My Grandmother's Home in Cornwall

Baby - Recently, after all the fuss and bother over my grandchildren, my daughter told me I was a bad grandmother who didn’t love them. When I finally retired, I was swept up in mixed feelings—joy at ending my working years, but also unease at the unknown. Decades of routine vanished, and before me stretched an empty space I had to fill. Morning alarms, rushing to the office, urgent tasks—all gone in an instant. At first, I felt adrift. What was I supposed to do now? How should I shape my days? In those early weeks, I busied myself with chores: cleaning, cooking, sorting through old things. But soon, I realised endless tidying wasn’t what I’d dreamed of in retirement. A nagging voice whispered, *You must be useful, you mustn’t idle.* Yet I came to understand I had every right to rest, to tend to myself, without justifying it to anyone. Slowly, I sought out things that brought me joy. First, I remembered my love of reading. As a girl, I’d adored books, but work had stolen the time for them. My shelves brimmed with unread novels. Now, I could lose myself in stories, savouring each page without worrying over the clock. What bliss—lingering with a book, a cuppa in hand, curled in my favourite armchair. Then, I knew I had to mind my health. Years of rushing left their mark—aching joints, high blood pressure. At first, stepping outside without purpose felt strange. But I started with short morning walks. Step by step, day by day, I felt lightness return. My body isn’t young anymore, but with care, it can still hum with wellbeing. I found happiness in simple rituals: dawn strolls in the park, evening tea on the terrace, watching sunsets. Sometimes I just sit and listen to birdsong, drinking in the quiet. These moments taught me to find magic in the ordinary. Now, I try to fill each day with little pleasures—even tiny things give me strength to keep going. I’ve learned not to feel guilty for resting. Yes, my children sometimes say, *Mum, you’re doing nothing.* But I spent my whole life giving to family and work. Now, when I’ve earned my rest, why shouldn’t I simply *be*? You can’t live only for others—you’ll lose yourself. It doesn’t mean I love them less, just that everyone deserves their own quiet hours. I’ve taken up new hobbies. Knitting, for instance—not out of need, but for the peace of it. Each stitch, each pattern, brings calm. When I finish a piece, I see that even now, I can create beauty with my hands. In time, I realised retirement isn’t an end—it’s a fresh chapter. A chance to find joy in … 📚 Don’t miss the next twist
