea I found on this website. Inside the satchel, there was a prescription bottle filled with M&Ms and labeled as a poison antidote, to be consumed after one of the party games. Once the guests arrived, Spencer opened his gifts before we played water games. I love how excited he was about receiving this box of Reese's Pieces candies. We headed outside to play a number of games that included water balloon grenades and water blow darts (wet Q-tips shot through straws). I got the ideas from this other party, including the idea for the poison antidote. The children were then given an "archaeological challenge" to see who could find and collect the most darts and grenade "shrapnel." Once that task was accomplished, they were allowed to slip 'n slide away from the giant boulder. The water games were so simple, yet they turned out to be so much fun. Even Jason got involved and quickly became the target for all the blow darts and water grenades. When the lawn was sufficiently saturated and the grass completely matted down, we all came in for cake and ice-cream. Spencer had an Indiana Jones birthday cake some years ago, but this time he really wanted a giant boulder for a cake. A boulder? Really? That's it? I tried to make it a little more interesting by adding a fondant figured Indiana Jones, but I laugh when I see the attempt. It turned out looking a little less like Harrison Ford and a little more like George Lucas, in my opinion. It must be the hair. Well, as most parties tend to do , this one turned out to be a really great time. It was quite a treat to entertain this cute group of children for an hour and a half. Spencer's Birthday Breakfast at Home Spencer's party was nearly a week before his actual birthday, and we were going to be at a family reunion on that day, too, so we let him have his breakfast of choice on the morning before we left for our trip. He wanted french toast on homemade bread. He got it. After he ate, we let him open his gifts from our family. Spencer's Birthday Breakfast at Red Cedar Lodge On Spencer's birthday, we were in southern Utah staying in a cabin with extended family. My brother Lance made a Mickey Mouse shaped pancake just for Spencer for his breakfast. Wasn't that so sweet! Unfortunately, Spencer became sick and had some awful-looking sores quickly develop on his legs, accompanied by a spotty rash that had cropped up all over. He was running a fever as well, so Jason and I decided to "medically evacuate" him in attempts to make the three and a half-hour drive back to Springville to catch our pediatrician before the clinic closed for the weekend. It turned out he had impetigo and hand, foot, and mouth disease. What a wonderful birthday surprise (drip sarcasm)! Spencer's Birthday Dinner When the illness was finally "at bay" we took Spencer out to his favorite restaurant for his annual birthday dinner. He chose Pizza Pie Cafe. Wow! We had BabyBoy's 6th birthday party yesterday and it was a blast! The weather was not so hot...it poured down rain for the first hour or so and sprinkled the rest of the time. Of course, the sun did make an appearance...just as all the parents were coming to pick their kids up! I had tons of fun planning this party. BabyBoy originally wanted a Lego Indiana Jones party. I finally managed to convince him that 14 boys sitting around a table fighting over legos for two hours might not be that much fun. So, we planned a super fun afternoon filled with action. I dug through the cobwebs of my old stationery stash and made these invitations: Front Back Basically, I took an image I got from googling "Indiana Jones" and copied and pasted it into the stationery program that I use. I stretched it to fit the size card I wanted to make. I added the text box using the Fedora Font. I then printed these out and burned the edges and glued them to a cardstock backing. For the reverse side, I used scrapbooking paper that looked like an old map. I printed the text onto the paper, burned the edges again, and taped them to the other side of the cardstock. They were really very easy to make and ended up looking pretty cool! Our friend Andrew agreed to dress up as Indiana Jones for the party. I knew he would be perfect. He's a "semi-retired" high school principal who is now a stay at home Dad to Jack, 8, and twins Alice and Clara, 4. He's totally creative and over the top and he loves to get into characters and mess around with the kids. We went to Disney with them a couple years ago and I swear he had more fun than the kids. As the children arrived (running inside to avoid the freaking monsoon that was outside) we sent them to the basement. They hung out there watching the first Indiana Jones movie while we waited for Andrew and his wife Christy and their kids. And waited, and waited. It was really only about 15 minutes but it seemed like a lifetime with 12 little boys, one hyper ass little girl (that would be my sweet BabyGirl) and four grandparents trying to corral them all. Finally, Andrew arrived. And he didn't disappoint! I started the Indiana Jones theme song on the boombox and he came bounding down the basement steps with whip in hand. It was hilarious. He explained to the kids that Belloq, his