Stealing information can be just as lucrative--and destructive--as stealing anything else. Our look at the history of data theft touches on some of the major (or just really interesting) crimes in history. The father of the American Industrial Revolution? A glorified data thief. That tea you're drinking (let's say just for the duration of this sentence, you are drinking tea)? That's a stolen secret recipe, the theft of which involved a Scotsman dressed up in "traditional mandarin garb." And if you're a PlayStation Network user or a Gawker commenter, you'll be familiar with some of the latter items on our list. And don't forget to check out the rest of Data Week, our exploration of all things data. Click to launch our guide to the biggest data thefts in history.
Long before recorded history, the cacao tree grew in Amazonia and was cultivated by Mesoamerican peoples. Cacao beans were prized goods -- considered divine when used in religious ceremonies, and so valuable as to be used as currency. Mesoamerican peoples cooked the cacao seeds, then crushed them into a soft paste. They mixed the paste with water and flavorful spices to make an unsweetened chocolate drink -- similar to very dark and bitter coffee. Centuries later, once the plant was introduced to Europeans, the scientific name of the cocoa tree was known as *Theobroma cacao*. Theobroma, in Latin, means “food of the gods”. The vintage cien-sucres coin is authentic, circulated currency. The coin was minted in 1997; though, with all Ecuadorian currency, it was replaced by the US Dollar in 2000. The coin is in gently-used condition. It is made of a bronze-plated steel center and a nickel-plated steel ring. It is 19.45mm in diameter (about the size of a US penny). The stone bead has a natural dark-brown color, to mimic a roasted cocoa bean. The rolo chain is made of stainless steel, silver-tone in color and 24 inches in length. -->>> Feel free to ask any questions - even the "silly" ones. I am here to help you! 💌 These are so handy. Great for when I’m just popping out- it happily fits my card, a bit of cash and a lip balm. 💝 Ideal for when you’re travelling- currency, a local travel card and hotel room card in one place. Even better if paired with a wristlet (shameless plug for other items in the shop). 🧵 I started sewing in June 2020 after receiving a sewing machine as a birthday gift. It started with making masks for my friends and family, which then grew to making fabric masks for businesses and for charity. As time wore on and masks were in less demand, I began sewing other small accessories. 💛 This shop is not for profit. After listing fees, postage and selling fees- any profit is given to the Phoenix Dog Rescue in Warrington. 🙏 Alas, cards, cash and lip balms not included. 💎 Everything is posted via standard Royal Mail post, it’s not tracked. More often than not, everything goes as planned and items arrive pretty quickly … however, there may be delays in the post so items may take a bit longer than I’d hope to get to you. Please let me know if you’ve not received your item after 14 days and I’ll do my best to help resolve things. ✉️

This pendent is made from 7000- 8000 year-old Bog Oak radiocarbon dated and certified. It comes with old Irish Penny Inlayed. Ireland changed its currency in 1971, issuing a whole set of new coins, Among them the penny, with a new reverse of a stylized bird. The reverse remained the harp. Irish bog-oak ranges in age from 3000 to 8000 years old. The Irish climate was warmer and drier at that time in our history. Oak trees grew profusely throughout the country. Then the climate changed to a wetter and damper era. The roots of the great oaks lost their grip in the soggy soil and fell to the ground. Over the following years vegetation covered the fallen trees. The tanic acid in the oak trees interacted with the decaying vegetation turning the oak black or darker brown and preserving it for posterity. This decaying vegetation forms today’s bogs in Ireland. As people cut the turf in the bogs the ancient oak is uncovered where it has lain for thousands of years. It is soft and pliable at first but as it is exposed to the air it becomes almost rock-hard. Before the advent of electricity in Ireland, our people found many uses for bog oak and bog deal. Slivers of it were lit to provide light in the little cottages while big beams were used for rafters and mantle-pieces. This bog oak pendant is the perfect gift for anyone with Irish heritage or for someone who resonates with the Celtic myths and traditions of the natural world. - 7000-800 year old native Irish Bog Oak - Old Irish Penny Inlayed - Beeswax finish that seals the wood & enhance its natural colour - Textured finish on both sides of the pendent - Pendant size: 40mm / 1 1/2" long and 24mm/ 31" wide - With a small copper bead - On a black 2mm waxed cotton cord - This pendent comes in a hessian gift bag. - Perfect gift for your loved one - Your necklace will come with a lovely card with information and location of where the bog oak came from. - I offer free International standard post Please note that the grain and colour of the wood may vary slightly from the pieces in the photograph as each piece is unique.
Framed piece of Kuba cut-pile Shoowa cloth dating from 1930s. This has been recently framed. Fabric size approximately 24" x 23" Kuba, Shoowa textiles from the Kuba kingdom (current day Democratic Republic of Congo) are among the most distinctive works of African art. The Kuba kingdom grew into a wealthy and powerful and wealthy confederation of different ethnic groups in the early 17th century. These fabrics are made from the leaf of the raffia tree- they are first hand cut and then strips of leaf are woven to make pieces of fabric, often called raffia cloth. They were generally woven by men, embroidered by women with no stitching visible on the back. Highly prized for their complex patterns, they are further embellished with tight tufting, leading to the nickname "Kasai velvet". There are several different groups of Kuba people, each having their own unique textiles. They were often traded as currency, and were the standard by which a family's wealth and status were judged. These cloths are not fragile. This item is Vintage, authentic and one of a kind. It has signs of wear and tear that do not in any way detract from the item. less

KUBA, SHOOWA TEXTILES, Democratic Republic of Congo 23x40" (59x100.5cm) The textiles of the Kuba kingdom are among the most distinctive and spectacular works of African art. Emerging in the early seventeenth century, the Kuba kingdom grew into a powerful and wealthy confederation of eighteen different ethnic groups located in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Using the leaf of the raffia tree, the Kuba people first hand cut, and then weave the strips of leaf to make pieces of fabric, often called raffia cloth. There are several different sub groups of the Kuba people. Each group has different and unique ways to make the fabric. Some make it thicker, longer, shorter, or with different patches. Each patch is symbolic and many times a piece has many different meanings. The true jewels of textile art are the Shoowa cut-pile cloths. Their complex interplay of geometric symbols, inventive rhythm and balance, uniquely individual designs and "velvet" surfaces created objects so mysteriously alluring the Kuba people traded them as currency. They were the standard by which a family's wealth and status were judged. These cloths were embroidered with no stitching visible on the back. They were sewn together for ceremonial dress and covered royal stools. As a sign of status and to provide for the afterlife they were buried with kings or those fortunate enough to own many. These cloths are not fragile. They can be pinned to a wall, framed, or even used as a fabric for clothing or upholstery. Folds or wrinkles can be removed with careful misting and ironing from the back. This item is vintage, authentic and one of a kind. It has signs of wear and tear.
