Many visitors only pass through Scotland’s east coast en route to points north. Their loss. Here’s how to get the most out of this glorious region.
No one, except the workshop group and Tony Spencer who were with me last Friday morning are going to believe this image hasn't been saturated to hell. I have never witnessed a sunrise like this one. The colour and luminosity of the colour was staggering. The RAW files (which I shoot with the Canon Picture Style set to Neutral so the camera does no saturation) looked way over saturated before I even start working on them. In this image all I have done is clone the dust spots, adjust the contrast curve very slightly, crop it - add a bit of clarity and sharpening. I tried reducing the luminosity of the colours but it didn't work. I tried desaturating the colours but again, it just didn't look right so I decided to face the storm of derision from the unbelievers and post it anyway. After all, this is what it looked like - no kidding. Personally, I am not a huge fan of bright red/yellow/orange dawns - I prefer more muted soft colours, especially blues and pinks - but this was a jaw dropping sight and so I went with it. The workshop group were rather pleased with it (I still have a firm belief that Antony Spencer has his own personal weather system which follows him around - or is on call). The group on the workshop were great fun to be with (Hi guys & girls!) and we had a wonderful weekend (including two very nice curries). Those who had never been to Northumberland before became instant converts to this wonderful stretch of coast. We had great light all weekend, especially at Dunstanburgh Castle and later at St. Mary's Lighthouse, so you will be seeing more images from those locations I am sure. If you fancy joining me on a workshop, why not visit my website (a link to it is on my profile page) and you will find a full schedule with prices and details. It would be great to have you along next time. See My Profile Page for links to my website, photography portfolio and workshops. You can also sign up to my newsletter.
