Introduction: Hormones are chemical messengers in our body that help in normal physiology of our brain, heart, bones, muscles and reproductive organs. The body functions best when all theses different hormones are balanced, Any sort of hormonal imbalances leads to various disorders depending on the type of hormone that is either abnormally high or low. Female hormones have a major role in the life of a woman beginning as early as from puberty until menopause. At all the different stages of life, female hormones need to be balances or otherwise may lead to various problems including abnormal menstrual cycles, absence of periods, heavy periods, infertility, mood swings, premenstrual syndrome, hot flashes, disturbance in healthy sexual life etc. In short we can say female hormonal health is not only limited to menstrual cycles and menopause but instead it is something that determines her life long well being. Causes Of Hormonal Imbalances; In general hormones may be imbalanced due to: Stress Inadequate sleep Aging Taking synthetic hormones Long term use of birth control pills or injectable contraceptives containing hormones. Lack of physical exercise. Use of artificial and synthetic food products. Use of certain artificial cosmetic products. The Major Components Of Female Endocrine System: Ovaries; which are the female sex organs. Pituitary gland: which helps control all the endocrine organs in the body. Hypothlamus; regulates the secretion of hormones in the pituitary gland. Thyroid gland; mainly controls body metabolism but has a major role in female sexual functions as well. Adrenal glands. Female Hormones: include 1. Estrogen which is secreted by the ovaries during the first half of the menstrual cycle. 2. Progesterone which is secreted in the second half of the menstrual cycle from the ovaries. 3. FSH ( the follicle stimulation hormone) is secreted from the pituitary gland and stimulated the ovaries to produce follicles one of which gets large enough to release a mature egg in the mid cycle. 4. LH ( Leutenizing hormone) secreted from the pituitary gland and helps release a mature egg and promotes ovulation. 5. Prolactin promotes lactation during breast feeding. 6. Oxytocin leads to uterine contractions during labor and child birth. What Happens During A Normal Menstrual Cycle: There are four hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle in females. These are FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone. A normal menstrual cycle is about 28 days long with the day 1 as the first day of bleeding. 1. Follicular phase: begins on the day 1 of the periods. During this phase FSH and LH is released from the pituitary gland . FSH helps the growth of 10 to 20 eggs within the follicles in the ovaries. These hormones also stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen. As the estrogen level increases it turns off the production of FSH. At the end of this phase one of the follicle gets big enough to get ready to release a mature egg. the other smaller follicles disappear. At any point in this phase if there are hormonal imbalance the follicles may turn into fluid filled cysts. This may cause poly cystic ovarian disease. or just an isolated cyst that may sometimes grow very large. 2. Ovulatory Phase: It usually starts at day 14 of the cycle and at this point there is a surge of LH from the brain causing the egg to be released. This egg is then carried in the fallopian tubes and is ready to be fertilized. During this phase woman is fertile. If there is no LH surge the egg fails to be released leading to absence of ovulation and problems with conceiving. 3. Luteal Phase: Once the egg is released the empty follicle in the ovary becomes a corpus luteum and it secretes the hormone progesterone. This hormone prepares the uterus to develop the lining to implant a fertilized ovum. If the fertilization has taken place the ovum the zygote is implanted in the uterus. If there is lack of progesterone , the zygote my fail to implant and this can lead to very early miscarriage. If no fertilization occurs the lining of uterus is shed as menstrual bleeding. Any of these hormones if not balanced may cause menstrual irregularities and abnormal flow. The hormones change during different phases of the cycle and this have an affect on the mood of the woman. Just before the onset of the periods some woman may feel extremely irritable and frustrated that leads to premenstrual syndrome. . When getting closer to menopause again the female hormones are imbalanced that lead to symptoms of hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings.

MASSAWA, Eritrea, July 1 (UNHCR) - Nothing has deterred Somali refugee Hali Shukri Ibrahim from her passion to get an education. Not an early forced marriage, nor war, nor separation from her parents, husband and baby son, nor exile. In fact, the 26-year-old says becoming a refugee gave her the prized opportunity to study, and stoked her ambitions. Goals that back home, in Mogadishu, capital of then war-torn Somalia, would have been limited to raising a large family, she says.

We all have great classroom management plans, but what happens when that plan doesn't work for a certain child? Most of us have a few go to strategies that we attempt before asking for help or referring the child for discipline procedures. I want to share with you some ideas on how to recognize what is going on, so that you don't get stuck in a cycle of doing the same thing with the same results.