nemesis, had stolen his treasure and he needed their help to get it back. If they were successful in their search for the treasure, they would get to share it with him. He passed out the first clue to the kids: I then passed out some little shoulder satchels that I found at the Dollar Tree. Each child got a bag to put their clues in and to fill with treasure at the end. We headed to the Mummy Gallery (also known as the garage) and wrapped the kids up like mummies. It was so funny. They did require a lot of grown up help, so this might be an activity for older kids. Inside their toilet paper rolls they found their next clue: They headed out to the Snake Pit (our playset draped in fisherman's netting with snakes and clues scattered about) There they found their next clue: They headed out to Crocodile Creek (a babypool filled with water and random dirt and reeds. We put the clues inside ziploc bags and weighed them down with river rocks. We also had some rubber crocs and turtles in the water). I had kind of expected the kids to reach INTO the pool but as it turns out they all just jumped right in! They fished through the water to find their next clue: They headed over to a table we had set up with Chilled Monkey Brains (cold jello), Beetle Guts (cold spaghetti) and Eyeball Soup (grapes). They had to reach their hands into the boxes and feel around for clues. Too funny. They all loved the jello. I should say, they loved flinging that jello at one another. The girls were totally grossed out. Inside the boxes of "food" they found their last clue: They headed to the Airport Hangar (the garage) to find the treasure. Andrew (Indy) had helped them all throughout the treasure hunt and was there with the treasure. He did this elaborate skit about booby traps and spirits and then finally unveiled the treasure box. It was a big wooden box that I use in the basement to store my workout videos. We had just turned it upside down and I taped some pictures of old travel stickers on it as well as the Property of Indiana Jones label. It looked really cool. We then lifted up the box to reveal a huge pot of candy. Of course, at that point all hell broke loose and the kids dove on top of the pot. We had to pry them off and dump the candy all over the floor. I had to drop the camera to break up the kids...thus no pictures of the candy. Oh, well. You've seen one wild swarm of sugar dependent kids diving carelessly for a pile of candy, you've seen them all. After the kids filled up their little sacks with candy we did the cake and ice cream thing. Andrew sung Happy Birthday to the tune of the Indiana Jones theme music, which we'd had playing all during the party. The cake was originally an Army cake from Ukrops. They have the best cakes. Unfortunately, they didn't have an Indiana Jones theme cake. So, I just ordered the Army cake, took off the plastic tank, and added BabyBoy's Indiana Jones truck dragging Indy behind it. Big hit. One of the most adorable parts of the party was BabyBoy's friend Brody. He actually thought Andrew was the REAL Indiana Jones. He stuck to him like glue throughout the entire party. Asked for his autograph (which he got on the back of a party plate) and asked "Indy" to tell him about some of his "adventwars". It was so, so adorable. And here we have the whole crew: The favor bags were pretty basic: Indiana Jones coloring books from the Dollar Tree, a plastic compass, a chinese yo yo made to look like an Indiana Jones whip and some plastic snakes. We had also given each kid a paper fedora at the beginning of the party. They were pretty flimsy, so if you're planning a party like this I would definitely forego the hats. Overall, it was a great party. Putting the clues together was not difficult; it took me about an hour the morning of and then my stepmom helped me roll them up and put them in the plastic bags, etc. The background of the clues was a graphic I found by googling "old maps". I just added a text box on top of it in a font that's part of an old scrapbooking program I have. BabyBoy got tons of neat gifts. I'm pretty sure his favorite is the Nintendo DS Lite that he got from my father in law and stepmother in law. He got the Lego Indiana Jones game and the Lego Star Wars game. He totally wasn't expecting it but had been begging for one for months. So far, he's cleaned his room, his sister's room and the playroom in an effort to earn "free time" on top of the one hour per day I've allowed him to play the thing. This is working out pretty well for me so far! I wonder if he'll do windows?

Here were the cupcakes from my 6 yr old's birthday in December (yes, I am very behind!) maps, crystal skull, hats, whips, snakes... The Crystal Skull More hats, snakes, coins, flowers for the girls He wanted Indiana Jones (of course) so we all pitched in to make little fondant toppers. The hats and whips (all brown things) we made from warming Tootsie Rolls in the microwave for about 6 seconds then shaping. The rest was regular fondant that we painted with petal dust or food markers. The cake was just Devil's Food with chocolate buttercream icing. I sprinkled crushed Oreos on top to make "dirt." It was fun and I think they came out really cute!
