Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) 1892-1990 | Russian-French Le cinéma cochon Signed “Erté” (lower right) Inscribed "No. 15.928 / Le cinéma cochon / composition originale" (en verso) Gouache on paper Many of Erté’s costumes incorporate the otherworldly feeling championed by Surrealists of the day, whose studios resided in the very neighborhoods where Paris’ most iconic cabarets held nightly performances. Le cinéma cochon engages with concepts of the surreal while remaining distinct and unique in its execution. The figure dons a vivid red hat adorned with stylized eyes, and her dress appears to be composed of film strips depicting a pig. This dreamlike gouache also was once held in the personal collection of Hélène Martini, the famed dancer and owner of the Folies Bergère. The nightlife of the Art Deco period was a bold expression of the times, synthesizing time-honored entertainment traditions with a new modernist spirit in a dazzling dance of light, sound and movement. Paris’ cabarets, particularly in the Montmartre and Montparnasse districts, hosted spirited performances, with establishments like the Folies Bergère and the Bal Tabarin setting global standards for entertainment. The city’s vibrant cultural scene also provided an ideal backdrop for the popularization of jazz music, which quickly became the soundtrack of the era. Erté worked with many of the city’s premier entertainment venues, and his striking visuals—full of bold patterns, vibrant colors and otherworldly designs—came to define the modernity of the city. Russian-French visionary Romain de Tirtoff (1892-1990), popularly known as Erté, began his artistic journey in the culturally rich city of St. Petersburg, where he developed an early fondness for ballet and theatrical performances. He moved to Paris in 1912 to study architecture, and quickly found his creative niche in crafting fantastical costumes for the city’s bustling nightlife. Erté‘s expertise, refined under the guidance of the famed Paul Poiret, captured the attention of Harper’s Bazaar, marking the beginning of a significant partnership that spanned from 1915 to 1936. The artist also designed sets for notable cinematic masterpieces including Ben Hur and La Bohème, and created sets and costumes for cabarets, operas and other performances at the Folies-Bergères, Bal Tabarin, the Théâtre du Bataclan and Le Casino de Paris. Often remembered as the “Father of Art Deco,” Erté was a trailblazer whose colorful creations shaped the groundbreaking Art Deco era more than any other, leaving an indelible mark on the history of art and design. His artworks reside in prestigious museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Georges Seurat Even though Georges Seurat lived a short life (only 32 years), his contributions to art made him an icon of the 19th century. New scientific theories about color, optical effects and perception became the basis for his Pointillist technique. I loved watching the kid's react to Seurat's
A biography by Nicole Rudick told in Saint Phalle's own words, assembled from rare and unseen materials Known best for her exuberant, often large-scale sculptural works that celebrate the abundance and complexity of female desire, imagination and creativity, Niki de Saint Phalle viewed making art as a ritual, a performance-a process connecting life to art. This unconventional, illuminated biography, told in the first person in Saint Phalle's voice and her own hand, dilates large and small moments in Saint Phalle's life which she sometimes reveals with great candor, at other times carefully unwinding her secrets. Nicole Rudick, in a kind of collaboration with the artist, has assembled a gorgeous and detailed mosaic of Saint Phalle's visual and textual works from a trove of paintings, drawings, sketches and writings, many previously unpublished or long unavailable, that trace her mistakes and successes, her passions and her radical sense of joy. Saint Phalle's invocation-her "bringing to life"-writes Rudick, "is an apt summation of the overlap of Saint Phalle's life and art: both a bringing into existence and a bringing to bear. These are visions from the frontiers of consciousness." Born in France, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was raised in New York and began making art at age 23, pursuing a revelatory vision informed both by the monumental works of Antonin Gaudi and the Facteur Cheval, and by aspects of her own life. In addition to her Tirs ("shooting paintings") and Nanas and her celebrated large-scale projects-including the Stravinsky Fountain at the Centre Pompidou, Golem in Jerusalem and the Tarot Garden in Tuscany-Saint Phalle produced writing and works on paper that delve into her own biography: childhood and her break with her family, marriage to Harry Mathews, motherhood, a long collaborative relationship with Jean Tinguely, numerous health crises and her late, productive years in Southern California. Saint Phalle has most recently been the subject of retrospectives at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, in 2015, and at MoMA P.S.1, in 2021. Nicole Rudick is a critic and an editor. Her writing on art, literature and comics has been published in the New York Review of Books, the New York Times, the New Yorker, Artforum and elsewhere. She was managing editor of the Paris Review for nearly a decade. She is the editor, most recently, of a new edition of Gary Panter's legendary comic Jimbo: Adventures in Paradise (New York Review Comics, 2021). 200 Illustrations, unspecified
