Welcome to the How-To Guide for First Year Art Teachers where I give you my 10 Steps for Success! Congratulations! You got your own classroom. OH MY GOSH, you have your own classroom. Your mind and stomach start racing, both with extreme excitement and panic because now, it all just got real. You will have a lot of students, a lot of planning, and a lot of classroom to keep organized. Figuring out where to even start is a huge stress and will require a tea (or a beer) and a nap (probably some Netflix too).
Your elementary students are going to be so excited to study history, culture, geography and literacy when they have the opportunity to view it through the lens of Art and Art History. These amazing Art History lessons provide a unique and interesting way to engage learners and integrate learning on multiple levels. Each Art History unit includes a student-friendly teacher script to read aloud to students. Questions are also included to support you in helping students to engage in discussions. These Art History lessons integrate literacy activities, allowing students the opportunity to share, compare, discuss and write about their learning. Writing prompts and reflective writing, word searches and coloring pages are also included in this resource. Commercial purposes such as Outschool are not permitted. For copyright reasons the art pieces are not included in this resource. Simply project digital versions so all students can view paintings properly. The artist and title of the artwork are clearly at the beginning of each lesson. Simply type it into a google search and click "images" to easily share it with the class by projecting it on the whiteboard. You do not need any particular websites to complete this unit. Common Questions Answered: Which materials are neeeded? These art projects purposely use only inexpensive and easily accessible art supplies. I have worked at low-budget schools and know how expensive supplies can be. Therefore I have designed the lessons to be completed with simple supplies such as paper, scissors, markers, paints, pastels and other common items. You can see a materials list in the preview if you are not sure. How much background knowledge needed? You do NOT need any art history background to begin - you may find yourself becoming an art history expert along with your students! How much time is needed? The time needed will depend on the age group of students, and whether or not you choose to complete all the projects, extension projects and related writing activities within each unit - there are a lot of different things to choose from! Each unit will take approximately one hour for the class discussion/teacher read-aloud script and art lesson / clean up. Another hour may be needed to do additional art lessons and writing extensions. Do lessons have to be completed in order? Although the lessons are organized chronologically through history, you do NOT have to complete all the projects - you can pick and choose. You can also pick and choose between the activities included and do not have to complete them all. You may wish to complete the art projects during art period, then use the extension writing projects, word searches and coloring pages in your writing center each week, or for early finishers! What are the Literacy and Geography Components? There are many literacy components to this program as well, so it will fit in well with your writing and social studies (an early sense of history, culture and geography). A simple world map is included so students can mark the areas that each lesson focuses on. What is the Read Aloud Script for Teachers? You do not need to have ANY background knowledge of art history to teach this unit! The teacher read-aloud script guides your conversation as each lesson begins, with questions included to ask your students. You can turn to page one and begin teaching! What About Early Finishers? I have included reflect/review writing pages to work on when finished the art projects, as well as various printables, word searches for each lesson AND coloring sheets for each art period or artist. These can also be used in literacy centers or as extension lessons. What Kind of Reference Materials Will I Need? All lessons also have are easily supported visually with a simple web search. For copyright reasons the art pieces are not included, but it's more beneficial to project digital versions so all students can view paintings properly. I have listed the artist and title of the artwork clearly at the beginning of each lesson. Simply type it into a google search and click "images" to easily share with the class by projecting on the white board. You do not need any particular websites to complete this unit. How Can I Manage Student Work? All projects can be kept in a scrapbook, which results in a great portfolio and keepsake! A scrapbook cover is included. I am sure you will also want to display the fantastic artwork on the wall as well, but later it can be glued into the scrapbook along with any extension projects for that time period. Teacher Tip: I've been doing these lesson with multi-age buddy classes for 12+ years, with great success. A "Dot Day" Art Lesson inspired by "The Dot". Of all the Art Picture books, "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds is my absolute favorite. Not only does it teach the creative process and how art evolves through creation, but it teaches the reader about Growth Mindset and perception. The teacher in the story teaches Vashti about not giving up and just starting with a mark to see where it takes her (and what a journey Vashti goes on!).

Our first project this year has been a very progressive, multi step, multi media project that has really evolved as we created! Our first project when we got back from hurricane Harvery was to release some stress with scribbling to music.... Students spread out on the floor and scribbled to the sound of fast and slow music by “The Piano Guys” they love these songs because they recognize them from the radio but it’s all instrumental. The students were instructed to use large arm motions that cross over the body. Any motion that crosses from the right side of the body to the left or vise versa uses both hemispheres of the brain since each side controls one side of the body. It is very relaxing and the kids LOVED it!!!!!! The next class kids painted over thier scribbles with water colors, tempera paint, and India ink. They explored the way different paint resists or does not resist the crayon. You can follow me on instagram for more photos "Natty241" And my facebook page "Mrs. Waggenspack's Art Room" They were allowed to use their hands at the end. We try to use all 5 senses for a while brain experience. We talked about abstract art, Kinetic art, And the experience of art. It is a process and not just a product that we create in art. After each experience we gathered on the floor and talked about how they felt in one word. Students said, “Free, alive, happy, exhilarating, dancing, creative, like a real artist, quiet, excited, open, angry, peaceful, etc” When the paintings were finished the students tore them up into strips! They were so upset at first. When they saw the next step they were so excited. The students glued the strips on a late paper for the collage. This took three 50 minute classes. Then students traced the eyes and nose of the animal they wanted and outlines the eyes, nose, and beaks with India ink. ( pictures at the bottom of blog) this is the resin I use. I paint it on with a brush. This resin must be mixed one to one ratio and it is toxic so you must wear a mask. Do NOT let the children use it. You have to do it for them if you want the ultra shiney eyes effect! Wear a mask and use gloves! You can sprinkle glitter in it too for extra FUN!!! Then they glued the eyes and nose on the collage. The next step was to embellish the face and add details. We used India ink and fan brushes to make fur and feathers. When the entire face was finished I added resin to the eyes to make them shine These are how the eyes and noses look before they cut them out. We used the fan brush for making fur. These are the travers they could use for eyes, noses and beaks
