This week in Reader's Workshop, we are continuing our study of characterization. We want to understand how characters think, feel and change during a story. This will help us understand what we read. Below are a few examples of what we are working on during class! Our goal is to understand what a character looks like on the inside and the outside. Before writing about characters in a book, we wrote about ourselves! Reader's Workshop focus wall! We studied many characters in our favorite stories, including Molly Lou Melon, and Camilla Cream from "A Bad Case of Stripes". We focused on what the characters looked like on the inside and the outside. Today, our focus was about how characters change in a story. We read about "Lilly" from "Julius, The Baby of the World" by Kevin Henkes The students filled out a response sheet about how their characters changed during the course of their reading.
I'm linking up with Jivey for this week's Workshop Wednesday: Response to Literature! When I take reading groups, we spend a lot of time discussing the story (as much discussing a first grader can handle anyway!). I always remind them what good readers do and I model it for them. For example, I'll say a good reader thinks about what the author wanted us to learn by reading this story. Then I'll pick a story we've previously read and have say I think so and so wanted us to learn blah, blah. After, I ask the kids to think back and see what the story we're working on is about. I do this for setting, main idea, pretty much everything! I also have a little graphic organizer flip chart that I use in my groups. It's part of our Reading Street reading program and can be written on with Expo markers. It has a page for character, plot, beginning, middle and end of a story, and lots more. Many times, I will use these for the kids to show their understanding of the characters, setting, and the stories problem. They especially love the part where they have to answer how they would solve the problem in the story. :) My kids do a lot of written responses in their writing journals as well. Often times, I'll give them a sentence or question to get the started. For example, our first unit is about pets, so their journal prompts may be about how they would take care of a pet, their favorite type of pet, or if they could have any pet, what would it be....things that activate prior knowledge or make them think a little more about the topics we are reading about. :) How do your kids respond to literature? :) One more thing before I take a break for dinner!! Here's a little something special I made for my classroom this weekend! I found the idea on Pinterest (surprise, surprise!). I think it came out pretty good!! I brought it to school on Monday and my kids absolutely LOVED it!! Lately they've been feeling sad because I've been doing special "second grade" things with them and they don't want to leave first grade. I don't want them to go either! But I told them whenever they're feeling sad, they can look at this and remember what a super bunch of friends they have! :) Happy Wednesday!
As teachers, we used data all of the time. We use data to plan our lessons, to form our groups and to evaluate our students. This is the first year, I've given my students the responsibility of making choices in our math workshop based on their data. I found this picture on Pinterest and decided to do the same thing. Link to My Teacher Friend's Blog Post about Math Benchmark Data {Taking a very deep breath.} Here is our data from after the first benchmark math test, given some time in December. No judging. The chart isn't about judging. The chart is about staying focused on our goals and working together to achieve them. I'm sure some of you have immediate reactions to this information being so SO public. I was a bit worried about that also. I was worried that some of my students would feel horrible seeing their names under "I need help do to this." But that wasn't the case. When I showed them the chart, (whose name is stolen from The Book Whisperer), I explained what each part meant and how they should use it. Instead of being depressed or paralyzed, I found the students to be VERY motivated to more out of the "help" category and toward the "expert" category. Looking back at My Teacher Friend's post, I am using the same percentages as she is, but rather than writing 0-59% I wrote "I need help to do this." For 60-84%, the students are under "I can do this most of the time." And for 85% and above, the students are "experts." Along the left side, I used I can statements written from the Common Core Standards. For this benchmark, the students were expected to add and subtract decimals to the hundredths, multiply whole numbers using the traditional algorithm and divide whole numbers using the traditional algorithm. One quick glance at this chart can tell you exactly what I wanted to review first. And the students were able to use this data also when I made these: I love binders for center activities. In our school, we use the EnVisions Math Program. I decided to abandon their games and instead have the kids chose their own task cards based on their data. They can also use the task cards in our small group tutoring program or if they finish work early. Each one of the "I Can" statements has a set of task cards for the kids. The sets are fairly small, just 6 cards with the answer cards in the baggie, so the students can self check their work. They look at the data chart, find their name in one of the categories and they self select the task cards. They can also use the chart during our workshop to locate an expert to help them if I'm busy with a small group. Once they finish the task cards (for one standard) and check their work, they can request an assessment. Oh yes. They REQUEST assessments. I bought Miss Nannini's Standards Based Common Core Assessments for Fifth Grade to use after the students complete their task cards. They complete the assessments and I mark them right away. If they score into the next level on the chart, they get to move their sticky notes. They love it. Here you can see how many sticky notes have moved from the "I need help" category to the "I can do this" and even all the way to expert! I have several students who have really put a tremendous effort into moving all of their sticky notes into "expert." Those little pink stickies really stand out when they make it to expert! THIS is what the data chart is about. It's about celebrating student achievement, no matter where our students begin. I don't want to pretend I have this all figured out, because I don't. I've found one way to help my kids focus their efforts in math workshop. One in which we ALL share the data and the responsibility. Tell me, is your data public?

