As promised in the previous post on kicking IB Language A Paper One's butt, Nerdvark has gone at a poem -- in this case "I Am Tourist" by Adrian Mitchell, as seen on last year's May exam -- and peeled its layers. Here is the poem (in fact, the actual page off the exam) after Nerdvark got through with it (Nard contributed by stamping a purple pig-head at the bottom): Nerdvark's colour-coded annotations of "I Am Tourist" by Adrian Mitchell, for IB English Paper 1 Are you trying to get level 7 in IB English? I can help you. Click here for more info. Nerdvark likes to colour-code his analysis. He reads the poem several times (on Paper One you can dedicate more time to reading/analyzing if you pick the poem, because poems are shorter) and he uses a few colours to underline and write his thoughts/impressions. For "I Am Tourist" Nerdvark picked green to analyze form, red to analyze literary tools, and blue to analyze words. He then wrote a few notes to himself under each question. Play Spot the Kitty on Android for free! Form - Look at whether the poem follows a standard form, which might be a clue to analysis, such as the use of a ballad to tell a story, or free form. Look at punctuation, which helps you understand meaning. Look at lines and stanzas - sometimes longer lines or shorter lines emphasize the idea in those lines. Sometimes different stanzas have different tones or different topics. Look also at rhyme and rhythm - a rhythmic poem might be mimicking a childen's rhyme, the sound of hoofbeats, music, or heartbeat - the rhythm might be faster for an exciting poem, or slower for a romantic poem. Also note who the narrator is, the POV, and whether the narrator is talking to someone. (Hint: the narrator is rarely the poet, and sometimes the narrator is talking to him/herself, or someone else other than the reader, such as his/her lover.) Literary tools - if the poem has a wide range of literary tools, you might want to colour code them, too - pink for imagery including metaphor, purple for sound tools such as onomatopeoia, etc. Words - all the words (connotation of words, meaning of words, symbolism, and sounds of words) add up to the poem's atmosphere, mood, tone, and hidden layers of meaning. You can say the poem has a "lexis" of ... as "I Am Tourist" has a lexis of self-centredness through repetition of the words "I" and "my". It has a simplistic lexis through words like "cold glass", "blue", "full" and "beautiful." Thank you, IB Organization, for providing a fun poem by The Dogfather, Adrian Mitchell. Find out everything about this poet on his website: www.adrianmitchell.co.uk, which is decorated with blue dogs of peace. Literature circles are so promising. Giving students choice really helps inspire them to read. At the same time, traditional literature circles are prone to draaaaag. Students aren't always prepared to dive in and lead their own discussion, even when assigned to the classic literature circles roles. It's no fun racing from group to group, trying to inspire good conversation with your teacherly presence. That's why this literature circles unit for older kids skips the roles and the awkward silences. Instead, you'll have six meeting days' worth of creative activities for your students to work on in their groups. They'll get choice over their books and creative ways to respond to them, and you'll get peace of mind during your literature circles unit. Finally. Zip file: Google Drive + PDF Versions included. What's inside: Clear suggestions for scheduling your unit over the course of about a month, including a book tasting, six meetings, a one-pagers gallery, lightning versions performance day, book trailer viewings and awards voting, and more. 6 Prep sheets to get students ready to succeed with each in-class activity, which will also serve as your chance to check that students did read 6 Unique Activities for your students to work on in class together: the open mind character analysis, book-inspired social media posts, the silent discussion (really!), one-pagers, lightning versions, and book trailers Easy rubric for grading the final project (book trailers to share with the class) Check out the preview video for a quick tour through the full curriculum. This is a general scope and sequence for a 2-year IB Spanish IV and V class, with ideas for interesting themes and sub-themes based on the core and optional themes for the IB exam. There are grammatical concept review suggestions as well as text-type suggestions to help students prepare for the IB exam and for teachers to begin planning units of study. It is not a unit planner for IB, but rather suggestions and ideas on how to begin planning units of study over 1-2 years for IB Spanish. I teach IB Spanish IV HL, IV SL, V HL and V SL, however they are all mixed within the same classes. Therefore I had to create a 2-year curriculum for my A-year and B-year so that the material doesn't repeat for students. I have created my two-year curriculum into 2 years of 10 units of study (20 total) which include what will be covered, the grammatical concepts to be covered as well as the text types to be highlighted in class. The unit are planned accordingly with the literature components. Year "A" covers "La ciudad de las bestias" and "La case de Bernarda Alba." Year "B" covers "Cuando era puertorriqueña" and "Lazarillo de Tormes." If you are interested, I also have all my lesson plans and materials uploaded as well onto my TPT site. You can buy individual units or the entire year or two-year curriculum! I have to admit - I was never a fan of poetry. In the words of my students, I just didn't "get it." That all changed my junior year of high school. I had what in most of my classmates' minds was the toughest teacher in the school. She certainly wasn't "warm and fuzzy," but she pushed us and challenged us. I fell in love with poetry in her class because she was able to open my mind to it. Sign of a great teacher. When I told my students that we will complete a unit on poetry this year, there were groans aplenty. That just wouldn't do for me - so I worked to create a poetry unit that they would be excited about. We started out reading a lot of funny poems (Shel Silverstein was a favorite), but we also read a lot of classic poems by Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, and Langston Hughes. The Langston Hughes poems worked SO well since we were studying the Harlem Renaissance in social studies. Cross-curriculum instruction at its best! I taught them the parts of a poem and rhyme schemes, and we had poetry readings - snaps and all! Lots of fun was had by all, but I just wanted them to go a little deeper. Since I only fell in love with poetry once I was able to fully understand it, I had to teach my students to do the same. Cue annotation. I think as teachers of elementary students, we are often a little apprehensive to introduce concepts like "annotation" because they are still young and you just never know how students will perceive a difficult concepts. They ALWAYS manage to surprise me! To teach annotation, I introduced the poem, The Wind Began to Rock the Grass by Emily Dickinson. The students read the poem to themselves, and then I read it out loud to them. Of course, when I asked them what they thought the poem was about - many were unsure. I told them that we are going to annotate the poem, gave them the definition, and then we dived right in. I read the poem stanza by stanza again, but this time we defined words, asked questions, and made comments on the left hand side. On the right side of each stanza, we wrote a one sentence summary. As we defined words, we talked through the words and used context clues. It's amazing how intuitive fifth graders are. They can always figure out the meaning of a word (even though they don't always believe in themselves). We worked through the first three stanzas together, and then I let them complete the last two on their own. As you may guess, they excitement began to build as the poem drew to a close. The light bulbs went off, the choirs began to sing, the end of the tunnel was in sight...you get the idea. Students were SO EXCITED about the fact that they now understood the poem so clearly! This certainly ended up being one of those "it worked!" lessons. Here is another example with the poem, A Bird Came Down by Emily Dickinson. The next day, I asked students to work in partners and gave them a new poem to annotate. I was very impressed with their work, and they were able to see the purpose of annotation and understand why it helps them become better readers and writers. I learned a good lesson too: start annotation at the beginning of the year! :) I use a PowerPoint Lesson and Interactive Notes to teach this entire unit. The lesson teaches students how to annotate slide by slide! Happy Teaching!

Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings, homographs look the same, and homonyms are everything that confuse the heck out of us and befuddle our brains in various linguistic ways. And there’s hardly anyone who knows them better than Bruce Worden, the founder of the ‘Homophones, Weakly’ project. It even has a homophone of ‘weekly’ in the name to gently poke fun at itself, too. It’s brilliant!