Today's lesson is Abraham. We used a lot of stars for this lesson with the projects! You can print a 'Be a Star for Jesus' set of cards that are discussion starters. I used this title so these cards could be used with other Bible lessons. You can print them in color, black/white or in Spanish. Some time passed after Babel and people had children and they had children. Terah (Tee’rah) had Abram. Abram was married to Sarai, (Sar’eye) and they didn’t have any children. He was very rich in livestock, silver and gold He lived in Canaan. Today's scripture is Genesis 17:1-18:16; 21:1-5; 22:1-13. When Abram was 75 years old, God appeared to him. (Genesis 12:1-7) Even though Abram didn’t have sons, God told him to “Look toward the heaven and count the stars, if you can and that is how many descendants you will have.” (Genesis 15:5-6) Abram believed what God told him. He said that Abram would be “a father of many nations” and now his name would be Abraham. Nations and kings would come from his descendants. Also, now his wife will be called Sarah. Many years later, God talked to Abraham told him that He would bless Abraham and Sarah with a son, and she will be a mother of all nations. How do you think Abraham felt about this? He actually fell on his face and laughed! (Genesis 17:17) Abraham asked God “How can I have a son when I’m 100 years old and my wife is 90?” God told him that Sarah would have a son and they are to call him Isaac and she would have him next year. Later, Abraham was sitting by the door of his tent and when he looked outside, there were three men. He ran out to meet them and offered them water, rest, food and feet cleaning. He had Sarah make bread, and he took a good calf and had someone cook it. They asked Abraham where his wife was and he told them “She is here in the tent.” Sarah was listening by the tent door and heard one of the men say that she would have a son. Well, she knew she was old and she laughed to herself. Now the man asked Abraham why Sarah laughed because can’t God do anything? Sarah became afraid and denied that she had laughed, but He said “Yes you did.” The men rose and Abraham went with them to send them on their way. The next year, Sarah had their son and they named him Isaac just as God told them to. More time passed and God called to Abraham and told him “There’s a mountain that I want you to go to and take your son Isaac.” So, Abraham got up early, saddled his donkey, and took two men and Isaac. He went where God told him to and on the third day he saw the place that God wanted him to go. He told the young men to stay there because Isaac was going with him to worship. Abraham took the wood, fire and a knife for the offering. Isaac said “But, father, we have everything for the offering, but where is the lamb?” Abraham told him that God would provide it. Abraham built an altar and put the wood on it. He tied up Isaac and laid him on the altar and lifted his knife to kill him. But the Angel of God came and called out his name and told him not to hurt Isaac. Now I know that you fear God. Abraham looked up and there was a ram caught in a thicket. He took the ram and offered it up as a sacrifice instead of Isaac. Compare this to God being willing to send His Son to be offered as a sacrifice for us. He didn’t ask Abraham to do something that He wouldn’t do. This is another visual I used with the ram caught in the thicket. I made this lighted night sky for this lesson from a science board, purchased with the blue background. I spray painted the bottom with the Krylon Make It Stone! textured paint. I used the Travertine Tan color. I glued the scripture topper to the board. Then, I added the light bulbs (35 in a craft pack, but suggest the 50 set purchased during Christmas to be cheaper). I used yellow paint and a Q-Tip to add the stars, then I used different glitter glue to make dots to add the shine & sparkle! To finish it, I used a sand color felt for the ground, and I used my Moses (I don't have Abraham) to stand. I also used this visual for the sacrifice. The project is a set of how to 'Be a Star for Jesus'! I left the title generic so this could be used with other Bible lessons, but I wanted to use stars since that is one of the points of learning about Abraham. These are discussion starters for various times that we may or may not act like Jesus wants us to. So, each star has a time and a fill-in-the-blank. For instance, with my family, could be nice, share, control mouth, etc. They can be put in any order. Also, you can print them in color or black and white. Printed on black and white can be printed on color paper or cardstock. They can be connected with a book ring, or I used a star brad. I used a tiny hole punch to make the holes (you can purchase at craft stores), then added the brad. You can print the cards here: Color B/W Spanish: B/W click here to print. I included the completed pictures that are shown for an easy teacher's visual. This pack includes the original (right) Abraham and the (left) Abraham by Sweet. I added the worksheets with Abraham already on the paper, or separate so the student can cut and glue. I also added black & white options for each. I also add the final application worksheet that is on the far right. This is a discussion starter to let students think about the blessings that they have from God. Here is the cut & glue worksheet pack that can be used by itself, or with the lapbook printables. Click here to download.
