July / August 2020 A celebration of cloth, culture and creativity "I, like many, was touched by Her Majesty The Queen's message to the nation, broadcast at the height of the pandemic. Her words, ‘This time we join with all nations across the globe in a common endeavour ...We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return ...we will meet again’ have inspired me to curate this special issue. For now, our lives have slowed and narrowed encouraging us all to re-prioritise the important things, our friends and family and the simple pleasures of hearth and home. To engage with textile crafts and appreciate the positive impact that making has on our mental health. But once the pandemic has passed, we must not let fear breed further isolation and loneliness. That will be the time to rebuild our economy and to reach out to our friends across the world. Here at Selvedge, we feel that it has become more important than ever to support the work of makers who are in danger of being amongst the hardest hit. The products of their labour so enrich all our lives, and particularly now, their creative expression is a tonic for us all. With these thoughts in mind, the focus of this issue is the work of the makers of handmade textiles: individuals whose livelihoods are threatened, and communities both near and far struggling for survival because of their isolation and the pandemic’s economic impact. It is with sadness that we are not be able to be with you in person, the 2020 edition of the Selvedge World Fair will be brought to you online, but at the same time we also look forward to 2-4 September 2021 when we will meet again. In the meantime we bring you uplifting stories of women building better lives for their families through textiles endeavours in Guatemala and India. These artisan- led projects work best when they maintain the essence of the makers visual identity yet produce a product that connects to contemporary society. One of the best examples are the uber-cool chairs by Djilene Creations from Senegal. So, I recommend you grab a lawn chair, and enjoy this issue in the summer sunshine." Fuel your early morning client adventures in style, and with the confidence of knowing no one is okayer than you. Fill the 11oz or 15oz mug with coffee, tea, or whatever else you use to kickstart your day. (I'm not here to judge.) The logo is on both sides, so you can remind yourself just what an okay bookkeeper you are, no matter which hand you use to hold it. * The design appears on both sides of the mug. * The mug is dishwasher-safe. They come with a scratch-resistant finish, so I guess if some maniac runs their keys across your mug, it will resist this indignity. Also, I'm told the easy-grip handle makes for a smooth drinking experience. I don't know what a complex-grip handle looks like, but this doesn't have one of those. .: Material: durable white ceramic .: Available in two sizes: 11oz (0.33 l) an 15oz (0.44 l) .: C-shaped easy-grip handle .: Scratch-resistant finish
About The First Day of Spring “Tense, addictive and powered by an unforgettable narrative voice.” – PAULA HAWKINS “A stunning debut…Suspenseful? You bet. Heart-rending? From beginning to end.”— The Washington Post “Gripping…The voices of Chrissie and Julia reside deep in your skull: visceral and wicked, sad and wonderful, all at the same time.” — The New York Times “Fans of Lisa Jewell and smart psychological suspense will eagerly await Tucker’s next.” —Publishers Weekly, STARRED review “So that was all it took,” I thought. “That was all it took for me to feel like I had all the power in the world. One morning, one moment, one yellow-haired boy. It wasn’t so much after all.” Meet Chrissie… Chrissie is eight and she has a secret: she has just killed a boy. The feeling made her belly fizz like soda pop. Her playmates are tearful and their mothers are terrified, keeping them locked indoors. But Chrissie rules the roost — she’s the best at wall-walking, she knows how to get free candy, and now she has a feeling of power that she never gets at home, where food is scarce and attention scarcer. Twenty years later, adult Chrissie is living in hiding under a changed name. A single mother, all she wants is for her daughter to have the childhood she herself was denied. That’s why the threatening phone calls are so terrifying. People are looking for them, the past is catching up, and Chrissie fears losing the only thing in this world she cares about, her child. Nancy Tucker leaves the reader breathless as she inhabits her protagonist with a shocking authenticity that moves the reader from sympathy to humor to horror to heartbreak and back again.

