This simple free spring printable is a lovely little (word-free) addition to your decor this season. It is reminiscent of my parents' garden gate at the last home they had...it was covered in wisteria and looked so lovely from the street. Grab this free spring printable below. I do have to laugh when I picture my parents' wisteria-covered gate at their home in Marble Falls, Texas. It was truly breath-taking, but (apparently) at a cost. When I would prattle on about its prettiness, I would get a stern warning from my mother: "Don't ever plant Wisteria. Not only will it take over your garden, it will take over your life." My mom always donned her sharpest shears to deal with the wisteria every spring...kicking herself for having planted it all those years before. While that is now a funny and quite sweet memory for me, this little free spring printable is a nod to the wisteria fiasco (because, what else could you call it?). Download yours below. Free Spring Printable As many of you know via my newsletter, today's printable was also born out of frustration for trying to figure out how to get an exclusive print out to my subscribers. This one is not exclusive at this point, but its original intention was just that. Because of that, it's fairly plain Jane in terms of options: just one size and one design. But, there are two format options. Oh, Wisteria, you naughty plant. Your beauty is captivating, but you sure are a beast to manage. But, thankfully, we can just enjoy the Wisteria in printable form today...no sharp shears needed. Printing Your Spring Printable This printable is for personal use. However, if you own a small shop or business and would like to carry the physical version (no digital redistribution is allowed), you may purchase a commercial license here. Again, there is just one (classic!) 8x10" size featured today. The PDF formats are perfect for your at-home printing. Both of the PDF sizes can be printed onto letter-sized white cardstock for the best results. Regular paper can be a bit too thin for designs like this. Purchase a ream of white letter-sized cardstock here on Amazon. When printing at home, you can use the NORMAL or DRAFT settings on your printer. The DRAFT mode can create slight striations, which often mimics the authentic watercolor look. This doesn't work out with all printers, but it's definitely worth a try to see how you like the results. I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe, y'all. I'm the mom at Chick-fil-A hosing her kids down with Purell when they come out of the play area. Once when my kids were very little, I had a one come out of a play area with a half-licked lollipop in his mouth...and he didn't go in with one. Pretty sure that incident scarred me for life. But, as a germ-fearin' mom, I was curious about all of the DIY posts I was seeing with people making their own soap. Especially the Mrs. Meyer's ones. Because I love me some Mrs. Meyer's Basil Soap (but, being a tight wad, I kind of get annoyed at the price). I really worried about introducing water to bar soap to bring it back to its liquid consistency. Because introducing water can also introduce lots of germies. And that sent my germie-radar on full alert. So after lots of research, I concocted a recipe that works well for me and my family. I did not add any type of preservative, so using the soap within a month is the key to avoiding germs. I split the final bottle with my mom so we can make sure it is gone by the end of March (and start the fun over again). Using purified water is another factor...soap making really needs to use purified water...don't turn on the tap for this one. Using tap water for soap making is like taking the bus to germ city. ;) You'll need half a bar of Mrs. Meyer's soap (her bar soap is not readily available in my area, I purchase mine from soap.com...if you spend at least $25 on their site or their sister sites, they give you free shipping), 1 tablespoon of Glycerin (this is at any grocery store in the first aid area...trust me, if my grocery store has it, so does yours), 1/2 gallon purified water and a cheese grater (I bought a cheapie for this project, I wasn't going to use my micro ones from Pampered Chef for this). Put your water into a clean pot (I used my oldest one that I never use anymore...although this is just soap we're making...probably okay to still use it for cooking). After you grate the half bar of soap, add it to the water. Be sure to save the unused half for next month's batch. Add one tablespoon of glycerin. Heat over medium-high heat while stirring constantly to prevent clumping. It will take about 10-15 minutes for all of your soap to dissolve. Congrats! You've now turned bar soap back into it's liquid form. Once all soap is dissolved and you basically have a batch of soapy water on your hands, remove your pot from the heat and let it sit undisturbed for several hours. Between 4-6 hours later, you'll get a thick version of what you had before. So thick, mine didn't even jiggle. Just grab your hand mixer and whip it right up. This lotion-y consistency is about what you're looking for. Transfer to your bottles. I leave a bit of space