I've seen people making butter around the internet for a while now and always in the back of my mind thought that it probably takes forever and doesn't really turn out that great. But when our homeschool co-op recently read a book that was a perfect tie-in for the activity (When I was Young in the Mountains), I figured it was time to give it a try. Materials: Heavy cream (the higher the fat content the better) Jar or tupperware container for shaking (smaller containers= less time shaking) I used a salad dressing shaker because it was easy for little hands to hold while they shook Marbles (optional, to aid the mixing process) Directions Fill the jar half-way up with the heavy cream, drop in the marbles and shake, shake, shake. You don't have to be super vigorous; just keep it moving. The cream will first turn to a thick whipped cream; shake for a little while longer after that- and suddenly you will see the butter curds separated out from the rest of the liquid. (It will be obvious) Shake until it doesn't seem to be changing anymore. Drain the buttermilk off of the butter and reserve for pancakes or something else delicious. You'll be left with a soft, spreadable butter- slightly wetter than what you would buy in the store. The Verdict So...it DID take a long time. The five kids shaking it had worn themselves out before it was done; so the adults finished it up. Altogether, it took about 20 minutes of shaking for the butter to form. But, the results were super satisfying. The kids were fascinated by the dramatic change from cream to butter, and it was tasty on the skillet cornbread that we made to go along with the lesson. If you're on the line about doing this activity yourself, my advice is that it is worth it, but be ready for a good arm workout! Works for Me Wednesday!

¡Existe una Opera sobre el genial compositor Wolfgangn Amadeus Mozart y es al ritmo del Rock and Roll! La descubrí hace unas semanas y, como comenté en mi Livejournal, desde entonces estoy obsesionada. Además Mozart está ambientada en la época en que está ambientada mi novela Engendrando el Amanecer y el vestuario ha sido verdadero objeto de estudio para mí. Mozart es un montaje teatral que combina la música original de Wolfgangn Amadeus Mozart con canciones de rock. Una mezcla curiosa y atractiva que logra emocionar mientras permite captar lo que las composiciones de este celebre músico significaron en su época y lo sublime que sigue siendo su creación. Con las coreografías pasa igual que con la música, combinan el ballet clásico con bailes más modernos, dinámicos y divertidos. Mozart parece un saltimbanqui en casi toda la obra. El musical se estreno el 22 de Septiembre del 2009 en el Palais des Sports de París, y se mantuvo por varias temporadas en 2010 y 2011. Se han hecho versiones en otros países como Corea y Japón. En el 2011 se exhibió en cine como película 3D, que por supuesto no llegó a mi país. En la obra se nos muestra al principio a un Mozart de 17 años tratando de ser libre para crear su música en el lugar que más le convenga, en el idioma que él quiera y con los temas que él mismo elija, escandalizando así a las cortes europeas tan quisquillosas y rancias como lo fueron en el siglo XVIII. Mozart tiene que enfrentar el hecho de que un compositor sin un patrón no es más que un vagabundo que se arriesga a morir de hambre ya que no tiene medios para dar a conocer sus composiciones. No importa cuánto talento tenga o cuánto esfuerzo y dedicación ponga en su obra, está atrapado bajo el capricho de reyes, emperadores y príncipes que quieran contratarlo y que controlan todo lo que se exhibe en los teatros. Pero Mozart posee un corazón y una creatividad indomables y no logra entrar en el molde que le quieren imponer. Además parece ser ingenuo, irreverente, obsesionado por crear, rápido para enamorarse, un poco libertino y ajeno a las maneras hipócritas de las Cortes. Todo esto representa buenos ingredientes para su drama. Sólo le faltan los estafadores y los enemigos. Mozart no es estafado exactamente pero sí es envuelto por la familia Weber que quiere aprovecharse de su talento. Luego surgen los enemigos: soberanos opresores que no quieren dejarle libertad creativa, críticos de su obra y... rivales. *Los malos pensamientos que estos dos me provocan cada vez que los veo juntos* Uno de esos rivales es Salieri. Este reconoce la grandeza del talento de Mozart y la magnificencia de su música pero a la vez le odia por ser capaz de crear lo que él no puede. Salieri es muy hábil en las cortes y logra hacer alianzas contra el bueno de Mozart, que no se toma en serio la amenaza que representan sus opositores. Y falta el condimento: la mujer fatal. Eloysa Weber quien le rompe el corazón a Mozart. Y la amante incondicional: Constance Weber quien, luego de ser opacada por su hermana, logra conquistar el corazón de Mozart y le acompaña hasta el final. También tenemos elementos fantásticos en el musical: la muerte misma visita a Mozart y le encarga un Réquiem. En toda la obra vemos la evolución del joven Mozart a quien la vida le va dando oportunidades, fracasos, victorias y decepciones hasta que su única esperanza es que su música perdure más allá de su muerte. El vestuario Me parece extravagante y colorido. Hay variedad y cada escena parece tener su propio estilo. Se destaca el hecho de que los tres personajes principales femeninos, Aloysa, Constance y Nannerl, utilizan trajes anacrónicos, con un estilo acampanado que produce un bonito efecto a la hora de moverse, parecen flotar o que son muñecas. Algunos trajes parecen demasiado simples, casi parecen no estar acabados contrastando con los de otros personajes, incluso secundarios, que usan los trajes de la época muy bien elaborados.Y los bailarines nos dan alguna sorpresa con sus atuendos. ¡Viva YouTube! En el canal de AlbertoLo Musical podemos encontrar el musical completo subtitulado. El problema es que en algunos países está restringido...