Establishing consistent accountability when using the workshop approach to teaching and learning may seem daunting at first. After all, your students are producing, and consuming an immense amount of content during workshop on a daily basis…far more than you can (and want) to grade. The good news is, you don’t have to grade every activity. I know what you’re thinking…”If I stop grading every single thing…there won’t be enough accountability.” The reality is, there are other far more efficient ways to establish accountability and boost meaningful student growth. One of these ways is routine student self-reflection. If you’re ready to bring more student reflection to your classroom, these tips can help you establish routines that maintain consistent accountability in your workshop classroom. Creating Rubrics Together A foundational rubric will help you and your students create a common language that can make ongoing assessment more meaningful and fluid in your classroom. Begin by pulling the rubric your district requires you to use, or write a rubric that communicates your parameters for each level of understanding in your classroom. Rewrite this rubric in your own student-friendly language so you can share these parameters with your class. Making a slide or poster for each level on your rubric so it is easier for students to digest may be helpful. Set aside time in your schedule each day to create a one-week series of work sessions when you and your students can rewrite the rubric again as a class using language that is actually produced by your students. You may opt to: Have all slides/posters on display simultaneously while students rotate to stations where they work in groups to make meaning of each level of understanding. Students can then write their interpretations on the slides/posters, which can be aggregated on the final day. Display one slide/poster each day and host a class conversation that facilitates meaning-making for each level of understanding. Record student ideas as you work toward a common, and final definition for each level of understanding. At the end of these series of work sessions, you and your students will have a rubric that is unpacked by them, rewritten by them, and ready to be used by them. Working together as a class to write a final rubric that will be adopted as the foundation makes conversations about assessments more meaningful and productive. Rubric Drawers Once your class rubric is created, you can make it easy for students to consistently reflect on their work by submitting any assignments to “rubric drawers” that are marked with the definitions for each level of understanding. This built-in practice of self-reflection builds students’ intrinsic motivation to reach higher and produce quality work. If you notice your students have a tendency to submit work to the “wrong” drawer, this signals they need a follow up lesson on the type of work quality required to achieve each level of understanding. Using exemplars (examples of each level of understanding from a particular subject area or activity) can help students build a stronger definition for what work quality looks like. As students build their ability to accurately assess themselves, you can also have them attach a short note of justification for their self-scoring. This will provide insight about any misconceptions they may have about their work or the rubric levels your class has written. If you want to track the score students give themselves on an activity, provide a special pen or stamp that allows them to mark their score before placing it in the drawer. In addition, you can have students submit work with the help of a partner. Once an activity is complete, a student can briefly confer with their assigned partner to get feedback, and make a decision about which drawer a piece should be submitted. This provides an additional layer of motivation for students to reach higher, as they know a peer will be reviewing their work quality. Reflection Letters Another routine that can boost student growth through self-assessment is the writing of reflection letters on a routine basis. Students thrive when they know they have an important role in their assessment process, and will be eager to read your response. Begin by creating a prompt that asks students to reflect specifically on different areas of the assignment that will support their goal setting and goal progress. Also direct students to refer to their rubric to self-assess, and provide justification for their assessment as part of their reflection process. This routine will remind students the importance of keeping the rubric in mind as they complete their work each week, which will