From Pan's Labyrinth to Lost in Translation
This 56 minute documentary on Netflix is the best thing I have seen this year for either a Spanish or a Social Studies class. 4 college students spend 56 days in a remote Guatemalan village on a dollar a day budget while they explore the effects of living in extreme poverty and some clever innovative solutions people have come up with to survive. This film is excellent for any Spanish class where you have been studying immigration and the reasons people leave their home countries to risk their lives traveling to the US, or for a social studies class where you are looking at underdeveloped countries and what it means to live in extreme poverty. My students loved this film bc it was created by four college students and uses their observations and connections as the narrative between the interviews with people in the village. (Interviews are all in Spanish with subtitles, narrative in English. ) Suitable for any level middle or high school class and available to view on Netflix, this film was such a gem you will want to own a copy. Movie guide contains 29 questions in chronological order with opportunities to stop the film and think/pair/share and for students to react with their own opinions. Note: If your students enjoyed this film and you teach Social Studies, be sure to check out their newest release: Salam Neighbor, where they spend a month in a Syrian refugee camp. This download has been revised to include a Spanish version of the questions and an additional after viewing activity for students to investigate Micro loans and raise funds to sponsor someone like the people in the film. 4/9/2022 Movie Guide: Living on One Dollar by Barbara Davis is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.

We can't be good all the time, and no one knows it better than Anne Taintor. This generous collection of her most popular artwork includes more than 150 images in categories such as friendship (a real friend will help you hide the body), motherhood (WOW! I get to give birth AND change diapers!), money (screw the budget!), attitude (let a smirk be your umbrella), and more. Also featuring an introduction by Taintor, this hilarious volume perfectly captures the deliciously sarcastic, snarky, and honest things that most women have found themselves thinking at one time or another. If you're looking for trouble, look no further....
Students of all ages love to look at living microorganisms under the microscope. This "living lab" of protists, algae and protozoans (Protista Kingdom) provides an extensive look at many different species. This lab was written with a high school biology class in mind, but it is easily adaptable to younger grades. What will the students be doing? Students view living Spirogyra, Volvox, Diatoms, Ameba, Euglena, Paramecium, Stentor, Dinoflagellates, and more! Synopsis Expand/Collapse Synopsis “Killing yourself at any age is a seriously tricky business. But when I was seven, the odds felt insurmountable.” As a young girl, Terri Cheney’s life looked perfect. Her family lived in a lovely house in a tranquil Los Angeles suburb where the geraniums never once failed to bloom. She was pretty and smart, an academic superstar and popular cheerleader whose father doted on her. But starting with her first suicide attempt at age seven, it was clear that her inner world was anything but perfect. “There’s something wrong with her,” her mother would whisper, her voice quivering on the edge of despair. And indeed there was, although no one had a name for it yet. Hostage to her roller-coaster moods, Terri veered from easy A-pluses to total paralysis, from bouts of obsessive hypersexuality to episodes of alcoholic abandon that nearly cost her her life. Throughout Terri’s chaotic early years, nothing was certain from day to day except this: whatever was so deeply wrong with her must be kept a secret. Thirty years later, Terri wrote Manic, a harrowing memoir that revealed her adult struggle with bipolar disorder. It became an instant New York Times bestseller and received passionate critical acclaim. But it didn’t tell the whole story. The mystery of Terri’s childhood remained untouched— too troubling, too painful to fathom. The Dark Side of Innocence explores those tumultuous formative years, finally shattering Terri’s well-guarded secret. With vivid intensity, it blends a pitch-perfect childlike voice with keen adult observation. The Dark Side of Innocence provides a heart-rending, groundbreaking insider’s look into the fascinating and frightening world of childhood bipolar disorder, an illness that affects a staggering one million children. This poignant and compelling story of Terri’s journey from disaster and despair to hope and survival will serve as an informative and eye-opening tale for those who would trust a flawless facade.
