Introduction We are so excited to collaborate with Twinspirational for a how to guide on dressing for Indian wedding celebrations. Indian weddings are vibrant celebrations of love, tradition and culture. For first-time guests, navigating the multitude of ceremonies and selecting the perfect Indian wedding guest dresses and shoes can be a daunting task. However, fear not! We will help you make a stylish statement with your outfit choices while embracing the rich cultural significance of Indian weddings. Best of all, we’ve paired each outfit with Ally Shoes for the perfect blend of comfort and style. Different Types of traditional Indian outfits for ladies The Sari: The sari is the most iconic piece of Indian women’s apparel. It's a long, flowing fabric that can be draped over the body in various styles, either from the front or the back. Typically worn by older women, like Indian moms and aunties, the sari offers endless possibilities for sleeves and necklines—short sleeves, long sleeves, sleeveless, or even one shoulder. Younger women can wear them too, but tying a sari can be tricky if you're not familiar with the technique. Don't be afraid to ask an Indian auntie to help you fix your sari! Bring a few safety pins and head to the ladies room together—they'll help you pin it just right. Saris can be worn to almost any wedding event: Mehndi Party, Sangeet, Wedding Ceremony, or Reception. You can even wear a simple yellow sari for the Haldi ceremony. The Shalwar Kameez: The Shalwar Kameez is a classic choice known for its elegance and comfort. This outfit consists of a long tunic (kameez) paired with loose-fitting pants (shalwar) and a matching scarf (dupatta). It’s a versatile option that can range from simple and casual to intricately embroidered and formal. Shalwar Kameez suits are perfect for various wedding events, including the Mehndi Party, Sangeet, and even the Wedding Ceremony. For a more festive look, choose fabrics like silk or chiffon and embellish with embroidery or sequins. The dupatta can be draped over the shoulder or around the head, adding a graceful touch. If you’re unsure about draping the dupatta, don’t hesitate to ask for help or use safety pins to keep it in place. The Lehenga: The lehenga is a stunning three-piece ensemble that includes a blouse (choli), a long, flowy skirt (lehenga), and a dupatta (scarf). The blouse can range from simple to intricately embellished, usually fitting at the mid-torso to reveal a bit of midriff. The skirt is often lavishly decorated and can be quite heavy due to the embellishments. The dupatta can be draped in numerous ways, such as over one shoulder, across both shoulders, or even around the head. Draping techniques differ in North vs. South India, and you can change up how you drape anytime—so have fun with it! Like a sari, draping a dupatta can be tricky, so bring safety pins and ask an Indian auntie to help you pin it perfectly. Lehengas are versatile and can be worn to the Mehndi Party, Sangeet, Wedding Ceremony, or Reception, depending on the level of embroidery and embellishment. Lighter lehengas are great for the Mehndi and the Sangeet, while heavier ones are perfect for weddings and receptions. Just avoid wearing one at a Haldi, where things can get a bit messy! The Sharara Suit: The Sharara Suit is a fabulous choice for a lively and elegant look. This outfit consists of a long top (kurta) paired with wide-legged pants (sharara) and a matching scarf (dupatta). The sharara pants are usually embellished and flowy, giving a dramatic and graceful appearance. The kurta can vary from simple to heavily embroidered, and the dupatta can be draped in multiple styles—over the shoulder, around the neck, or even across the arms. The Sharara Suit is a fantastic option for various wedding functions, including Mehndi Parties, Sangeets, and Wedding Ceremonies. It’s a great choice if you want to make a statement while staying comfortable and stylish. The Anarkali: The Anarkali is a regal and elegant option, typically consisting of a long, flowy top (kurta), fitted pants (churidaar), and a scarf (dupatta). Anarkali gowns might include just the kurta and the scarf. The Anarkali is easier to wear than a sari because you don't have to worry about draping. The kurta itself is beautifully tailored and flares out, giving it a gown-like appearance. This outfit can be adorned with intricate embroidery, sequins, and other embellishments, making it suitable for any wedding event: Mehndi Party, Sangeet, Wedding