foster stronger performance. Set aside time to read these reflection letters and write brief responses which may include your own score using the same rubric, and comments that support your scoring. This written dialogue further emphasizes the value you place on student work and growth. If you find the need to differentiate this letter writing process to support the unique needs of students in your classroom. Here are some differentiation ideas: Have students dictate as you record their reflection. Have students circle their score on a rubric and mark evidence with color-coding or sticky notes. Provide sentence frames to scaffold independence. Self Assessment & Reflection In Your Classroom Ready to give self-reflection a try in your own classroom? I like to spend a couple weeks each year teaching my students about poetry. We do a number of fun activities in addition to reading and writing different poems. We have a poetry battle, rank poetry, make a poetry journal, and much more! Here is a look into my poetry unit.... To kick off my poetry unit I have my students each complete this KWL Chart about Poetry. We then discuss what poetry is, what a poet's purpose is, what poems can have, etc. I use and display these posters during my unit! Over the years I have found poems that are great for young children to listen to. Instead of having multiple books that I have to search through to find the poem I want to read, I have typed the poems on individual pages and compiled them together. Each day I choose two different poems to read to my class. After reading the two poems, my students each vote on which poem they liked the best. We fill in the Poetry Battle bracket together. By the end of my poetry unit my class has found their all-time favorite poem (which is usually Brod Bager's poem Booger Love)! I also like for my students to fill out the Ranking Poetry page after listening to a poem. I like for them to fill these out after listening to poems that have the different parts of figurative language in them that we have learned about. Here are some of the different figurative language topics that I cover during my poetry unit. Each poster has the term, definition, and example. Our only exception for accepting returns are for items damaged in transit, which have immediately been reported to us or if an item is deemed faulty in any way. Whats Included 100% Recyclable What's included in the parcel...? Floating Shelf Brackets - Two solid steel concealed fixing rods are included. (These fixings are only suitable for solid walls.) The 130cm & 140cm lengths will be supplied with three rods per shelf for extra strength. Wall Plugs - 10mm Solid wall plugs are supplied. (Unfortunately we do not supply plasterboard wall plugs). Fitting Instructions - Enclosed are our detailed instructions on how to install the shelf. Each shelf can hold up to 35kg. Fixings Our Fixings Floating Brackets Our floating shelf fixings are only suitable for solid walls. Every floating shelf comes with predrilled holes in the back of the shelf (13mm Diameter). Before leaving our workshop every shelf is hand drilled & checked, allowing us to make sure the floating rods are a secure snug fit. The Concealed fixings are 12mm Diameter & 120mm Length. The screw section for the wall is 65mm Length. All our Floating fixing rods are designed with an offset CAM. This means there is 10mm of adjustment on the concealed rod, this allows you to get the shelf absolutely plum during installation. To adjust the floating rod, use a 10mm spanner to spin the rod. We only use FSC Certified Northern Scandinavian Pine from 100% sustainably managed forests. Giving you the confidence you are buying a completely sustainable wooden product. We hand pick every length of timber, to preserve as many rustic characteristics as possible. This includes unique grain patterns, saw marks, splits & sanded edges which has now become our trademark style. The application of wax intensifies the grain pattern whilst protecting the timber with a water resistant finish. There is a wide range of 7 wax finishes to choose from. Enter the Dino kingdom and ROAR with our Dinosaur Wooden Decor. Made from 4mm poplar wood and made to order in house in our workshop. A great piece to hang on a wall or perched on a shelf and perfect for a Dinosaur themed bedroom. Size of letters: This is the height of each letter. The width of the letters can vary but if you would like to know the width, please email us with the desired name and height and we can work this out for you. Hanging Advise: For our display photos we use Command poster strips which we cut to small squares to hang our signs. Other strips or hooks will work just as well.
