There is a lot of Ted Harrison love at the school these days. Both Grades 2 and 3 are completing art projects based on his work. Ted Harrison is a well known Canadian artist famous for his use of line and color in his landscape paintings around his beloved Yukon home. This is an easy art project based on his work. MATERIALS REQUIRED: - watercolor paper or heavy weight sketch paper - watercolor, tempera, or acrylic paints - black paper - glue - scissors - reference photos (there are lots of images of Ted Harrison's work online) - oil pastels or wax crayons I like to tape off my paper and then draw in your line design. You want to discuss the way Ted Harrison uses a strong line to show shape or contour of the landscape, how the line is just as important as the color. With younger kids you may want to use pastels or wax crayons and draw those heavy lines. I'm using crayon here and they resist the paint allowing you to keep those heavy lines, oil pastels work even better. Start painting. It's good to start with the lightest colors first and then work your way to the darkest. Although the crayon or pastel resists the paint you still want the kids to stay within the lines if the can so you have those separate areas of deep color. With older kids you can get them to conserve that white line. When painting with watercolors you'll want to leave some space between the colors any way so they don't mix together before drying. Another option is to try the stained glass method. I've mixed a couple of squirts of acrylic paint into a bottle of white school glue. I then use this to mark my heavy lines, lie flat and let dry. (about 12 hrs.) Once the glue is dry paint in your strong color. They glue helps to corral the paint in each area for easier painting. Now you can add an Inukshuk if you wish. Cut out individual stones out of black paper. Then glue down on top of your painting. Place a sheet of wax paper on top and rest a heavy book on top of that to help it dry flat. The paintings also look great just on their own. Here is some work by Grade 2. They used their twistables for this and it turned out terrific but I think they are ready to try the painting option. I don't usually write stories to go along with my pictures but in this case the story is worth telling. Every winter in March for the past 30 years myself and three of my friends spend 4 or 5 days fishing and winter camping in Lake Superior Provincial Park. These days my friends fish and I look for photo opportunities. Last week was our annual trip. Temperatures were below normal for this time of year being below minus 20 C every night with a strong north wind every day. On the second day I headed off by myself to find something worth photographing. I traveled down a narrow bay through a narrows that opened up into a series of small ponds. I walked to the second small pond and decided to stop and take a break. I drag a small sleigh with my photo equipment and a small chair to rest on. I started to pull the bungy cords off the sleigh when I caught a movement out of the corner of my eye. Approaching me was this small fox. He walked over to me and sat down next to the sleigh. I was a little dumbfounded as I have rarely had wild animals approach me. Usually it’s the other way around and ends with them trying to get away as fast as possible. He (male Fox) came over to the sleigh and picked up the bungy cord I had just detached from the sleigh and carried it up the bank of the pond a short way and sniffed it over before deciding it was not good to eat. He then came back and started tugging on my jacket which was still attached to the sleigh. He soon gave up on that and after giving the entire sleigh a good inspection decided there was nothing worth the effort on the sleigh so he went up the bank of the pond to the edge of the bush and laid down about 15 ft away from me. For the next while I photographed and observed him as he rested in the sun. After about an hour I decided to move on and packed up the sleigh to head back to the campsite. I left with the fox still on the bank of the pond resting and he lifted his head and watched me leave on my trail in. When I traveled about 100 meters across the pond I stopped and turned around and saw that the fox was following me about 50 meters behind. I reached the other side of the pond and stopped and waited for the fox to catch up which he did and he promptly tried to tug my jacket off the sleigh. I headed off again and the fox veered off into the bush. I got out onto the big lake following my trail in, and traveled a few hundred yards across a large bay and came to the opposite end of an island we were camped on. I turned around and there was the fox again following on my trail. The fox then cut up into the bush of the island and we traveled together, me on the lake and him just inside the bush of the island as I could see him walking along keeping pace with me. I came around the corner of the island where our campsite was and there was the fox coming out of the bush just in front of our campsite. The fox inspected the campsite while I tried to stay ahead of him, hiding anything that he could cause trouble with like our food. After about 10 min he left. Later that evening my friends came back to camp with several Lake Trout and some Brook Trout