Ceremony, or Reception. It’s particularly convenient for guests who prefer a hassle-free yet glamorous option. And yes, you can don a simple yellow Anarkali for the Haldi ceremony too! The Indian Gown: The Indian Gown is more of an Indo-Western modern dress, combining traditional elements with a contemporary twist. These gowns are often floor-length and can be simple or grand, featuring intricate embroidery, sequins, and other embellishments. They are perfect for making a grand entrance at the Reception or even the Wedding Ceremony. Indian Gowns offer a sophisticated and modern look while still honoring traditional aesthetics. They are very easy to wear, providing a chic option without the need for complicated draping. Choose a gown with vibrant colors or rich fabrics to match the festive atmosphere. Different ceremonies and guest outfit ideas for each event When selecting Indian wedding guest dresses for different ceremonies, it’s important to consider the specific customs and traditions associated with each event. So, get ready to immerse yourself in the beauty of Indian culture and make a lasting impression with your Indian wedding guest dresses. Yellow for the Haldi ceremony Haldi, a pre-wedding ritual in Indian weddings, is a joyous event where turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom to bless them with prosperity and ward off evil. Flowy and comfortable outfits like kurta sets or light gowns are perfect for this festive event, allowing us to move freely as we partake in the joyful rituals. Pairing our ensembles with the Sassy Saffron Suede Pumps added a modern touch to our traditional attire, ensuring we looked effortlessly chic. As this vibrant event approached, we knew it was time to henna-up our wardrobe with playful colors and patterns that capture the joy of the occasion. You can go traditional with a bright and flowy Anarkali suit or opt for a modern gown. We chose a one-shoulder orange and gold gown and paired it with the classic Ally Black Leather Pumps for a stunning look. For the Sangeet, we were ready to groove in style. This lively event called for outfits that were both elegant and dynamic, perfect for showing off our moves on the dance floor. We chose an embroidered dress paired with an orange purse and statement earrings for that extra sparkle. We paired the Bossy Beige Leather Pumps with a turquoise, beiget, orange and gold mini-gown. This is when traditional customs and rituals take center stage, and our attire must reflect the solemnity and grandeur of the occasion. We wore a stunning pink floral lehenga adorned with intricate embroidery and embellishments to exude elegance and grace and paired our Indian wedding guest dresses with the Blissful Blush Suede Pumps. Saris are also a fantastic option to consider for this occasion. Whether it’s a swift transition or a split between a morning wedding and an evening reception, this is your chance to dazzle with sophistication and style. Our Scarlet Embossed Leather Pumps kept us comfortable and ready to dance the night away. Brides often wear vibrant reds during the Wedding Ceremony, making these shoes also a perfect fit for the bride as well. Source: ALLY Shoes Scarlet Embossed Leather Classic Pump Other Helpful Tips For the wedding ceremony, brides often dazzle in stunning red saris or lehengas, so it is best to avoid stealing the red spotlight. That said, red is acceptable for the reception after the ceremony, as the bride will change to a different outfit. And remember, black is a no-go, as it's considered inauspicious for such joyous occasions. Avoid white since this color is normally worn at funerals. These traditional outfits not only reflect the joy and richness of Indian culture but also allow you to express your unique style at every wedding event. So go ahead, mix and match, and make a splash with your vibrant, elegant, and fun choices! Always remember for a memorable fashion statement at any Indian wedding event, embrace bold colors, intricate patterns, and eye-catching accessories. Don’t hesitate to experiment with vibrant hues like rich blues, deep purples, or striking reds. Add statement earrings, a delicate tikka, or a stack of colorful bangles to elevate your look and showcase your personal style. Mix traditional elements such as a beautifully draped sari or an elegant lehenga with contemporary trends like modern cuts or fusion styles. This fusion creates a unique and unforgettable outfit that reflects the spirit of the occasion.