at the top so I can shake it every once in awhile if it gets too thick. I also (on my big bottle only) use a dry erase marker to record the date the soap was made. DON'T USE IT LONGER THAN A MONTH...it can start to grow bacteria at that point. The reason I didn't use a preservative (common ones are grapefruit seed extract, rosemary extract, vitamin E oil, Germaben II, Optiphen Plus) is because the cost would come close to the cost of just going and buying a bottle of Mrs. Meyer's liquid soap straight off the self (about $4 a bottle in my area). That just defeats the point to me. A lot of the preservatives are close to $20 for a 6-8 ounce bottle. You won't use the whole bottle, but still....just sayin'. ;) As far as storage choices, I would use something sturdier than one of the plastic gallon containers. This is a well-washed and disinfected 2 quart juice bottle that I used. Also, thoroughly clean your soap dispenser when you switch out your soap each time. To compare costs, a bottle of Mrs. Meyer's (in my area) is $4. The supplies used for this project include the Glycerin (4 ounces for $2 about $.40 per tablespoon), the purified water ($1 for a gallon, $.50 worth used for this project), and the bar of soap was $5 (and only $2.50 was used for this project and the rest will go to the next batch I make). So, $3.40 for 1/2 gallon of the soap...compared to the $4 for the 12.5 ounce bottle from the store. Not too bad for about 20 minutes worth of work. I do have to add a side note regarding my husband's reaction to this project. When I told him I would be making soap, he was like "really? making your own soap?" with a joking eye roll and slight chuckle. That being said, he hasn't really noticed the difference in the soaps since I added the homemade version to his dispenser on his sink in our bathroom. Even the fact that it's white and not clear hasn't thrown him off. But, he did mention his hands feeling softer not realizing the connection (glycerin!)...heehee! You guys know I love a good chalkboard free printable. Here are my go-to fonts for creating them, links to download included: {and two free chalkboard backgrounds} I've been kind of amazed at the amount of emails and messages you sweet peeps have sent me about the chalk fonts I use. The truth of it is, I spend way too much time on font sites...looking for fun ones. I thought I'd share my absolute favorite free ones with you here. I've included the well known 'quick brown fox' line so you can see how every character looks in the font {upper and lower cases, when available}. Below the images are links for you to go and download them for your own font library. And of course, what would chalk fonts be without chalkboard to use them on? Want to guess where we are headed for our Spring Break? Yippee...we are heading to California! We're planning to see family and of course, spend some serious time with our favorite mouse! I loved getting character autographs as a kiddo when I visited Disneyland. I know my boys will, too...they both have their faves that they hope to meet in person. I wanted to create a personalized autograph book for them to carry around with them. I found these index card books at Walmart for $3.47 each (awesome since park autograph books are anywhere from $10-$20). They were perfect. The cards inside are nice & thick so the Sharpies won't bleed through (characters love using a good Sharpie...I think it's easier to grip with gloves on!). Plus, if I want to add photos of the kids with characters later, these are a good size for that. These were the other items I used for this project. I measured out my cover (it gave measurements on the cover, but with the spiral binding, it extended a bit longer). In Photoshop Elements, I created an image for the cover. I printed them (at Kinko's...they have great quality) on cardstock. I wanted cardstock so once they were Mod Podged the black from the cover wouldn't show through. I used a different Mod Podge method...and loved it!! No bubbles! I used my foam brush to spread on a thin layer of the Mod Podge. Then I blew on it and fanned it for a few minutes so it wasn't too wet. Just really sticky/tacky. Then I applied the image. I smoothed it out with my finger tips. Then...the most IMPORTANT step....WALK AWAY!! Let this dry completely before applying your top coat. It was hard to resist. I wanted to pick up my brush and coat it up...but I didn't! Once it's dry, it's safe to give it a top coat. I used my skinny brush to get between the spirals. I know this didn't have any of the actual image on it, but I wanted the entire cover to have a nice, even uniform look to it. I finished the rest of it with my foam brush. Then let it dry and gave it a second top coat. And there it is!! Bubble free and all! Ready to be filled with signatures from special friends. UPDATE! Here they are in action at Disneyland: My only other tip is that if you make this particular style of book, take a freezer-type ziploc bag in your backpack in the park, too. Would have been nice to protect the book on the wet rides...but it was okay...just got a bit sticky! And the big clickable (non-cap) Sharpies worked fabulously!