The Litany of Loreto dates back to the Middle Ages and includes over 50 titles of Mary. In 1912, Italian artist Ezio Anichini released his illustrations of the 46 titles that were in use at the time. Of those, an anonymous person made 12 or 13 into needlework. Anichini’s style is Art Noveau, or Stile Liberty in Italian. The sticher faithfully recreated Anichini’s precise yet romantic, emotionally engaging images. Anichini is perhaps our favorite non-museum Catholic artist, and the embroidery adds an intriguing element of color to his designs, besides being masterpieces in their own right. St. John Henry Newman said of the title Mirror of Justice that “justice” in this usage can be taken as “all virtues at once, a perfect, virtuous state of soul—righteousness, or moral perfection; so that it answers very nearly to what is meant by sanctity.” Mary reflects like a mirror the holiness of Jesus, who himself is justice. (Sources: CorneliaConnellyLibrary.org & needlenthread.com & www.cardinaljohnhenrynewman.com) We spent a lot of time restoring this image, removing the flaws from the photograph and lightening it a bit to bring out the richness and contrast of the colors and the precision of the needlework. We look forward to the time when the Royal School of Needlework, who hold and preserve these masterpieces, release perfect photographs of them to a grateful world. Until that time, the restoration work we have performed, not the imperfect source photograph, is copyrighted under U.S. copyright law. ** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! There is a white border of about 0.5" inch for 5x7", 1.3" for 8.5x11", or 1.6" for 11x14" pictures. All Approx! Fine art printers do this because the images are almost never the same rectangular ratio of the standard paper sizes. It also gives the prints a finished look, and lets them look good in a frame without a matt. – Acid-free paper – Archival pigments, rated to last for generations. – Cardboard backer – Above story of the art – Enclosed in a tight-fitting, crystal clear bag. Giclee (jee-clay) is an advanced printmaking process for creating high quality fine art reproductions. The result is wide acceptance of Giclee by galleries, museums, and private collectors. She has successfully moved between the unique properties of oil and cold wax, acrylic paint, and encaustic hot wax to skillfully create a cohesive body of artwork for her upcoming solo exhibition. She explains, “I usually have a color tone in mind, one that conveys the mood of the original idea. However once I start to paint, I don’t force the issue. I begin with automatic drawing in charcoal and oil pastel followed by spontaneous layers of color, remaining in this “non-thinking” state as long as possible. I allow the painting to have a life of its own, each line, brushstroke and layer informing the next. I hope to achieve a bit of mystery in my work, inviting the viewer to bring his personal experience to the painting. ‘ Martha Rea Baker’s inspirational journey is derived from her travels as well as her personal observations on the natural passage of time and is reflected in her ongoing series with titles such as Dordogne, Chronos, Baranca, and Cliffhanger. She continued her art studies at the University of Dallas and Collin College in Texas as well as European studies. Since 2006 Baker has resided in Santa Fe where she has become a well-established abstract artist.

Positive Organ Germany, 1627 This and all related images from: The Victoria & Albert Museum The term “Positive Organ” refers to an organ smaller than those typically used for church music. These were mostly employed in domestic settings, set on a table. One person would operate the keys while another pumped the bellows at the back of the instrument. This one with its carved, painted and gilt pine case features keys made of birch. The organ pipes are constructed of stiffened, layered paper. It’s believed that this instrument once belonged to Johann Georg, I Duke of Saxony (1585-1656), whose portrait adorns the piece. Strapwork strolls complete the elegant look. The organ was made in Dresden Germany in 1627 by Gottfried Fritzsche (1578-1638).