they had caught during the day. The fox reappeared shortly before dark and finally got what he had been looking for I think, something to eat. My friends were cleaning their fish on the ice and the fox spent half an hour picking up the remains and eating some and caching the rest. We watched him till dark and the image I will always remember from this encounter will be the one of him playfully chasing little pieces of snow that the wind was blowing across the lake in the falling light and pouncing on them like a cat with a ball of yarn. Life was good. www.lakesuperiorpark.ca/ Just as a post script I'd like to add a comment here and I should have done this before. This is a wild animal and while it is extremely "cute", it is still very much wild and I do not condone feeding wild animals. I have said this before in response to some negative feedback that it is never a good idea to feed wild animals and always keep your distance as they can be upredictable. In this case the fox was being opportunistic and cleaning up the fish remains while my friends were cleaning their fish. This is more of an insight into man and animal relationships that go back thousands of years and while this animal can be seen as cute which it certainly is, no argument there, it is still very much a wild animal. Those animals that survive are the ones that seize the opportunity as this fox did. Northern Ontario Canada is a very hash place in the winter time. There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds. They should make about 5 folds and then using a ruler go over the fold lines with a sharpie. Looking at the lines on their page and turning it around from different sides they should see the suggestion of a face and they can begin sketching. I'm going to show them how to use the lines to begin the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, chin etc... When they have a face they like they should go over it with sharpie. Now they can use watercolor to finish the portrait. I am going to emphasize complementary colors which is another way to force them to be more abstract, but also something Picasso did in his paintings. Student Work I passed out a copy of this worksheet to help them think of different ways to make the features.

John and I had a fun day in the studio recently. We both wanted to do a bit of experimental mark-making, to explore new ideas. John is looking for inspiration for his printmaking and I thought it would be interesting to play with marks and compositions which could be the starting points of new drawings or which might possible translate into textiles. We gathered lots of tools and then made a few new ones, looking for anything which would make an unusual mark if dipped in paint: We decided to stick to black and white, so we could concentrate on marks and tone. I mixed up a tub of black acrylic and got out some Platignum Calligraphers Black Ink too (a good non-waterproof ink, as it separates into pretty colours when wet, rather than just going grey). I found an oil bar and some liquin too, which is great for smearing not just oil bars but also oil pastels. Plus a Derwent Inktense block and grater (tiny gratings can be scattered onto wet paper or sprayed with water for speckled effects). We both put on latex gloves and set-to on a big piece of cartridge paper each. It was such fun - no pressure to make something which 'works', just pure experimentation. This was my first sheet: I am particularly interested in randomness, so many of the new tools we made were designed to make the marks more hard to control. To add to the random element, we both cut up our sheets into equal pieces, using pre-decided measurements, not aesthetic judgement to create the sections: I like the way it changes things when you isolate a section. The emphasis on the various elements changes, because of the enforced edges, and you start to get interesting things happening with composition. On my 2nd sheet, I started with some large marks in a grey emulsion, to create a new element of contrast. I made a new tool too - a piece of corrugated card to print with. You can see the marks top right: I cut this one into squares. As the paper's dimensions didn't divide exactly into squares, this allowed me a slight element of judgement, as I could move the composition of any square a centimetre or two to the left or right. I then selected the best 6 squares from the 9 created. These are my favourites. It's surprising how well they work just as they are, but you can also see how they could be taken into print or textiles. It would be fun trying to find ways to reinterpret the marks and tones in the different medium. I can highly recommend this as a very enjoyable way of exploring new techniques and getting new inspiration. The randomness is important though, as a way of forcing you not to be too controlling and letting unexpected things happen. John did some experiments using blotting paper, which he tore into strips. Even the offcuts were interesting, which I saved as we were clearing up. The beautiful blue is the Platignum ink: Even my offcuts were quite interesting: Have a go. Even before we got drawing, it was good fun making the tools from odds and ends we found around the studio, taping them to bits of stick and then finding out what marks they made.
